Whatever . . . from Fr. Robert

Remember to Save the Date for our third Diocesan Assembly on Saturday, September 22, at 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm, at

The Breslin Center at MSU in East Lansing. There will be Mass at 4:30 for that weekend. The Bishop has requested

that we do not have parish Masses that Saturday, so there will not be a 5pm Mass on Saturday September 22nd here at

St. John. I will not be able to attend the assembly because I had a wedding scheduled before the date for the assembly

was set. I really wanted to participate it should be a very fun and uplifting experience.

Throughout the morning and afternoon of the Assembly, attendees will have access to the Sacrament of Reconciliation

and the opportunity to interact with a variety of Catholic vendors and several ministries inside The Breslin Center.

Childcare will be available during select times throughout the day and attendees may purchase meals on site. There is no

cost to participate in the Assembly, but advance registration is necessary. To register,

Dear Parishioners,

Lent was a time to prepare for Easter- and hopefully we are enjoying the fruits now of those 40 days with the

Desert. Easter time is also a time of preparation- a time leading up to Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was poured out

into the Church and the Apostles. During these days let this be our prayer- to be open to the Holy Spirit, to receive more

of the Holy Spirit, and for the courage to respond always to His promptings.

Here is a beautiful prayer from St. Augustine that might be helpful.

“Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be

holy. Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy.

Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy. Amen.”

from Fr. Todd. . . . . .

It is a beau ful long-standing tradi on in the Catholic Church to interiorly prepare one’s self for Pentecost Sunday during which the Church commemorates the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, fulfilling thus what Our Lord promised before ascending into heaven that He will send us the “Paraclete”, “Consoler” or the “Advocate”.

GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE THIRD PERSON OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY and He is the LOVE WHICH “PROCEEDS FROM THE FATHER AND THE SON.”

He is the SANCTIFIER, the One who makes us holy, shapes Our Lord Jesus Christ’s image and life in us if we are faithful and obedient to His grace. This is the reason why WE MUST ALSO LEARN TO HAVE AN INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM BEING DOCILE TO THE INSPIRATIONS HE SENDS US MANY TIMES DURING THE DAY SO AS TO STAY ON THE PATH OF LOVE FOR GOD, THE PATH TOWARDS HOLINESS, which is nothing but OUR IDENTIFICATION WITH CHRIST, “TO BE OTHER CHRIST’S, CHRIST HIMSELF (ALTER CHRISTUS, IPSE CHRISTUS – St. Josemaria) ”.

Greeting in Christ! Our American society has an infatuation with celebrities. These celebrities can be movie stars, musicians, professional athletes, television personalities, or even politicians. It becomes a habit for some people to follow, to track, and to stay updated on the current happenings of their favorite celebrity. Celebrities are followed on Twitter and Facebook, their lives are examined on evening TV shows, and every public appearance or spotting of these celebrities is posted and shared for all to see. Not only is much of a celebrity’s life in public view, but many people also have come to place a great amount of time in using that celebrity as a model to living.

But, what if? What if people followed Jesus in the same way that many people follow celebrities? What would it look like if people would decide to fully embrace Jesus in the same way that they embrace celebrities? For starters, it would mean allowing oneself to go deeper in learning who Jesus truly is, what He taught, and how He lived His life. It would mean developing an ‘active’ relationship with Jesus, as opposed to merely viewing Him from a distance, as people do with celebrities. It would mean taking every opportunity that we can to learn more about Jesus and then truly encountering Him through a variety of different ways.

Be Peace Kyle

Catechesis of the Good

Shepherd is Montessori-

inspired approach to

Religious Education.

Originally developed in Rome

in the 1950’s, the materials are

based on the Bible, Liturgy

and Sacraments, and is true to our Catholic Tradition, and

Church teaching.

The goal of CGS is to help the child grow in relationship with

God: We believe that God and the child have a unique

relationship with one another particularly before the age of six

and that the growth of this relationship should be assisted by the

adult, but is directed by the Spirit of God within the child.

Apart from this emphasis on leading the child to discover his

natural relationship with God (as opposed to a primary focus on

teaching the child about God and the Church), a chief difference

is that CGS is not based on a published curriculum. It is handed

on through a series of formation courses for the catechist that

include discussion of the important themes of our Faith and how

they are shared with children. Adults also experience prayer and

celebration as it will be experienced with the children and much

more. Each course is approximately 90 hours.

In addition to the trained teachers, CGS relies on a prepared

environment with beautiful materials that allow the children to

engage with the Scripture stories and with literature. This special

environment is called the atrium.

We hope to develop a Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

program here at St. John the Evangelist. Is there anyone in

the parish who is already trained in the method? If so, we would

be profoundly grateful if you might consider coming forward for

a year to help us get started.

We are also looking for volunteers who

would be willing to take the CGS

training. The parish will pay for the

training in exchange for a commitment to

volunteer here in the parish for at least

two years. Contact me if you might be

interested or want to know more!

Week 31: Please encourage my mom if you see her! Thank you for praying for both of us!

Fish Fry

The hall filled with friends and neighbors. People visited, enjoying each other’s company and a good meal together. We had new parishioners and old timers enjoying each other’s company in a friendly Christian atmosphere. To the many friends I have known for decades, and those of you who I just met, who came to try our fish and enjoy a night out, Thank you!

You might think that there is a great profit made in the fish fry. Actually, two thirds of the money we make goes directly to food costs. Fish is expensive. There is also a large amount of labor involved in making this event happen. The Knights are all about service, so volunteering for these events, and turning them into a time of Christian fellowship and Church community, fits nicely into the realm of the Knights of Columbus. We need that community time to get to know our fellow parishioners; to come together and meet, talk and grow closer throughout the years.

We need Knights who are willing to sacrifice; to be there when others are working or at other commitments. There has to be a core so devoted to the mission of Jesus Christ, that they are willing to practically live these weeks of lent in the kitchen. I have met many people like that this year in the Knights. These people, and dozens more, have helped me see what it means to work unnoticed and unseen; they seek no publicity.

Countless hours of work are accomplished by Knights weekly that no one ever knows about. Ken Claxton practically lived in the Activity Building kitchen over the last six weeks. Bill and Melanie French worked, coached and directed, and put up with me and my wife, as we tried to learn the Fish Fry Business. To everyone who helped: those who made deserts; cooked fish, fries, shrimp, etc; washed tables and setup; collected money; and anyone doing everything I forgot to mention, Thank you. And you who joined us for dinner, we wish to say thank you.

For a woman facing an

unplanned pregnancy,

words matter. Be

assured that it’s OK to

say:

1. “Congratulations!”

Yes, it sounds simple, and it is. But there were so many

instances during my first pregnancy when people simply

didn’t know if they should congratulate me or not. After all,

was it even a good thing? Was I happy about being 21 and

pregnant? Allow me to assure you–it’s ok to congratulate a

young mom and it will help her see that it is ok to be happy

about her pregnancy.

2. “How are you feeling about everything?”

During my pregnancy, most people avoided the issue of the

scandal that was my unplanned pregnancy completely. It

was much easier not to talk about the (literal and figurative)

elephant in the room…most people just skirted around the

fact that I was definitely not a normal mom-to-be… I found

myself just wanting to stand on a chair and scream, “Can

we all please stop acting like this is normal? Because it’s

not!” It’s ok to address her and her emotions--–find out

how she’s feeling. If she wants to talk, she’ll talk.

Offertory Observation… The disciples in today’s Gospel came to know Jesus in the breaking

of the bread. When we share what we have with those who are in

need, we, too, will discover Jesus in our midst.

Vocation Views... Jesus opened the minds of his followers to understanding of

scripture. He pronounced them as his witnesses. Be the hands and

The Parish has been a busy place over Spring Break! Thanks to a gracious donor, a new handicap accessible door was installed at the church. It is on the south side door close to the Scared Heart statue. I hope this creates an added convenience to those who come to worship and pray. Repairs to the roof at the Fr. Harvey Activity Center were done this week. There was a leak over the gym that needed to be fixed, and Good's Roofing was able to repair that before the spring rains started. I am still receiving bids on repairs to the stone work and roof at the Chapel and hope to have an update soon. If you would like to contribute to any projects that we have here at the parish. Please contact me at 810-629-2251.

Mission Statement: As disciples of Jesus Christ at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Parish, we are called to work for the salvation of all, sharing the Good News of God’s love, mercy, and forgiveness, while serving one another.

SESTA BACKGROUND: SESTA is bipartisan legislation that enables state law enforcement officials to take legal action against individuals or businesses that violate federal sex trafficking laws without inadvertently affecting good actors who are not knowingly facilitating sex trafficking. SESTA also clarifies that victims of trafficking can seek civil remedy against the websites that facilitated their victimization. The National Human Trafficking Hotline has received nearly 2,000 reports of trafficking facilitated through online advertisements.

Now, Polaris urges Congress to turn its attention to reauthorizing the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA), which expired in Sept. 2017. The TVPA provides the legal foundation in the United States to combat human trafficking and authorizes the federal funds used to provide essential domestic and international anti-trafficking programs to support to victims and survivors.

TVPA BACKGROUND: The Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) originally passed in 2000 and has been reauthorized four times since. Three bills were introduced in 2017 to reauthorize the TVPA, either in whole or in part, ahead of its expiration in Sept. 2017. Polaris is supportive of all three of the bills. Along with reauthorizing funding to combat trafficking, the bills contain new provisions aimed at addressing current policy gaps. In particular, they strengthen the Department of State’s Trafficking In Persons (TIP) Report by ensuring countries are more accurately analyzed and ranked. It also exempts restitution for trafficking survivors from federal taxes, bolsters efforts to keep goods made from forced labor from entering the United States, and increases support for the U.S. Advisory Council on Human Trafficking.

Brother Knights and Fellow Parishioners,

The K of C Miracle League Tootsie Roll Drive on March 24th was a big success thanks to all

the men and women that donated their time. Thank you to all who bought Tootsie Rolls. The

children who will benefit from this handicap accessible baseball field are many.

The Lenten Fish Fry was a great success, and each volunteer should be very proud of the fact

that we served, on average, over 100 meals an hour each of those Fridays! We appreciate all

who came and enjoyed dinner and comradery.

Thursday, April 26th, in the Activities Center will be the annual Pastoral Appreciation Dinner.

This year the honoree is Fr. Robert Copeland. Bob and Bev Juip are chairing the dinner again

this year. Reservations must be in by April 19th, with checks made out to Knights of Columbus.

A form is in the bulletin and may be turned in to the Parish office.

The Nick French Memorial Golf Outing sponsorship and team forms are available (see next

week’s bulletin). Please help in anyway, because this benefit helps the Youth Group and also

provides scholarships for students at St. John and Powers High Schools. Last year the Outing

was such a success we were able to provide 4 scholarships.

At the June 19th K of C social meeting we will be celebrating Fr. David Harvey's 50th

anniversary of ordination and his birthday. I am not allowed to say how many years.

This year many of you are aware by now of the Terquasequacentennial (175th anniversary) of

St. John the Evangelist. We will need help with planned activities. Those with stories or

knowledge of St. John history please let me know.

Membership is very important to the success of the Knights of Columbus. This year Supreme is

offering any member who recruits a new member before June 30th, will have his name go into a

drawing. On July 1st, ten lucky winners will receive a trip to Dublin Ireland for the World

Meeting of Families.

A final reminder to all Council 7418 members, we will be having nominations for officers

starting the first Tuesday of May. All members who are 3rd degree qualify to be an officer, so all

members including the newer and younger 3rd degree members please attend. Being an officer

in the Knights is very rewarding.

The Men's Golf League, sponsored by the K of C, begins Monday, April 30th, at 3:45 pm at

Tyrone Hills . There will be a pre-league meeting at 4:30 on April 23rdat Tyrone Hills. This is

open to all men golfers or hackers.

Knights of Columbus Assembly 2031

From the desk of the Navigator

I wish everybody a very happy and holy Easter Season. The winter is having a hard time

leaving this year, although we have not been blessed with all the snow that has been going

around us.

Our next Corporate Communion is at St. John’s on May 12th, 5:00pm Mass. We hope to have

a good turnout. The social baldric can be worn with the tuxedo or dress suit.

Mother’s day is May 13, we wish all our Ladies a wonderful day.

Our wood cutters are very busy cutting and stacking wood, and as always everyone is

welcome. Please contact one of the Knights if you are interested in helping. We cut on

Wednesday and Saturday morning.

Our next meeting is April 19th at 7:00 pm. We will distribute our last year’s funds list so we

can make recommendations for this year. We will also have nomination of officers for the

coming year. The position for Comptroller is open, classes are provided for this position and I

will arrange to attend.

The next Exemplification will be at St. Mary’s Parish and School in Charlotte on Saturday

April 21st. We have one candidate going.

On the calendar, our 4th degree Christmas party this year is scheduled for December 15, at

Holy Spirit parish. 5:00pm Mass with Corporate Communion, and the party after.

Once spring arrives, let’s all pray for a good

planting season and warmer weather with

the necessary rain.

Pray that all our members stay well and in

good health, and pray for our country, our

political leaders, and peace in the world.

Yours in Christ,

Vic Huddas
