The 2nd Annual DAPCEP Real McCoy Awards is a celebration of Southeast Michigan’s Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM) professionals. Real McCoy awardees represent excellence in STEMM; they are proud members of the community; and they foster a commitment to motivate the next generation of STEMM professionals – our youth!

At DAPCEP, our mission is to expose, prepare and motivate historically underrepresented students to pursue education and careers in STEMM. This annual fundraising event enables us to continually grow and improve our services to Detroit area youth.

On September 12, 2013, The 2nd Annual DAPCEP Real McCoy Awards opens with networking among key sponsors, award recipients and local dignitaries. Guests will enjoy a strolling dinner, lively music and the inspiring highlight of the evening - the awards ceremony. Our sponsors will have choice opportunities to underscore their roles in STEMM and their commitments to supporting DAPCEP youth.

Thanks to proud supporters like you, in 2012, corporate, community and educational institutions embraced the importance of the Real McCoy Awards and raised over $90,000! This funding supported 540 of the 2,273 youth served in our 2012 Saturday Series programming. From forensics to aerodynamics; from Computer Aided Design to aerospace engineering, Detroit-area youth experienced the wonders of STEMM and the power of education. Your support this year will have an even greater impact on the STEMM field development of Detroit area youth.

Why Elijah McCoy?Fellow Detroiter, Elijah McCoy, was a mechanical engineer and inventor of a lubricator for steam engines, which revolutionized the industrial machine industry. He was also an entrepreneur and was responsible for a total of 57 patents. The term “the real McCoy” refers to professional demand for his authentic machine lubricating device. His accomplishments and contributions paved the way for today’s leaders in STEMM.

The Real McCoy Awardees are a distinguished group of professionals we believe capture the essence of Elijah McCoy. They exhibit successes in their respective STEMM occupations and disciplines, and deserve recognition for their accomplishments and contributions to elevating the next generation toward STEMM fields.

We also recognize DAPCEP students as Junior Real McCoys, who are a sample of Detroit Public School students who produced winning projects at the Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit. We are proud of their achievements and hope this recognition will propel them to outstanding careers in STEMM.

Finally, we proudly honor a corporate partner for its leadership in STEMM and contributions to empowering youth.

Jeffrey Morris, 2012 DAPCEP alum: “The experiences that I embarked upon with DAPCEP are experiences that I will never forget. It changed my life forever... Last summer I had an internship with an engineering company, which DAPCEP recommended me for, and while I was there, I used the skills I learned from DAPCEP in the internship. As a result, they offered me to come back the next summer and work again.”

Myrtle Brooks, 1979 DAPCEP alum:“At fifteen years old, I sat in my first engineering class with Dean Hammond as the program director at the University of Detroit Mercy. I went on to get paid internships at Detroit Edison and General Motors... I now have almost 30 years’ experience as a Quality Specialist and Manufacturing Engineer. As a result, all six of my children attended DAPCEP also.”
