Come see us!

HOLLYWOOD -- Warner Brothers has finally found its Peter Pan. After an exhausting search, unknown child actor Levi Miller has won the role. Last Au-gust he was seen in “The Spectacular Now,” with “Indulgence” star Shailene Woodley, Kyle Chandler and Jennifer Jason Leigh, which cost $2.5 million to shoot and earned $7 mil-lion. He also appeared in “Orca Park” and in guest shots in the series “Nec-essary Roughness” and “Terra Nova.” “Broth-ers and Sisters” producer Greg Berlanti has shifted the release date to July 17, 2015, which means NBC’s live production, which as yet has no Peter Pan, will air first on Dec. 4.

Barkhad Abdi, Oscar nominated for “Captain Phillips,” confessed at award time he was broke and needed a job or he’d have to return to driving a limo in Detroit, has accepted producer/director Judd Apatow’s offer to star with Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton, SNL’s Bill Ha-der, Amy Schumer and wrestler John Cena in “Train Wreck.”

• • •Barbra Streisand’s long talked about

remake of “Gypsy” has some compe-tition. Adam Shankman is producing and directing “Madame Rose,” based on the life of Gypsy Rose Lee and June Havoc’s mother, Mama Rose, for HBO. Shankman directed “Hairspray,” so it’s a safe bet that “Madame Rose” will be a musical.

Disney’s “Frozen” grossed $1 billion

at the box office even before its DVD release. Now Disney is planning a live Broadway musical production of “Fro-zen.” Kristen Bell, who voiced the lead in the film, already has offered to star in if Disney wants her.

• • •Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Bill

Nighy are reteaming for “The Best Ex-otic Marigold Hotel 2.” The original

was made for $10 mil-lion and grossed $137 million in 2012.

And get ready for a reboot of the 1984 hit “Ghostbusters.” “Ghost-busters 3” will have a new cast, though Bill Murray and Dan Ayk-royd have been asked to appear. Sadly, Har-old Ramis, one of the co-writers and co-stars,

who played Egon Spengler, passed away in February.

***The Disney Channel will air “Girl

Meets World,” the spin-off series from “Boy Meets World,” with Ben Savage returning as the father, while William Daniels will reprise his role as Savage’s teacher, Mr. Feeny.

Drew Carey and Craig Ferguson taped their special April Fools’ Day shows in advance. Ferguson hosted “The Price is Right,” with his robot sidekick Geoff Peterson (who wears a “Price Is Right” nametag all the time) and Secretariat, while Drew Carey hosted “The Late, Late Show.” Ironically, both shows are taped in the same building at CBS Tele-vision City. Now CBS President Les Moonves wants them to switch jobs permanently ... April Fool!

• Here’s a quick kitchen timesaver for those mornings when you want to get a little fancy: Make hash browns in a waffle iron. Parboil shredded potatoes the night before. Store in the refrigerator in a plastic bag. Generously oil your waffle iron and scatter precooked potato shreds on. They cook twice as fast, and have all of the double-sided crispiness of panfried. -- JoAnn• Freeze leftover wine for use in cooking. Use ice-cube tray for uniform measuring.• Want to hard cook many eggs at once? Bake the eggs in the oven 325 F to 350 F for 30 minutes, then submerge them in ice water for 10 minutes. Peel and enjoy.

• “Tension rods can be used in cabinets to separate cookie sheets and have them stored upright. Use two shorter ones mounted vertically in the cabinet, and slide the sheets right in. You also can use a dish rack to store pot lids upright. This is something I do, and my cabinets are nice and organized.” -- R.L. in Indiana• Try prep cooking once a week for as many elements of that week’s meals as possible. Chop veggies, saute or even brown meats for casseroles or prep slow-cooker bags. It also saves time if you are able to cook two meals at once -- say, roast two chickens: one for tonight’s dinner and another for chicken enchiladas later in the week.• “I only buy my bread when it’s two-for-one. I freeze it in half loafs, so I always have fresh bread, even if my nest is empty now!” -- D.D. in Maryland

Slow Down And SaveBy Craig W. Armstrong

The snow and ice have melted, the roads are clear and spring is here. Winter driving can be dangerous and very frustrating. Going to the store or getting to work during the winter takes planning. You have to allow for road conditions, traffic and the stress of taking to the ice roads. Once spring arrives, most people just want to relax behind the wheel and enjoy the open road. But there is something else to consider that you might not have thought about during the winter months-gas.

Getting from place to place in the winter is enough to occupy your mind, but once the roads are clear, you want to drive farther and faster, and that means using more gas. Here are a few ways to save on gas as you spend more time in your vehicle.

Slow down and save. The faster you go, the fewer miles you will get to the gallon. Driving over 60 mph will decrease your gas mileage. It has been estimated that every 5 mph over 60 you drive, you are going to consume more fuel. Besides how fast you are driving, consider HOW you are driving. If you rapidly accelerate or brake, you are using more gas and will lower your

mileage by more than 30%.Keep the pressure under control.

Correct tire pressure is crucial to good gas mileage. Make sure that your tires are properly inflated. The correct PSI (pounds per square inch) can be found on the tire, on the sticker on the door or in your owner’s manual.

Change your oil regularly. The classic rule of thumb is to change your oil every three months or 3,000 miles. This rule is a source of great debate. The point at which oil breaks down has improved over the years and many experts feel today’s oil lasts longer. The best way to judge when your oil needs to be changed is by consulting the vehicle owner’s manual.

Pace yourself. If you do a lot of highway driving, use your cruise control. This will allow you to keep a constant rate of speed and improve your gas mileage.

Lighten your load. During the winter months, you may have put bags of salt or sand in your trunk for added weight and traction. Now is the time to get rid of them. A lighter vehicle is a more fuel-efficient vehicle. Drag on your vehicle decreases its efficiency by 2%. Get rid of any nonessential items in your car and save some money on gas.

Spring is the time to shake off the cold of winter and enjoy the warmer weather. Just remember it may be warmer outside, but gas prices are still the same.

Drafty Windows a

Costly NuisanceQ: Our front room windows have never been very

good at keeping out drafts on windy nights, and in the summer, it’s the hottest room in the house. Do we need to replace these windows? -- Charlene T., via email

A: Drafty, leaky windows have a number of causes for -- from warped or old frames to single-pane win-dows and more -- but completely replacing the win-dows and frames can be quite costly.

Your electric company may offer an energy audit kit -- or can even send a professional to perform an energy audit -- at low or no cost. A basic kit can deter-mine that hot or cool air is escaping the house, while

more detailed audits can determine where that air is escaping.

Another way is to simply bring in a window replace-ment contractor to inspect the front-room windows, determine what’s wrong and present an estimate for the cost of repair or replacement. This is the costliest option, so be certain the problem is severe enough to warrant window and/or frame replacement. Consider getting two or three estimates from different contrac-tors to compare prices.

In the long term, investing in new, higher-quality windows can save a lot in heating and air condition-ing costs, and help make the front room more com-fortable year-round.

In the short term, you’ll want to take some inex-pensive measures to prevent drafts and, in the sum-mer, cool air from escaping.

If you’ve performed an energy audit or have been able to figure out just where outside air is blowing through, you can lessen the problem. Air entering under the sash can be blocked by placing a length

of foam weatherstripping along the underside, where the sash meets the frame. Thinner weatherstripping can be installed vertically along the frame to prevent drafts from entering between the window and the frame.

Install double-paneled curtains on all the windows of the room. In the winter, these provide an extra buf-fer between drafts and you. In the summer, these sol-id curtains can be pulled shut when the sun is shining into the room, to help keep the room cool.

These short-term measures can save some energy, but to really make that room comfortable, take a se-rious look at replacing the windows, particularly if they’re old or the frame or sash are visibly warped.

HOME TIP: Take a tour of your home and make note of as many improvement or maintenance tasks that you can find. Then create a schedule to tackle a few of them at a time.

Exercise Can Cause Asthma Attack

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have a 13-year-old boy who’s having asthma attacks. At least, that’s what they sound like to me. It started early this year when the weather was still cold. He plays or practices baseball three times a week. When he’d run the bases, he’d start coughing and wheezing. Now that the weather is warmer, he still has attacks, but not so bad. Does this sound like asthma to you? I don’t know that he’s allergic to anything. -- W.O.

ANSWER: Asthma is an inflammation of the airways, the bronchi. They become very sensitive, and suddenly narrow and fill with mucus when provoked. Both the constriction and the mucus make it difficult to get air into and out of the lungs. Included in the definition of asthma is reversibility. The constriction and mucus buildup are not permanent, in most cases.

The signs of asthma are a feeling of chest tightness, shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing. In your son’s kind of asthma, exercise-induced asthma, the attack comes on five to 10 minutes after beginning an activity. Exercise-induced asthma is not so dependent on allergy triggers. It comes on because cold, dry air irritates the airways. The warmer, moister air is perhaps the reason why his attacks are not as pronounced as they were.

You need to have a doctor examine the boy to be sure if this is exercise-induced asthma. Even if he has no symptoms at the time of his doctor visit, the doctor can induce them in a number of ways. He or she also can put an end to them.

If exercise-induced asthma is proven, a multitude of medicines are available for control. Most can be taken as mouth sprays. Taking the medicine before physical activity can prevent asthma symptoms for two or three hours. That’s long enough to get him through a practice or a game.

The above is for exercise-induced asthma.

It’s not for other asthma varieties. The booklet on asthma explans this

common illness and its treatments in detail. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 602W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What’s the lowest

number of calories a woman can safely eat in a day to lose weight? I would like to lose 20 pounds. How long will that take? -- G.K.

ANSWER: An active woman needs around 1,800 calories a day. If she gets much less than that, she’ll have a hard time meeting her vitamin and mineral requirements.

If she deducts 500 calories from her daily diet, she should lose a pound in a week -- 20 pounds in 20 weeks.

If she actively exercises, she needs to lower her daily intake by only 300 calories to get the same results.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: You printed two

letters on headaches. I don’t see you mention the medicine that works for me -- Excedrin. It takes only half a pill to end my headaches. My grown son has tried it, but he didn’t get good results. Just wanted you to know how well it works for me. -- J.R.

ANSWER: Thanks. Excedrin is a combination of aspirin and acetaminophen (Tylenol). Many Excedrin products also contain caffeine, which is said to enhance pain-relief. I’m sure readers will appreciate your testimonial.

READERS: Dr. Donohue is retiring after writing “To Your Good Health” for three decades. Dr. Keith Roach will be taking over the popular King Features syndicated column.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Can I give my dog and cat the same herbal supplements and vitamins that I take? It seems that a lot of medicines prescribed by the vet are just pet-sized doses of human medication. -- Tanya G., via email

DEAR TANYA: Some pets can take similar vitamin supplements to humans, but as you noted, the dosages can vary greatly between humans and between dif-ferent sizes and species. Dogs and cats and other mammals are most likely to be pre-scribed medicines that humans also take. Lizards, fish and non-mammals are far less likely to take the same things.

It’s really, really important to talk to your

pets’ veterinarian about giving them vi-tamins or herbal supplements, in addi-tion to doing your own research on nat-ural pet health. Many vets recommend certain supplements for dogs and cats, usually added to their food or given in pill form. Some advocate homeopathic remedies. All vets will tell you what not to give your pets, and you should take heed.

Additionally, your pet’s food may already contain some vitamin supple-ments. Be aware of what they’re already eating before adding more of the same.

What kind of supplements are com-monly given to house pets? Some of the more popular ones include vitamin

C, which is purported to reduce inflammation; fish oil, which improves skin and hair; and glucosamine (along with chon-droitin), which many owners say has reduced the severity of arthritis in their older dogs.

Again, do your research and make sure the supplement or vitamin you want to give your dog or cat is safe for them. Make sure they’re getting the right dose for their weight, as well. With vitamins as with ev-erything else, there is too much of a good thing.

Can Pets Take Human Vitamins?Q: In 1955, I received a Pelikan fountain pen as a graduation gift. It is the 400 NN

A: I spoke to several pen collectors and they seem to agree that your Pelikan 400 NN is worth about $150.

• • •Q: When I was a young girl, I loved reading the Judy Bolton mystery series. I have

a first edition of “The Ghost Parade” by Margaret Sutton, with its original dust jacket. Does it have more value than sentimental? -- Jan, Ramona, Calif.

A: The first edition of this book was published in 1933 and is valued in the $50 to $75 range, depending, of course, on condition. Incidentally, the first 10 titles in the Bolton series, which were published from 1932 to 1937, had four black-and-white illustrations printed on glossy paper. They were the work of Pelagie Doane from originals no doubt done in full color. Doane also was responsible for your book’s cover art.

• • •Q: During the 1970s, I began collecting bobbing heads, mostly NFL team mem-

bers. I now have several dozen but have no idea of current values. -- Sam, Chester-field, Mo.

A: One of the better references is “Bobbing Head Dolls: 1960-2000” by Tim Hunter. This illustrated reference features more than 700 dolls from baseball, foot-ball, basketball, hockey, TV, advertising, political and cartoon characters. This guide should help you determine how much the dolls in your collection are worth. It is available at Amazon.com.

• • •Q: My mother’s china pattern was “Virginia Rose,” and I would like to find out

more about it. I’m thinking of adding to the pieces already in the set. Do you have any suggestions? -- Laura, Rio Rancho, N.M.

A: “Virginia Rose” was introduced by the Homer Laughlin china company in 1929 and continued to be produced well into the 1970s. It was mainly sold in depart-ment stores, two of the main sources being Sears and Woolworth’s. I suggest you monitor eBay to track down additional pieces of this pattern.
