MayEvents And Activities For The Family

Springtime Tale With a touch of creativity and plenty of concentration, this oral springtime story will grow and grow! Begin the story by stating “I went for a walk in May and I saw _____.” Complete this sentence with a seasonal word or words, such as “daisies blooming” or “a boy flying a kite.” Then ask another family member to repeat your sentence and add another spring word or phrase. Continue the story by having each family member, in turn, repeat the entire sen-tence and add to it in a like manner. Put memory skills to the test by making the story as long as possible. No doubt this storytelling activity will be memorable!

Directions: Select at least one activity below to complete as a family by the end of May. (Challenge: See if your family can complete all three activities.)

Happy Birthday, Leo Lionni!

May 5 is the birthday of well-known children’s author and illustrator, Leo Lionni. Many of Lionni’s books teach lessons through

the use of animal characters and their adventures. Read and discuss with your family some of his many books this month. If desired, invite your child to use Lionni’s unique illustrations as a model to create his or her own artwork. Then have him or her write a story to accompany it.

A Color Of His Own (Alfred A. Knopf Books For Young Readers, 1997)

An Extraordinary Egg (Alfred A. Knopf Books For Young Readers, 199)

Fish Is Fish (Alfred A. Knopf, Inc.; 197)It’s Mine! (Random House, Inc.; 1996)Matthew’s Dream (Random House, Inc.; 1995)

National Pet Week To promote awareness of animal care, this event is held each year dur-ing the first full week of May. Explore with your family the many types of pets and their different needs and characteristics by playing Guess My Pet. To play this variation of the popular game Twenty Questions, one player thinks of a pet without revealing it. In turn, each remaining player asks him or her a question about the pet that can be answered by either “yes” or “no.” After receiving a response to the question, the player may guess the animal’s identity. If the player correctly names the animal, he or she is declared the winner of this round and may think of the next mystery pet. If the guess is incorrect, play continues in a similar manner. For added fun, see who can guess each animal with the fewest number of questions.
