During the invasion of Iraqin 2003, the U.S. deployed only a handful; now, it has more than 7,000. Besides the U.S., over 40 othernations are now building or buying these increasingly lethal and cost-effective weapons, and it's only amatter of time before a terrorist group turns the technology against Western targets. The latest Predatorscan track 12 targets at once, trace footprints back to their source and even recognize individual faces.Yesterday's soldiers and pilots put their lives on the line but today, a UAV pilot can "fly" a mission inAfghanistan remotely from a base in Nevada. As one pilot said, after carrying out a strike, "within 20minutes you can be sitting at the dinner table talking to your kids." That new ability has already savedhundreds if not thousands of U.S. service lives but may make military strikes a more tempting, seeminglyrisk-free option. (Next Air 01/08/15 02:00am)

9:00pm American Masters - Ricky Jay: Deceptive PracticeRicky Jay: Deceptive Practice is a journey into the world of modern magic and the small circle ofeccentrics who were its perpetual devotees. At its center is the multi-talented Ricky Jay, a best- sellingauthor and historian, an acclaimed actor, a leading collector of antiquarian books and artifacts, but aboveall a conjurer capable of creating a profound sense of wonder and disbelief in even the most jaded ofaudiences. Told largely in Jay's own voice, Deceptive Practice traces the story of his achievements, fromhis early apprenticeship, beginning at age four, with his grandfather Max Katz, an accomplished amateurmagician, as well as Al Flosso, Slydini, Cardini, Francis Carlyle, and Roy Benson, all of whom wereamong the best magicians of the 20th century. The film weaves together performance footage from hisone-man shows and classic TV appearances, and also includes friends and collaborators such as SteveMartin (who joins him in a hilarious turn on a '70s vintage Dinah Shore TV show) and David Mamet, who says of Jay: "He's devoted to that theater that he alone sees. He has the ideal of magic in his mind towhich he's devoted his life: to teaching it, to performing it, to perfecting it, to researching it." (Next Air 01/24/15 02:00am)

9:00pm Nova - Sinkholes - Buried AliveIn Tampa, Florida, in February 2013, a giant hole in the ground opened up and swallowed half a house, killing 36 year-old Jeffrey Bush as he slept in his bedroom. A month later, a golfer in Illinois survived an18-foot fall when the 14th hole caved in beneath his feet. Both were victims of sinkholes-a notoriousworldwide hazard that lurks wherever limestone bedrock is found. When carbon dioxide dissolves inrainwater, it forms a weak acid that attacks the soft limestone, riddling it like Swiss cheese with hiddenunderground rivers, caves and hollows. While this process of erosion takes millions of years, the fragileroof of a cavern near the surface can collapse in an eye blink, with little or no advance warning.Sinkholes can range from a few meters across to one in Egypt that measures 50 x 75 miles, and a Chinesehole nearly half a mile deep. Filled with compelling eyewitness video of collapsing sinkholes andauthoritative science from expert geologists, NOVA investigates what it's like to have your world vanishbeneath your feet. Franklin was aware of the bodies in hisbasement, but they weren't the victims of violent acts. Rather, they were used for the purposes of anillegal anatomy school that helped shaped modern medicine.
