RICKETTS THANKS THE NATIONAL GUARD Yesterday, at his daily coronavirus press briefing, Governor Pete Ricketts thanked the Nebraska National Guard for its versatile service to the state during the pandemic. Among other duties, the Guard has played a key role in packaging and distributing supplies to food banks, distributing per-sonal protective equipment (PPE), and supporting the operation of mobile testing locations. Major General Daryl L. Bohac, the Adjutant General of the Nebraska National Guard, joined the Governor for today’s press con-ference. He overviewed the various missions the National Guard has un-dertaken to aid the State’s coronavirus response. Gen. Bohac said nearly 400 Airmen and Soldiers are actively serving today. That number tops the peak from last year’s flood response (329). These are all volunteers. We’ve not ordered anyone into duty. They have six mobile testing teams while the typical team has six medics, data entry folks, decontamination specialists, and others giving oversight. One mobile testing team, com-posed of about 18 people, can do 600 swabs per day in a walk-through operation and 300 swabs in a day for drive-thru testing. Currently, they have testing teams in Columbus, Crete, Grand Island, Holdrege, McCook, and Schuyler.
LIMITED RV CAMPING Nebraskans may begin enjoying recreational vehicle camping by reserva-tion only at select state park areas starting May 20, according to the Ne-braska Game and Parks Commission. Limited RV camping will be available at select park areas where social distancing and group-size recommenda-tions can be maintained to help ensure compliance with the state's public health directives amid the COVID-19 health situation. A list of the avail-able park areas will be posted on the agency website and updated as additional areas are established. "We sympathize with those who have been affected by this virus and the rippling effects of trying to contain it, and we appreciate the patience and understanding of people who are passionate about camping," Game and Parks Director Jim Douglas said. "We are pleased to now be able to allow limited RV camping, and we look forward to restoring more opportunities when the time is appropriate and as conditions allow. Our priority remains to protect the health and well-being of all Nebraskans." Game and Parks retains the ability to scale back the number of campsites if social practices are not followed or if public health officials determine there is an increased incidence of virus in any region of the state. Park grounds remain open to the public for day use and a park entry permit is needed for each vehicle entering a park. State designated beach and swimming areas will be closed until further notice, in part due to recent incidents involving large gatherings and lack of social distancing on beach areas at multiple state park venues. Other waterfront areas will remain open for day use and fishing as long as social distancing and the 10-person gathering size limit are maintained.
RECORD NUMBER OF VOTERS Nebraska voters – vote – despite COVID-19. “A record number of Ne-braska voters requested an early ballot this year amid a COVID-19 event,” stated Secretary of State Bob Evnen. “To date, 63.7% of those who requested early ballots have returned their ballots and 47.8% of the voters in the all-mail-in counties have returned their ballots as well.” Voters have two options to choose from when returning an early ballot. Sign and mail it. Sign and drop it off at the voter drop box located in your county. (Recommended) All early ballots need to be returned by the close of polls Tuesday, May 12, using one of the two options listed above. For more in-formation visit https://sos.nebraska.gov/.

SPORTS Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team coach Garrett Nokes has
been named Coach of the Year for the Great Plains Region. The
coaches and captains from every team in the region vote for a Coach
of the Year at the end of every season. It’s the first time Nokes has
received the recognition. “It’s a big honor,” Nokes said. “One of the
things I love about my job is that coaching in this region is pretty
unique. Our environment is the most positive environment I’ve ever
been around in college rodeo. All of the coaches want their kids to
win, but there’s not a coach in the region that won’t help a kid from
another school if asked.” He said that type of cooperation has led to
a phenomenal atmosphere where student-athletes can develop their
skills and advance to the next level. “We just want the competition to
be the toughest it can be, and that’s something that’s felt by every
coach in the region,” Nokes said. It’s important to him that his own
team develops a strong work ethic and that members take away as
much from outside the arena as inside.
Nearly every senior from Nebraska’s 2020 baseball team appears
set to make another go of it next spring. More than seven weeks
after the coronavirus pandemic halted the Huskers’ season at 15
games, coach Will Bolt said Monday that five of the program’s six
seniors will take advantage of the blanket waiver afforded to any
spring-sport athletes who wish to retain their eligibility. Four of the
returning seniors were regulars in the 2020 lineup center fielder Joe
Acker, left fielder Mojo Hagge, catcher Luke Roskam and first base-
man Ty Roseberry. The other, left-hander Gareth Stroh, opened as
the Friday night starting pitcher and began a pair of February con-
tests before injuring his throwing elbow. Next season will be Stroh’s
sixth in college baseball after sitting out 2019 as a Purdue transfer.
