Mainly, we went to see her, but we also took in a few of the sights. We saw the One World Trade Center, visited the Holocaust Museum and the Irish Famine Memorial, rode lots of subways, saw Coney Island, and took a ride on the Staten Island Ferry. We also took lots of pictures of the Statue of Liberty. In honor of Independence Day this month, I thought I’d share a little about “Miss Liberty,” and how she can remind us of our faith. There are 168 steps to the top of this 302 foot structure. A gift from the people of France, she weighs 225 tons and symbolizes freedom, generosity of spirit, and welcome for all people. In essence, she is a lighthouse. 200 panes of amber glass send out a 2000 watt beacon at the top of her torch. She strides over broken shackles, declaring triumph over tyranny. Her seven spiked crown radiates to the seven seas and seven continents. At her base are the words from Emma Lazarus: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” From a faith perspective, just as “Lady Liberty” is a lighthouse, so Jesus is the light of the world. He too strides over broken shackles; the shackles of sin that seek to bind us. As Chris Tomlin sings, because of Jesus, ”Our chains are gone, we’ve been set free.” Miss Liberty has a spiked crown. Similarly, Jesus wore a crown of thorns, with spikes radiating out to all the earth. And like Emma Lazarus wrote for the statue christened, “Liberty Enlightening the World,” Jesus gave us a comparable invitation, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.Matthew 11:28 - continued on next page - CHURCH STAFF Pastor Margi Colerick [email protected] Secretary Shawn VanWagner [email protected] Custodian Rick Achenbach Organist Gisela Weber Music Team Leader Katie Rebecchi Choir Director George Blume Tidings Editor Shawn VanWagner Nursery Devene Salvino

    TIBLOW TIDINGS July 2012

In May, Bob and I took a road trip to New York, to visit our daughter, Baileigh.

At her base are the words from Emma Lazarus: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”

How blessed we are to have easy and free access to books both from our church library and the public library across the street. Even the homebound can benefit because of an outreach program operated by the Friends of the Library. A homebound Bonner resident can request a specific book, subject matter, or tell the librarian what type of book they enjoy reading, and it will be delivered to them. You can help by getting the word out that this service is available and by promoting the Friends of the Library. You are also encouraged to use the church library to further your own education and inspire you to grow in Christ. Share your love of reading with others and in doing so you express your love for them.

Thanks to all the donations of cakes, cookies and brownies and to the 19 of you who helped at Micah Ministry June18th. Because of your help, we fed over 500 men, women and children and 300 more for seconds. The clothing donations were appreciated also. What a fantastic witness of ministry. Thanks to the church for the money from Outreach to pay half of the meal. The Reece Nichols group paid the other half. Put September 17th on your calendar for the next opportunity to serve. We are a caring church.

Jesus is our beacon, guiding the faithful to freedom. His gracious spirit offers forgiveness when none is deserved. And like the father in the story of the Prodigal Son, Jesus lifts His arms in welcome, extended to everyone.

In this month of celebration and remembering the national gift of freedom, won so many years ago, and still today, protected by young men and women who serve in harms way, may we also remember the One who lived, died and rose again to give us eternal freedom. May we remember Miss Liberty and what she stands for…. And remember too, our faith and what it stands for.

It is not too late to sign up for our trip to Eureka Springs in August. If you are interested contact Dick or Marilyn Laverentz at 913-745-8445.

The BEAS had a 25th Anniversary Celebration in June. Dorothy Sechrist read the by-laws of our organization, Twila Williams presented some history and introduced guests, and Alice Campbell reviewed some trip hi-lites. In the beginning, the city’s Tiblow Transit bus was used for local trips, charter buses were leased for overnight trips, there were several plane trips and many, many trips by private vehicles. Memories were shared. Scrapbooks were enjoyed.

June 16th, eleven people went to Roasterie Coffee for an informative tour. The group then traveled to Manny’s Mexican Restaurant for a delicious lunch.

On the 23rd of June, we celebrated Marlin Kerby’s 90th birthday at a picnic in his honor.

The next meeting, on July 7th, will be hosted by Marcia Atkinson and Mary Whitney. The group will tour the Money Museum on July 19th.

    Alice Campbell, Co-chair

The July get together will be Sunday, the 15th, 6:30 p.m. at the home of Warren and Jane Hanks.

It will be a dessert only night - Build Your Own Ice Cream Sundae - regular and sugar free ice cream, bananas, lemonade and decaf sun tea will be provided. Please bring a topping of your choice to share. RSVP to Jane at 441-1854 by Friday, July 13th. To keep from having only chocolate syrup for the sundaes, Jane will coordinate the toppings menu when you RSVP.

With it so hot already in June, an inside activity is being planned. Watching a movie has been suggested - yet, the Hanks' do not have built-in DVD or VCR capabilities on their large screen TV… and both are extremely electronically challenged. Come prepared to share a couple of your favorite summer time memories when you were a child, as we dive into our cool hot weather treat. Who knows...there may even be "pony rides" for the adventuresome!

Nifty 50's Plus was started several years ago as a group for "more mature" couples at FCC. The group gets together once a month for friendship and enjoyment. Activities vary from sharing a potluck meal in one of our homes, to going to see a movie, attending the Plaza Art Fair, supporting the summer band concerts and some USD 204 fundraising activities, Tiblow Days and more. If you meet the one qualification of our group (one person over 50) we invite you to join us! There are no dues, no officers, no meetings! You may come to any or all events! The extent of your involvement is your choice!

Christian Women's Fellowship met Wednesday, June 6 at 9:30 a.m. at the church. Betty Dunivan, hostess, served Apple Fritters and coffee to the ladies attending. They were Lorine Shannon, Dora Stolfus, Mary Whitney, Frances Haynes, Jackie Heffley, Barbara Lutte, and Jean Brown.

Lorine opened the meeting with prayer and then gave thoughts on doubting and related her own experiences in searching for her Lord.

She then called on committees. Jean read the minutes of the May meeting. Frances gave a report on the treasury with a balance of $473.28. She sent $100 to Indianapolis. It was then decided to give $100 to “Feed His Lambs” that is feeding 52 families. There are 50% free or reduced lunches in USD#204. It was decided to give $100 to Cancer Action. Vaughn-Trent wants backpacks in August for school. We are to check with Debbie.

Betty has sent 34 cards to shut-ins and sent out birthday cards to church members.(Betty is our "Sunshine Person.")

Jean had the lessons. "An Overview of the General Epistles" from the magazine "Just Women" was the first lesson. The second lesson was from "Jesus; Teaching in Parables." It was from Mark 4:1-9, a parable about the sower and the soils where he cast the seeds.

The next meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, (the 2nd Wednesday), because of July 4th on the first Wednesday. Jean Brown, Acting Secretary
