Join us for a traditional 3 course Hairst Supper prepared by the Commercial Hotel here in Tarland. The hall will be open at 7pm and we will start serving food at 7:30pm. After the meal and a short break for the staff to clear the tables we will welcome singer Jenny Sturgeon and musician Jonny Hardie to celebrate the harvest with us. Jenny is a singer/songwriter from Aberdeenshire. Jonny, also from Aberdeenshire, is a fiddle player, guitarist and singer, best known as the front man and a founding member of The Old Blind Dogs. Together they combine rich traditional music from the North East with original compositions that draw on influences from family history and folklore. A chance to taste the land and listen to its tales.

Game Preparation Workshop with Scotland’s Natural Larder. Saturday 24th

MacRobert Hall kitchen 3.30pm - 6pm.

£5. Minimum age is 16.

Get hands on and watch the experts in this fascinating workshop on game preparation. There will be a demonstration of the butchering of a deer carcase, which will be an impressive performance, to take everyone through the basic jointing, boning and trimming process (and maybe a bit of sausage or burger preparation too). There will also be hands-on preparation of available small game, such as pigeon, rabbit, goose and/or duck, with the aim of giving people the knowledge and confidence to handle their own carcase ‘procured’ from an estate or trained hunter and to deal with it in the best way. Active participation will be encouraged and all safety precautions will be in place.

Scotland’s Natural Larder is an initiative by Scottish Natural Heritage that aims to reconnect people with local and natural produce that has been harvested or hunted; encouraging Best Practice and responsible use of natural food resources. Limited places so booking essential.

Entry to the garden is £3. Refreshments are available at the Garden.

Tarland Community Gardens opened in 2013 and is a Tarland Development Group project. It provides an inclusive and accessible community growing space for local residents. It has indoor (polytunnel) and outdoor raised beds for rent plus communal planting areas including a soft fruit cage, fruit trees, and a herb garden. The community bee group also manages a hive at the site. It is a place for members to grow produce, learn, share and have fun.

Free Entry to Talk, £3 Entry to the Garden.

Yvonne Davidson Bee keeper for 30 years and co-ordinator of Tarland Bee Group will talk about seasonal planting for bees. Yvonne will give an overview of the life of a bee then give information on how to encourage bees into your garden. Honey bees need pollen, nectar, propolis and water to survive and thrive, all things easily provided by any gardener. It’s a win, win for everybody, bees get what the need, and catering for them means the gardener, in return, gets nice even pollination giving lovely flowers and crops.

Meet at the Tarland Taco Stall where the Rhynie Woman will be creating Mexican inspired food from locally sourced produce and foraged flavours from the local countryside. Mexican style wraps, soups, pizzas, sweets and our own Aberdeenshire agua fresca will be available on the day. A taste of Tarland with a twist of lime.

Rhynie Woman are an artist Collective that aim to enhance communities by raising awareness of their landscape, history, and people through food and celebration.

Fermentation is the oldest form of preservation and is also a highly nutritious and tasty way of making food last longer. Come along and learn how to ferment the plants from your local environment, taste some of our creative foraged ferments, and learn a bit about the edible wild plants of Aberdeenshire.

Price: FreeHow can farms in the northeast of Scotland meet the environmental and social needs of the day, whilst sustaining a viable livelihood?

BBC Scotland’s ‘Out of Doors’ Mark Stephen will lead a panel of local experts representing a range of approaches to this pressing dilemma: organic, non-organic and high nature.

Wendy Seel is an organic vegetable farmer and owner of Vital Veg in Midmar. Working with the Scottish Organic Forum Wendy led the development of Scotland’s new Organic Action Plan and she is now making an assessment of Scotland’s organic supply chains.

Charlie Adams farms at Braeside in Cushnie and is the NFUS Committee Chairman for Livestock.

Dave Parish is a senior scientist for the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust, and is managing research at their high nature demonstration farm at the foot of Morven.

Dinner will be served in the festival Tasty Tarland Tent by Buchanan’s Bistro from Banchory - an eating place that is trying to change the world, one forkful at a time.

If you take a table, surround it with honest suppliers, tend it with careful cooks, fill it with convivial company and respect the network that links us all to the soil you have the essence of good food. That is the founding principle on which Buchanan’s is built. They bake bread fresh on the premises every day, ferment yoghurt, cure and smoke pheasants, fish, scallops, oil, and vegetables. They pickle and preserve seasonal surplus and brew beer right there in their kitchen!

Using only the best suppliers who are as local as possible they create menus that are ethical, balanced, sustainable and very very tasty.

This year’s musical element of the festival is led by the Dee and Don Ceilidh Collective - a new community music initiative aimed at celebrating the area’s wonderful local music. 6 weekends of workshops, sessions and ceilidhs featuring the homegrown talent of Paul Anderson, Shona Donaldson, Jenny Sturgeon and more. This weekend is the fourth in their calendar of ceilidh weekends. From 10am to 4.30pm there will be music workshops in the Tarland Primary School. Workshops last the whole day and take place in 3 parts with tea and lunch breaks in between. There are 6 different workshops: upper and lower intermediate fiddle, guitar, mixed instrument group work, singing and songwriting. Tutors include some of Scotland’s top traditional musicians such as Paul Anderson, Jonny Hardie and Fraser Fifield.

Visit to Wark Organic FarmSunday 25th

Farm visit from 10am – 1pm

Experience a guided walk around this organic farm, where you will be able to see and learn about native breeds of cattle and sheep, hear about the different crops grown to feed them and the work carried out to encourage wildlife in the area - including development of the wetland area. After the tour you will have an opportunity to buy produce from the farm.

Please wear suitable footwear and clothing. Booking recommended but tickets may also available from MacRobert Hall on Saturday.

Wark Farm is a 200 acre mixed farm in the foothills of the eastern edge of the Cairngorms. The farm is home to a pedigree breeding herd of Belted Galloway cattle and flocks of pure bred pedigree Hebridean sheep. They promote the highest standards of animal welfare and aim to be as ecologically sustainable as is currently possible.

Learn how to make your own bread. Bread is a wonderful food, however not all breads are the same. Since the 1960s more and more of us have been eating mass produced loaves, which can leave a legacy of bloating, lethargy and depleted energy. Hand made bread is different. If you love bread, and would like to eat it every day, then for less than the price of an electric breadmaker Doug Cookson from the Crannach Bakery can teach you how to make your own. He’ll show you how simple bread making can be, how it needn’t take up lots of your time, and how totally therapeutic it is. All ingredients provided. Limited places so booking essential.

How to make the perfect poo!Work in groups to recreate the journey of one meal through the digestive system! Explore each stage of the digestive system using hands on activities to discover each organ’s function. This workshop has plenty of ikky detail, sure to make you say “ooooo” and “yuk!”.

Free. Suitable for All Ages.

Join Andy Taylor from the James Hutton Institute for a fabulous foray for fungi in Drummy Woods. Come and discover and learn about fungi and find out things you never knew before! Bring a small pocket knife and a basket if you want to collect some to take home. Outdoor clothing and study shoes required.

Be part of a traditional Scottish stories performance event with live original music inspired by local stories and our theme of food. Bring along your own story or musical instrument and add a further local twist! Or just sit back and enjoy the assured storytelling of Alex Patience and the improvised multi-instrumental support of live music by Donald McNeill on keyboard,

guitar, mandola, fiddle, stand-up bass and banjo. Expect stories in all shapes and sizes covering themes of love, birth, death, magic, history, loss, conflict, joy, innocence, betrayal, relationships and humour. An event for all the family!

Alexandria Patience comes from a fisher family and grew up in Fraserburgh. She tells some of the big traditional stories but from a woman’s point of view and tops and tails heart tugging drama wi a bit o a laugh and an occasional song. Alex is the Scottish Book Trust ‘Reading Champion’ for 2016-17 and was awarded a Creative Scotland Traditional Artist support 2012-3. She has toured internationally as a performer and storyteller. In 2014 she was invited to create and perform a large scale on-site storytelling event in Calgary, Canada.

Donald McNeill, is an experienced performer, arranger, improviser and prolific composer of traditional-style folk music.

Lunch in the Tasty Tarland Tent with Spider on a BicycleSunday 25th September

Serving from 12 – 2pm with musical accompaniment from members of the Ceilidh CollectiveSpider on a Bicycle is a brand new start up run by local sisters Emma and Hollie Petrie. Their Aboyne cafe will be opening in Autumn/Winter of this year, focusing on providing fresh, simple and tasty home made food, great coffee and creating a space in which the whole community feels welcome. Sunday lunch at the Tarland Food and Music Festival will be a simple, affordable and yet delicious affair, with two different hot dishes on offer (vegetarian chilli and vegetarian coconut dahl) alongside handmade baking, and a small selection of bottled juices/sparkling drinks, giving a flavour of what is to come in the cafe.
