Pastor’s Corner
Dear Friends in Christ,
One of my new Prince of Peace friends sent on a little gem from
Facebook. I sometimes think these tidbits can be a little shallow,
but I find this one to be thoughtful, especially based on some of what
Jesus has been saying in Luke lately. I do not know the name of the
author.
Six Little Stories with Lots of Meaning
Once all villagers decided to pray for rain. On the day of prayer, all
the people gathered, but only one boy came with an umbrella.
THAT is faith!
When you throw babies in the air, they laugh because they know you
will catch them. THAT is trust!
Every night we go to bed without any assurance of being alive the
next morning, but still we set the alarms to wake up.
THAT is hope!
We plan big things for tomorrow in spite of zero knowledge of the
future. THAT is confidence!
We see the world suffering, but still, we get married and have
children. THAT is love!
On an old man’s shirt was written a sentence “I am not 80 years old;
I am sweet 16 with 64 years of experience.
THAT is attitude!
Have a happy day and live your life like these six stories.
Remember – Good friends are the rare jewels of life, difficult to find
and impossible to replace!!
I hope this helps you...it did me!
I will be back to my Reflections on Tuesdays after morning and
evening prayer at 9:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Have a blessed and good week!

October 2019
Dear Members of Prince of Peace,
Our collective response to the love and grace we’ve been shown in Christ Jesus has resulted in the vitality and
a real sense of mission at Prince of Peace. As we plan and look forward to 2020, we have an opportunity to
further expand the mission we all share. A quick review of the weekly life of our congregation demonstrates
the power of strong faith and shared love.
The work of our congregation is based in an enduring legacy of weekly worship that is conducted with respect
and reverence for the Word of God and the ever present need to find strength in the Eucharist.
The Local Missions Ministry Group is constantly reaching out to the needs in our surrounding communities.
The Little Shepherds Learning Center is an important ministry that has been associated with Prince of Peace
for over 19 years. It provides a nurturing and educational experience for pre-school and part-time kindergar-
ten students. The church calendar is full of important programs and work that expand constantly and often
include use of the church building by outside organizations. Expanding our involvement and financial support
of global organizations is largely supported by the annual Closet Cause rummage sale that involves so many
of our members.
During the Crushing Goliath campaign in 2013-2017, many people expressed an aspirational vision of new
mission possibilities as we retired the existing debt. Some of these goals have been achieved, including staff
additions of Directors of Youth Ministries and Music, but many have not yet been addressed.
To continually press forward, we are conducting the “God’s 20/20 Vision” stewardship program for financial
and participation support in 2020. We need your involvement and commitment to enable us to continue to
expand the mission programs of the congregation.
Watch for additional details as the program rolls out in October and we look forward to welcoming
Pastor John back after a well-deserved sabbatical.

Lutheran Social Services Thanksgiving Dinners
This fall we are supporting the Lutheran Social Services Thanksgiving program. LSS will provide 3500 complete
Thanksgiving dinners to needy families throughout Central Ohio. The turkeys have been provided and we are
asked to donate the other items for 100 dinners. It would be great if we could donate even more!
To make individual contributions more manageable we are asking the following:
Members of the Choir, Handbell Choir or any of our Bible Studies are asked to donate starchy items:
2 pouches of mashed potatoes (or one box)
1 box (or bag) of stuffing mix
1 gravy packet
Preschool families are asked to donate the following canned goods:
2 cans of fruit (suggestions: peaches, applesauce, pears)
2 cans of corn
3 cans of green beans
Everyone else is asked to donate dessert items:
2 cans of pumpkin
1 jar of cranberry sauce
1 box of yellow cake mix
The quantities above are being given to a family of four.
We are collecting these items from Sunday October 20 until Saturday, November 16 on the shelves in the hallway.
Additionally LSS is looking for people to help pass out the dinners. There will be a sign-up sheet at the display.

POP’s Café
Thanks to Patti and Eric Thielking and Dana and John Herold,
our POP’s Café helpers last week.
This week, POP’s Café will serve quiche, Delaware sausage,
fresh fruit and yogurt.
Little Hats, Big Hearts TM
Once again, Prince of Peace members and friends
are asked to participate in the Little
Hats, Big Hearts program.
This tiny pop of red helps raise
awareness about congenital heart
defects.
Volunteers from around the country are helping the
American Heart Association celebrate American
Heart Month by knitting and crocheting red hats for
babies born in February at participating hospitals.
If you don’t knit or crochet but still want to help,
donations will allow us to purchase yarn.
Last year, we delivered 133 red hats--so let’s see if
we can surpass that this year! Hats need to be
completed by December 15.
Please check out the display in the Fellowship Hall
for yarn, patterns, or to make a donation.

On Sunday, October 27 at 9:30 a.m., Prince of Peace Adult Study will welcome guest speaker,
Mrs. Liliana Castillio Baiman, a former Dreamer who came to the U.S. in 1991 with her family seeking a better future.
She is a graduate of the University of Houston with degrees in political science and psychology and has been an
activist for immigration and social justice issues for over 15 years. She is also a naturalized U.S. citizen and a
candidate for the Columbus City Council. Please join us to learn more as she shares her immigration challenges and
experience with us.
According to Immigration Policy, The term “Dreamers” refers to undocumented young men and women who were
brought to the United States by their parents when they were children or teens. It is estimated that there are over one
million Dreamers currently residing in the U.S.
Since Dreamers are undocumented aliens who are not permitted to work legally in the US and are subject to
deportation, Congress proposed the Dream Act in 2001 to provide a multi-phase process for qualifying individuals
that would first grant conditional residency and, upon meeting further qualifications qualify for permanent residency.
Unfortunately, the Dream Act failed to pass then and, even though reintroduced numerous times over the years, has
continued to fail.
In 2012, President Barack Obama signed an executive order called DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) that
provided Dreamers with some level of protection from deportation by allowing them to apply for work permits and
classify them as low status for deportation. As a result, hundreds of thousands of undocumented youth have applied
and received DACA protections. They must renew their applications every two years and cannot have felonies or
serious misdemeanors on their records to remain eligible. We should recognize that with these permissions,
Dreamers work legally, pay taxes and contribute to Social Security. It is estimated that their households contribute
over $24 billion (after taxes) in spending power annually to the U.S. economy.
Plans to phase out DACA were announced by the Trump Administration in 2017 but implementation was put on hold
for six months to allow Congress time to pass the Dream Act or some other legislative protection for Dreamers.
Congress again failed to act and the six-month extension expired, but the phase-out of DACA was put on hold pending
several legal actions in our courts. Should the phase-out be upheld by the Supreme Court, the Dreamers will have no
protections and could face deportation to countries they do not know and cultures they are not a part of.

Pink Ribbon Girls With the start of October comes Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it
takes me back to my own personal battle with breast cancer almost 20
years ago. I was 48 years old when I was diagnosed, and for a year I
followed the traditional “slash, poison, and burn” protocols (aka surgery,
chemotherapy, and radiation) to treat the disease. My story is one of
support and success: I had the best health insurance, the best support
from family and friends (including many members of Prince of Peace), and
the best outcome of being cancer free. I can’t imagine traveling this road
without that incredible support.
It is for these reasons that I now volunteer for a group called
Pink Ribbon Girls, an organization begun and based in central Ohio that
provides services to men and women with breast cancer, and to women
with gynecological cancers. These services, provided free of charge
regardless of economic level or stage of the disease, include healthy meals
for the patients’ families, rides to treatment, housecleaning, and peer sup-
port.
In 2018, Pink Ribbon Girls provided patients and their members with 86,000 meals, 2,000 house cleanings, and 4,800
rides to treatment. This was all done through private and corporate donations, and a growing host of volunteers. Pink
Ribbon Girls has branched out to serving patients in the St. Louis, Missouri area and to the San Francisco Bay area.
(The inspiring story of the group’s founder, Heather Salazar, is featured in the September 26 issue of People magazine.)
The wonderful volunteers with whom I work are a mix of cancer survivors, friends and family of cancer patients, and
folks. All share a connection to cancer and a passionate drive to give back.
If you know of someone currently in treatment and would like more information about Pink Ribbon Girls, click the link, or
contact me at [email protected]. Please consider volunteering for or donating to this amazing organization.
And please, PLEASE, watch for signs that may signal the presence of a possible cancer. That includes you guys, too.

Emergency Procedures for Sunday School --a Refresher
In the unlikely event of evacuation due to fire, bomb threat or
active shooter, teachers are directed to exit the building immediately with
their students. Teachers will take their registration book with them for
attendance and parent contact information.
If you are in worship during such an emergency, you are advised to exit the building immediately through the closest
exit doors and plan to meet your child(ren) outside.
In the event of a medical emergency, church leaders are authorized to obtain medical care for your child and hereby
released from any further responsibility.
Children must be supervised at all times in the church. Please follow sign-in and sign-out Sunday school requirements.
For safety and security, once Sunday School session begins the classroom doors are closed and will remain locked. In
between sessions parents are welcome to visit Sunday School rooms.
The goal of the Children’s Ministry is to provide a positive, nurturing and inclusive Christian education program.
To ensure safety and learning opportunities for our students, we have a participation policy which is part of the
registration packet and also posted on the church website. These emergency procedures are reviewed by teachers
and provided to families.

Information and packets are posted on the website under the Little Shepherds tab.

Prince of Peace has owned and operated a Christian-based part-time learning center each school year since 2001. We
are thrilled to begin our 19th year of teaching ages 2.5 through Kindergarten Enrichment!
Bible lessons are taught in every classroom, at different levels of learning. Every class has a morning prayer, snack
prayer and goodbye prayer. The children have already learned the story of creation, Noah’s Ark, and that God made us
special. In October, we will hear stories about Moses and the 10 commandments, Daniel in the Lion’s Den, Jonah and
the Whale. All of these stories help the children learn that God loves and protects us.
In October, the Washington Township Firefighters will visit with their truck and meet with our older classes to talk about
fire safety. On Tuesday, October 29 and on Wednesday, October 30, the classes will have a costume parade through the
church. Children love to dress up and be a part of a parade at school!
Share the Good News! We have a few openings left in our Pre-K PM and Kindergarten Enrichment classrooms. To learn
more about our program you can review our Parent Handbook and program newsletters on the website.
