LOCAL THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2015 By Meshaal Al-Enezi KUWAIT: The Court of Appeals yesterday adjourned the hearing of a case in which a num- ber of citizens, including former MPs are charged with breaking into the parliament. The adjourn- ment came to study a request to change one of the judges. The court set September 9th as the date for the next hearing. The Criminal Court had acquitted all defendants but the public prosecution challenged the ruling and took the case to the Appeals Court. Meanwhile, lawyer Mohammed Al-Jassim who represents former MP Musallam Al-Barrak in the case rejected bringing his client to court with shackled feet, as well as the presence of masked special forces inside the court room. Lawyer Jassim also objected to the presence of one of the judges who was a member of the pre- vious panel at the Criminal Court. Barrak was transported from prison to court in a heavily guarded convoy consisting of state security, traf- fic police, the investigations’ department and central prison security officers. New PAAFRA director Oil minister Dr Ali Al-Omair recently dis- missed the acting Public Authority for Agricultural and Fish Resources Affairs (PAAFRA) Director Nabila Al-Khalil after two years in office and promoted Faisal Al-Hasawi as acting PAAFRA director and manager of the Agriculture Department. Monitoring devices A bedoon (stateless) man was recently arrest- ed at Amghara scrap yard with possession of eight wireless devices capable of monitoring Ministry of Interior (MOI) wireless communica- tion waves, said security sources. Case papers indicate that the suspect seemed confused when a police patrol stopped him and thus his vehicle was thoroughly searched and the devices were found. The suspect was referred to the State Security Department for further inves- tigations. Truckloads of seafood denied entry Two trucks loaded with 10 tons of fish and shrimps were banned entry yesterday by the imported food stuff department at Nuwaiseeb land border exit. The shipment did not match the GCC Unified Imported Food Specifications and was then returned to the country of origin. Anti-imported fish campaign In a related development, Capital Governor Thabet Al-Muhanna yesterday met with repre- sentatives of fish importers who complained that the Fishermen Union had launched anti- imported fish campaigns to reduce imports and thus increase the prices of local fish. The importers also said that fishing boats go out for 5-10 days before they return with their catch to the market without examining the fish’ health validity. More than 200 residents of the building were evacuated, as the base- ment was used as a carpentry shop and warehouse for furniture and foam material. The fire was brought under control in a short time and kept from spreading elsewhere. No injuries were reported. Another fire broke out in a house under construction in Zahra and was put out by Sabhan fire center and backed by Mishref center team. The fire start- ed in leftovers and construction material out- side the house. Meanwhile, a vehicle caught fire in Jabriya and was responded by Hawally firemen. In another incident, a power gener- ator in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh caught fire, prompting Jleeb firemen to respond and put out the minor fire quickly. Water leak A call was received about an abnormal water leak at a building in Abu Halifa. Mangaf fire center went to the building, evacuated all residents and cut the power. Water was found leaking from the 12th floor. Furthermore, a shack made from corrugated galvanized iron was found built in the area in violation of fire safety regulations. An investigation was opened. Ring Hawally firemen headed to Mubarak hos- pital in response to an emergency call about a woman with a ring stuck in her finger. By Hanan Al-Saadoun KUWAIT: The Interior Ministry’s Nationality and Passports Department will start from January 1, 2016 to implement Article 12 of the Foreigners’ Residency Law 17/1959 and Article 159 of the implementation rules of Foreigners’ Residency Law 640/1987 which states that “it is not allowed for the residency permit given to a foreigner to exceed the validity of his passport,” Interior Ministry Assistant Undersecretary for Nationality and Passports Major General Sheikh Mazen Al- Jarrah Al-Sabah said. Major General Sheikh Mazen Al-Jarrah added the National and Passports Sector is exert- ing all efforts to develop the work systems to ensure the comfort of the citizen and expat and make it easier to process transactions. He said this measure is in the interest of citi- zens and expatriates, besides the period granted before its imple- mentation is enough for all to check the validity of their passports and adjust their situation before heading to Residency Affairs Office to get the new residency. Once the passport expires, the residency visa will likewise be voided according to the new law, and no new residency will be issued until the pass- port is renewed. Procedure Major General Sheikh Mazen Al-Jarrah urged expatriates to check the validity of their pass- ports and renew them before they expire and then go to the Residency Affairs Department to register the new passport information and trans- fer the residency information from the old to the new passport. He also urged citizens to check their domestic help passports to avoid any viola- tion. He said there is continued coordination with Relations and Security Information Department to launch awareness campaigns for citizens and expats. He said that brochures in five languages, Arabic, English, Hindi, French and Urdu were printed, as well as a roll up about this law that will be distributed to all government and private establishments, as well as NGOs. Six recycling plants would be relo- cated to the two-million square meters site as per the recommendation that came based on a request from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Acting Director of Kuwait Municipality Ahmad Al-Manfouhi said the committee discussed several topics on the agenda, including solid waste, used tires, temporary slaughter house and advertisements. Al-Manfouhi lauded the efforts of the commerce and industry ministry to solve the problem of the site where used tires are currently disposed of, saying that removing the site eliminates one of the main obsta- cles standing in front of carrying out the South Saad Al-Abdullah housing project. Municipality approves new tire recycling site KFSD signs three equipment contracts By Hanan Al-Saadoun KUWAIT: Director General of Kuwait Fire Services Directorate (KFSD) Lieutenant General Yousuf Al- Ansari signed three contracts with representatives of Satco Engineering Company to supply a small opera- tions engine equipped with the latest equipment and specifications at a total cost of KD 257,370. The system contains HD video system and works with heat vision and internet communications. The sec- ond contract was signed with Mohammad Abdelrahman Al-Bahar Establishment to deliver eight ladder vehicles of various heights at a total cost of KD 2.1 million. The third contract was signed with Atomac Cars Company to lease 27 four-wheel-drive vehicles for fire centers at a total cost of KD 279,936.
