A devoted volunteer - the Scout Hut wouldn’t be here without him and there is a memorial plaque dedicated to him at 1st/36th St Peters Scout Hut in Warmsworth. 2. David Attenborough: Broadcaster and natural historian. He loved being a Scout and once said ‘There was a big jamboree in Leicester…I was asked to lead Lord Robert Baden-Powell to the podium to address the camp. It was a great moment for me, I only wish I had a picture of it.’ 3. Warwick Davis: Actor, television presenter, writer, director, comedian, producer and Scout Ambassador since 2018! ‘I have really fond memories of being a Cub Scout,’ says Warwick. ‘I was particularly proud of being made a sixer… I’m really happy now to encourage others to join, learn skills and have the same positive experience. I am grateful for what Scouting did for me.’ 4. Richard Branson: Entrepreneur, investor, author and philanthropist. He founded the Virgin Group and said of his experiences, ‘Scouting was great fun. I learnt a lot and I don’t think I could have done without it.’ 5. David Walliams: Actor, comedian, writer and has been a judge on ‘Britain’s Got Talent’. After visiting a Jamboree with Bear Grylls, David said ‘I haven’t been at a Scout Jamboree since 1982, when it was the 75th anniversary of Scouting. I’d forgotten the joy of thousands of people camping in a field together. It’s great to see so many young people getting together and enjoying themselves.’ 6. David Bowie: Musician and actor. His first public musical performance took place when he was a Scout on the Isle of Wight in 1958. 7. Billy Connelly: Comedian, musician, presenter, actor and artist. He was a Wolf Cub with the 141st Glasgow Scout Group and revisited Auchengillan Scout Camp during his ‘World Tour of Scotland.’ 8. Keith Richards: Musician and co-founder of The Rolling Stones. He said of Scouting ‘All that boosted my confidence at a crucial moment - especially the fact that I was promoted [to patrol leader] so fast.’ 9. Paul McCartney: Musician and founding member of The Beatles. Prior to The Beatles, He and John Lennon (also a Scout!) formed a band called ‘The Quarrymen’: Paul failed to turn up for their first gig because he was out with his Scout group. 10. Steven Spielberg: Director and film producer. As an 11-year-old scout, he used his father’s 8mm movie camera to film a nine-minute Western called ‘The Last Gunfight.’ It earned him a merit badge for photography…there was no badge for filmmaking! 11. Helen Sharman: Chemist. Helen was the first British woman in space after answering a job ad in 1989 which said: ‘Astronaut wanted; no experience necessary.’ Her experience in Guides prepared her well. 12. Kelly Holmes: Athlete. Kelly is a holder of many British records for middle-distance running. The double-Olympic champion says attending Girl Guide meetings taught her to ’be the best you can be. 13. Emma Thompson: Actor. Emma has won awards for her screen and stage performances. She is also a proud humanitarian, environmentalist and feminist. The former Girl Guide believes that through the organisation ‘girls and young women can gain the confidence to be equal partners and to make informed, responsible choices about their lives.’ 14. JK Rowling: Writer. JK Rowling is the UK’s best- selling living author. She attended Brownies and Guides in Scotland and thinks Hermione Granger would make a good Guide: ‘I can easily imagine her in the Guides, given that she’s resourceful, highly motivated and eager to learn. She might be a little over-competitive when it came to badges, though.’ She says her proudest Guiding memory was achieving her First Aid badge. 15. Tanni Grey-Thompson: Athlete and politician. She said ‘My experience in the Brownies was very much a ‘can do’ attitude. No sitting around and moaning. Just get on with it.’ Her time in Guiding helped prepare her to win six London Marathons and become a 16-time Paralympic medallist in wheelchair racing. 16. Clare Balding: Broadcaster, award-winning presenter, journalist, author and LGBT icon. Clare has won many awards for her journalism and television presenting work. Her experiences as a Girl Guide when she was younger helped her develop the communication skills she uses so successfully today. 17. Shappi Khorsandi: Comedian. Shappi writes and performs material based on her experiences growing up as an Iranian refugee in the UK and says, ‘Guiding taught me compassion and kindness.’ 18. Tori James: Adventurer. Tori became the youngest British woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest, when she was just 25 years old. She is the President of Girlguiding Cymru and an Ambassador for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in Wales. 19. Anita Roddick: Businesswoman. Anita founded The Body Shop and spent her life campaigning on human rights and environmental issues. Her time in Guiding taught her compassion and fuelled her desire to change the world. 20. Michelle Obama: American lawyer, writer and first lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017. As a supporter of the Girl Scout movement in America, and a former Girl Scout herself, Michelle encourages others to join the adventure: ‘As a Girl Scout volunteer, you can show girls that anything is possible, and you can inspire them to dream bigger and go further than they ever even imagined.’
