Dear Fraters,L’Shana Tovah and Happy New Year

I wish you all a year of good health, happiness and prosperity. Recently, we observed Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, two of the most sacred days in the Jewish calendar. We heard the sound of the Shofar at the start of the New Year and as a way of spiritual cleansing; we fasted on the Day of Atonement. During this period of sober and reverent reflection, we hope to resolve to improve ourselves in the upcoming year. Let us also hope and pray for a peaceful year.

Our first meeting in September was well attended with a very enthusiastic group of fraters; some long standing and some new to the fraternity. Dr. Rich Hirschinger provided us with the basis and benefits to our practices of setting up a web page and through the use of social media, communicate with both new potential patients and existing patients as well. Rich gave an outstanding presentation and was well received by all in attendance.

Our next meeting on Thursday, November 13th will feature Dr. Jin-Ho Phark, an Assistant Professor of Clinical Dentistry in the Division of Restorative Sciences at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC. His lecture will explore and discuss “Resin Infiltration – a non-invasive caries treatment option.” With Dr. Phark’s main interest in biomaterials, I am certain that this presentation will be cutting edge and provide us with another modality to restore our patients’ teeth to better health. Don’t miss this one.

Finally, I would like to thank all the members on our board for the huge showing at our last meeting. The board is an integral part of our chapter and I am very happy to report that by the attendance and contributions at the board meetings, our chapter will continue to move forward and provide you, the members, the best AO has to offer.

Fraternally, Paul

As my three year term as Regent concludes at the end of the year it is my pleasure to report that our two student chapters at USC (Tau) and UCLA (Alpha Tau) have a combined membership of 145 students and graduate residents. The Regency

helps to support and coordinate their joint initiation ceremonies in the fall. The Regency support student attendance at alumni chapter dinner meetings. The Regency helps to sponsor student attendance at international conventions and Alpha Omega leadership conferences. The Regency board meetings serve to coordinate the activities of our three local alumni chapters, Los Angeles, San Fernando Valley and BOCA (Beach Orange County Area), as well as those of the student chapters. The Regent is also responsible for coordinating the activities during the visitation of the International President. The current president is Avi Wurman of the Toronto chapter. His wife Sharon Sussman is also a dentist. The president-elect is Adam Stabholtz of the Jerusalem chapter, an endodontist and former dean of the

Hebrew University School of Dental Medicine. His wife Ayala is a periodontist. The number of women in dentistry is increasing and women are taking a more active role in Alpha Omega. This is a beneficial trend both locally, nationally and internationally.

The Regency’s main event is the annual Styrt/Manusov Dental Seminar. It has been an excellent CE meeting as well as a rare opportunity for fraters from all alumni chapters to renew old friendships. We are very excited about the upcoming Seminar Wednesday, March 25, 2015. The program will include Stan Malamed, Ziv Simon, Fehry Daftary and perhaps others. The proceeds from this event support the mission of the Regent which is primarily to support and encourage our student fraters who are the future of Alpha Omega as well as to continue to support the Regency’s educational activities and philanthropic obligations.

I will be attending the international convention in Tel Aviv this December. I encourage you to also consider attending to show your solidarity with Israel as well as Alpha Omega.

Holocaust Survivors oral Health Program

We are pleased to inform our members and friends about a wonderful public-private partnership between AO and Henry Schein Cares. The AO/HSC Holocaust Survivors Oral Health Program will have

a focus on providing care for the financially neediest individuals who are served by the Holocaust Survivor Assistance Programs administered by the network of Jewish Family and Children’s Service agencies and other entities.

We are fortunate to not only partner with Henry Schein and the outstanding Team Schein, but our program has also partnered with Ms. Aviva Sufian, White House Special Envoy for U.S. Holocaust Survivors Services, the Association of Jewish Family and Children’s Services (AJFCA), and Bedford Healthcare Systems.

January will be the official program launch with the intent of a three-year commitment. Every city will have an Alpha Omega Ambassador who will recruit dental volunteers from their chapter for participation. AO Southern California is proud to announce that Dr. Paul Selski will be the Alpha Omega Ambassador in Southern California.
