    1/1

    When I was little,

    every time I

    received a gift or

    compliment, my parents would

give a me a look. This look was

wide-eyed with a slight turn of

the cheek and a nod of the head.

It was the look that said, You

    better say thank you.

My parents taught me aboutmanners, and they also taught

    me about respect. Manners and

respect seem to be lacking in the

    general population lately. I feel

as if in the last five years society

has made a decision to become a

    bunch of meanies.

    Recently, a video has circulat-

ed of a woman on a bus, moni-

toring a field trip with students.

    The students proceed to belittle

this woman about her looks and

    weight until the woman begins

to cry. They curse at her and

    describe her as stinky and

smelly. They tell her shes fat

and has saggy breasts. The berat-

ed woman can do nothing but

    weep.

As a woman who has been

heavy-set most of her life, I

    know that these comments can

    wreck a persons self image.

    People who lack self confidence

    belittle themselves every day

    already, and these mean com-

    ments give validation to those

    negative feelings. These feelings

    can be debilitating.

I could only watch two min-

    utes of the 10-minute video

because of the emptiness I felt

    watching it. Whats the reason

    for this cruelty? What possesses

people to feel superior to some-

one they dont know? I assume

the kids were in junior high

    because usually this behavior is

caused by a lack of confidence

and a need to go along with the

    crowd.

But it doesnt stop with junior

    high. Ive witnessed this first

hand because I teach at various

    colleges.

    Generally, I teach students

    who are 18- to 20-years-old. I

once had a student ask me Why

the f- should I listen to you? I

replied, You dont have to listen

to me. You can leave at any time,

which I think you should take

    under advisement.

Its always good to throw in a

big word so they at least learn

    something.

Luckily, I have the gift of

quick wit. I can usually turn a

    mean comment around into

    something humorous. Or if I

    cant think of anything, starring

at the student until the point of

    uncomfortableness can make

them see the error of their ways.

After five years of teaching, I

can deal with the various gaffes

and eye rolls. After all, I have the

power of the grade. But I do

admit to a few cry sessions of

my own in my car after a particu-

    larly trying class.

We can speculate the reasonsfor this behavior. The usual caus-

    es present themselves: unstable

home lives, low self esteem or

    peer pressure.

    The parents are obviously a

big issue as well. Im not sure

    where parents stopped teaching

their kids manners. Pardon me if

I sound old and crotchety (Im

only 31), but in my day we

    respected everyone for fear of

    our parents wrath.You didnt

    want to let them down.

    Some kids just arent lucky

enough to have great parents like

mine who can instill an unset-

    tling guilt that follows you

    through life.

    I think the worst punishment

    for those kids who video-taped

their mockery would be to show

them this video when they are

    30-years-old. It is hoped that

    they will have learned something

about life, people and respect by

that time. Then, theyll be able to

create their own scorn that will

    haunt them unremittingly.

As for the bus monitor, who is

    someones grandmother I might

add, the Internet and daytime tel-

    evision have brought this video

and issue to light. One website

has taken up a collection to be

given to the woman so she can

take a vacation. According toCBS news, the collection is now

    at $290,000.

This has put the pressure on

    the foul-mouthed kids and hope-

fully their parents as well. Not

all parents are bad, and Im sure

that knowing your child made a

    grandmother cry will unleash the

    punishment of a lifetime for

    those kids.

    If anything good came from

    this disgusting incident, at least

    the grandmother will have an

awesome vacation. I know as a

teacher, taking a little time away

    from students can help overcome

    malaise. Some young people are

    meritorious and shouldnt be

lumped in with those who wish

    to torment others.

    However, with that being said,

I havent seen an apple on my

    desk for quite some time.

    Letter to the Editor Policy

    COLUMNISTBy William H. Wild

It is astonishing and disheartening to see

most of the news media take such a casual

attitude toward the recent security leaks that

are endangering all of us and our allies. There is

almost a ho-hum attitude toward the constitutional

    battle emerging betweenAttorney General Eric

    Holder and Congress.

In both cases the discouraging reaction by too

many people - some of them Washington

experts and some ordinary folks - is that its all

politics. Of course its politics! But (like

Watergate) both matters involve criminal activi-

    ties.

Let me digress for a moment and explain that

the word politics is distorted beyond recognition

when it is used as an excuse or in a dismissive

sense as hardly worth your time. Decisions that

are made in a republic are necessarily political

and the only real measure of them or the events

surrounding them is whether they are wise - and

in this country constitutional. Consider that here

in Ohio when you hear people say that the redis-

tricting every 10 years should eliminate all poli-

tics. Sorry, democracy doesnt operate in a vacu-

    um.

In World War II one of the security slogans was

Loose lips sink ships. Loose lips now result in

stories in the New York Times that expose a dou-

ble agent recruited by British intelligence, thusendangering the agent and blowing the cover off

the operation, a significant penetration of Al

Qaeda operations in the Arabian Peninsula. The

Brits (and Israelis) were helping us (the CIA)

track suicide bombers aiming to visit the USA.

Do you suppose they just wanted to see Disney

    World?

Our noble press, quoting highly placed admin-

istration sources, has also revealed that the com-

puter virus weapon called Stuxnet that disrupted

Irans nuclear program has been succeeded by

something even more powerful, now called

Flame. It can turn any computer anywhere into a

robot spy. The Russians got wind of it and it is

even being studied by United Nations agencies.

    Some secret!

The politics of this involves the very strong

suspicion that our anti-spy prowess involves a bitof presidential imagery coming coincidentally,

or course in a presidential campaign. We learn

that Obama decides which drone will strike which

bad guy and when. Perhaps voters will be

impressed, but the intelligence agents in our allied

capitals are neither impressed nor amused.

Our friends overseas are justly worried that

sharing secret information with the Americans is

wise. We are imperiled when communication

breaks down because of lack of trust. We are

imperiled when someone - especially a highly

placed administration source - thinks secrets are

news, especially when it can have a nice political

    effect.

Theres more than a little irony in the

    Presidents declaration of executive privilege

(thus a secret) in the Justice Department papers

held by Attorney General Eric Holder in theOperation Fast & Furious matter that Congress is

investigating. Who is responsible for this stupid

gun-running case and why is the Justice

Department protecting him, her or them? Politics

is why - and only politics can unravel it all.

The security leaks are to be investigated by two

district attorneys appointed by Holder. Some

Republicans would like a special prosecutor,

ignoring how badly that has worked in the past. It

would be nice to see some attention paid by

Holders duo to the role of a responsible free press

when dealing with state secrets. Uh huh. The New

York Times would say thats just politics.

    Even as national

    security leaks,executive

    privilege locks

    I

was a young lad of 19, when the Fab

Four crossed the Atlantic and took

America by storm. The first time weas a nation were able to view them was on

Feb.y 16, 1963 on the Ed Sullivan Show as

Ed uttered in his unique voiceRight here

on our stage ladies and gentlemen the.

Beatles. The crowd went crazy and the

    whole country became mesmerized.

    Their music, hairstyle, Carnaby Street

clothing, it was one big package that would

last a decade. Every weekend Beatles parties

popped up across the U.S. Beatle wigs for the

guys so they looked like the Fab Four were

showing up everywhere. The old duck tail

DA from the 50s was gone forever. Hop sack

pants, wild shirts, boots, it all came to town

    with the Beatles explosion.

Today, Ticket to Ride invites you to join

their magical mystery tour exploring the

Beatles revolution in popular music and cul-ture on Tuesday, July 3 at Nor th Park starting

    at 7 p.m.

Ticket to Ride uses authentic Beatle

    instruments, amplifiers and costumes like

those in Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club

Band with awesome renditions of your

favorite Beatle classics. They create the spir-

it of the Fab Four that have audiences raving

about them eight days a week. Bring a chair,

refreshments, arrive early for best seating

and get ready to come together for an

evening youll truly enjoy and talk about all

summer. Tell your friends. this is huge. See

you at North Park next Tuesday, Ill be your

announcer to get the show started promptly at

    7.

The mayor and I taped our segments last

Sunday for the July/August edition of

Springboro 45066 using MVCCs new vir-

tual studio which is totally unbelievable. It

looks like a major network set costing mil-

lions of dollars. Air dates are listed below so

set your DVR to make sure you catch the new

    edition.

Lucy and I were down at the Cincinnati

Outlet Mall back in May to purchase some

new Crocs for summer. When we were leav-

ing we noticed a Saxbys Coffee and since

there was a sign up that Saxbys was coming

to Springboro in June we popped in for a

couple of lattes and some conversation with

    the store manager.

I obtained the email address and phone

number of the owners who l ive in

Springboro. I wanted to tape a segment for

the July/August edition and feature their new

store on the show. After the contact their mar-

keting gal called and asked for some pictures

for a mural they had planned for a wall in the

store. I fired off about 15 jpgs that I had in

my library and their art director made it hap-

pen. Its very cool, you need to stop in andsee it this week.

The show also features segments with UPS

driver and Springboro resident Ron Sowder

who was presented with a 50-year service

award without an accident and over one mil-

lion miles. We also check in with Lisa and

Vicky at the library, Dave Thompson at the

Coffman Family Y and Tom and Brad at

Heatherwoode for seasonal updates. I check

in with Lee Laa Yoga on North Main Street,

and the mayor features Dr. Greg McDonald

on the Meet Your Neighbor segment and does

a ground breaking with update at the new

Rotary Park on South Main Street, in the his-

    toric district.

Its a fun, fast 30 minutes thats all about

our great community. The show will air 30

times during July and August at differenttimes during the day. Here are a few to set

your DVR to or just watch at the time.

Recently, word came out that star

    Springboro Panther center

    Maverick Morgan will play his

college basketball for the Illinois Fighting

    Illini.

Morgan had been heavily recruited by

    many colleges, including Xavier, Minnesota,

    Wisconsin, Vanderbilt, Iowa State, Toledo,

USC and the University of Dayton Flyers.

As a 1984 UD graduate at a Flyer season

ticket holder, I was following Morgans

recruitment as closely as possible. There are

many Internet experts who think they

know who the top recruits are and where they

are going to college.A few days before Morgans announce-

ment, a UD basketball website reported that

UD had as good a chance as anyone to sign

him. That made me hopeful that, following

his upcoming senior season at SHS, he would

    be a Flyer.

Unfortunately for Flyer fans, he choseIllinois. He said that he was very familiar

with new Illini coach John Groce, who was

formerly at Ohio University. He said he is

excited about the opportunity to play in the

    Big Ten.

In spite of the fact that he did not choose

UD, Im happy for him, too. He will be play-

ing in a tough league, and he should have an

opportunity to get a great deal of national

publicity. After his time in Illinois, maybe

hell have a chance to play in the NBA.

Good luck at Illinois, Maverick. Maybe the

Illini will play UD (hopefully in Dayton) and

the Flyer Faithful will still have an opportu-

nity to see you play college ball in person.

Hopefully, youll have a good game. I do

hope if this game takes place that youdont win, however. I am a UD fan after all.
