Thursday, February 13, 2020 Sports The Coffey County Republican 13 Burlington Wrestling Club Mat Cats compete in Ottawa tournament OTTAWA — The Burling- ton Wrestling Club Mat Cats competed in the Ottawa Mat Masters Open/Novice/Girls tournament at Ottawa Sun- day, Feb. 9. The Mat Cats had 39 wres- tlers participate in the tour- nament. Of those, 17 earned top-three finishes in their respective brackets and an- other seven were top-five fin- ishers. Burlington wrestlers won 70 matches and lost 64, recording a 52.24 percent win- ning percentage on the day. Additionally, one wrestler, Gregory Watts, had the fast- est technical fall of any wres- tler on the day. He achieved the technical fall in one min- ute 31 seconds. Capturing first place in their respective brackets were Alaina Mason, Cassus Slead, Bane Slead, Bowen Mc- Intosh and Kelly Buck Bringing home second place were Gregory Watts, Tate Clower, Dexter Birk, Max Ecton, Asa Crutchfield, Case Birk and Brody Kitt. Claiming third place were Kitana Pease, Tom Vu, Gavin Belcher, Tucker Noonan and Colt Baker. Earning fourth place were Archer Akins, Caleb Birk, Dalton Vanover, Jesse Milner and Isaiah Moss. Fifth-place finishers were Ryan Hoyt and Karson Bangs. Also wrestling tough were Emmett Lingenfelter, Brennan Buck, Luke Kelley, Bodie Ecton, Miles Birk, Ely- se Vu, Darman Slead, Brett Hinman, Lyla Buck, Marshall Wright, Lincoln Wright, Jake Leiser, Eli Grow, Ezra Crutch- field and Brody Reynolds. One Mat Cat, Isaiah Moss, also competed in the Battle of the Belt tournament at Mul- vane Saturday, Feb. 1. He did not place, going 1-2 on the day. HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING Burlington girls, boys JV compete in Burlingame Jamboree BHS wins inaugural girls’ league title BURLINGAME — The Bur- lington High School girls’ wrestlers and JV wrestlers competed in the Burlingame Jamboree Friday, Feb. 7, three days after the girls’ team made history by winning the first- ever Pioneer League team title in girls’ wrestling. Burlington had 21 wrestlers, seven girls and 14 boys, partic- ipate in the Burlingame Jam- boree. No team amassed more pins on the evening than Bur- lington. They, along with Em- poria, who had 23 wrestlers competing, finished with 22 pins. BHS also scored the most total match points of any team, with 52 points. Individually, Carlee Bro- yles had the most pins of any wrestler, with four. Catherine Rohrer finished with 23 total match points, the most of any wrestler except for Union- town’s Colt Eck, who had 28. Burlington wrestlers won 28 matches and lost 29, recording a 49.12 percent winning per- centage on the day. The girls’ team posted an 11-10 record and the JV boys a 17-19 record. Of the Burlington wrestlers, 11 boys and four girls earned top-three finishes. First-place finishers were M.J. Huff and Carlee Broyles for the girls and Owen Mc- Manus, Derek Jesse, Shalonn Wright and Wayne Rohrer for the JV. Second-place finishers were Matti Huff and Cath- erine Rohrer for the girls and Tristan Devening, Jaden Ma- jors and Sam Griffin for the JV. Third-place finishers were Chrissy Hall for the girls and Tremaine Boyle, Javier Ma- lumbres, Mitch Broyles and Daniel Bartley for the JV. Fourth-place finishers were Mikayla Meierhoff for the girls and Alex Edwards and Garreth Palmer for the JV. Kamron Clay was a fifth-place finisher for the girls. Tyler Kirkby wrestled tough for the JV boys but didn’t place. He wrestled Burlingame’s John Heckman, winning the first match and losing the second. Neither wrestler placed due to both being 1-1 and their third match being a double forfeit. Three days prior, the Burl- ington girls traveled to Prairie View High School in La Cygne and competed in the first-ever Pioneer League girls’ tour- nament, where they became the first-ever girls’ Pioneer League Champions. All of Burlington’s nine var- sity girls’ wrestlers competed in the tournament. Kamron Clay went 3-0. Matti Huff, M.J. Huff, Bryleigh Isch and Car- lee Broyles went 2-0. E’owynn Codney went 2-1, Chrissy Hall went 1-1 and Mikayla Meier- hoff and Catherine Rohrer went 0-2. The BHS girls will compete in the inaugural official girls’ regionals for all classifications Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14 and 15. They will compete in the east regional tournament at Paola, with action begin- ning at 1 p.m. Friday. The JV boys will conclude their season with the Burling- ton JV Invitational 9 a.m. Sat- urday, Feb. 15. The Wildcats came in 14th as a team with 61.5 points. Ahead of them, Chanute had 213.5 points, McPher- son 148.5, Derby 136, Bonner Springs 120, Salina Central 111, Mulvane 106, Valley Center 105.5, Andover 90.5, Andale 87, Winfield 81, Rose Hill 77.5 and Clay Center and Hutchinson 68 each. Individually, the Wildcats had two top-four finishers in a field that featured mul- tiple state-ranked wrestlers in every weight class from all four wrestling classifica- tions, 6A, 5A, 4A and 3-2-1A. Cael Johnson went 3-1 and placed second at 160 pounds, while T.T. Totty went 4-2 and claimed fourth place at 132 pounds. Damon Hoback went 2-2 and finished in the top eight. Caedon Berken- meier, Collin Birk and Brock Zimmerman finished in the top 12 in their respective brackets. Berkenmeier went 2-2 at 138 pounds, Birk went 2-2 at 145 pounds and Brock Zimmerman went 1-2 at 170 pounds. Burlington Wrestling Club Mat Cats compete in Ottawa tournament OTTAWA — The Burling-ton Wrestling Club Mat Cats competed in the Ottawa Mat Masters Open/Novice/Girls tournament at Ottawa Sun-day, Feb. 9. The Mat Cats had 39 wres-tlers participate in the tour-nament. Of those, 17 earned top-three finishes in their respective brackets and an-other seven were top-five fin-ishers. Burlington wrestlers won 70 matches and lost 64, recording a 52.24 percent win-ning percentage on the day. Additionally, one wrestler, Gregory Watts, had the fast-est technical fall of any wres-tler on the day. He achieved the technical fall in one min-ute 31 seconds. Capturing first place in their respective brackets were Alaina Mason, Cassus Slead, Bane Slead, Bowen Mc-Intosh and Kelly Buck Bringing home second place were Gregory Watts, Tate Clower, Dexter Birk, Max Ecton, Asa Crutchfield, Case Birk and Brody Kitt. Claiming third place were Kitana Pease, Tom Vu, Gavin Belcher, Tucker Noonan and Colt Baker. Earning fourth place were Archer Akins, Caleb Birk, Dalton Vanover, Jesse Milner and Isaiah Moss. Fifth-place finishers were Ryan Hoyt and Karson Bangs. Also wrestling tough were Emmett Lingenfelter, Brennan Buck, Luke Kelley,

Bodie Ecton, Miles Birk, Ely-se Vu, Darman Slead, Brett Hinman, Lyla Buck, Marshall Wright, Lincoln Wright, Jake Leiser, Eli Grow, Ezra Crutch-field and Brody Reynolds. Burlington girls, boys JV compete in Burlingame Jamboree

BHS wins inaugural girls’

league title BURLINGAME — The Bur-lington High School girls’ wrestlers and JV wrestlers competed in the Burlingame Jamboree Friday, Feb. 7, three days after the girls’ team made history by winning the first-ever Pioneer League team title in girls’ wrestling. Burlington had 21 wrestlers, seven girls and 14 boys, partic-ipate in the Burlingame Jam-boree. No team amassed more pins on the evening than Bur-lington. They, along with Em-poria, who had 23 wrestlers competing, finished with 22 pins. BHS also scored the most total match points of any team, with 52 points. Individually, Carlee Bro-yles had the most pins of any wrestler, with four. Catherine Rohrer finished with 23 total match points, the most of any wrestler except for Union-town’s Colt Eck, who had 28. Burlington wrestlers won 28 matches and lost 29, recording a 49.12 percent winning per-centage on the day. The girls’ team posted an 11-10 record and the JV boys a 17-19 record. Of the Burlington wrestlers, 11 boys and four girls earned top-three finishes. First-place finishers were M.J. Huff and Carlee Broyles for the girls and Owen Mc-Manus, Derek Jesse, Shalonn Wright and Wayne Rohrer for the JV. Second-place finishers were Matti Huff and Cath-erine Rohrer for the girls and Tristan Devening, Jaden Ma-jors and Sam Griffin for the JV. Third-place finishers were

Chrissy Hall for the girls and Tremaine Boyle, Javier Ma-lumbres, Mitch Broyles and Daniel Bartley for the JV. Fourth-place finishers were Mikayla Meierhoff for the girls and Alex Edwards and Garreth Palmer for the JV. Kamron Clay was a fifth-place finisher for the girls. Tyler Kirkby wrestled tough for the JV boys but didn’t place. He wrestled Burlingame’s John Heckman, winning the first match and losing the second. Neither wrestler placed due to both being 1-1 and their third match being a double forfeit. Three days prior, the Burl-ington girls traveled to Prairie View High School in La Cygne and competed in the first-ever Pioneer League girls’ tour-nament, where they became the first-ever girls’ Pioneer League Champions. All of Burlington’s nine var-sity girls’ wrestlers competed in the tournament. Kamron Clay went 3-0. Matti Huff, M.J. Huff, Bryleigh Isch and Car-lee Broyles went 2-0. E’owynn Codney went 2-1, Chrissy Hall went 1-1 and Mikayla Meier-hoff and Catherine Rohrer went 0-2. The BHS girls will compete in the inaugural official girls’ regionals for all classifications Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14 and 15. They will compete in the east regional tournament at Paola, with action begin-ning at 1 p.m. Friday. The JV boys will conclude their season with the Burling-ton JV Invitational 9 a.m. Sat-urday, Feb. 15.

Wildcats participate in tough Rose Hill Invite

ROSE HILL — The Burl-ington Wildcat varsity boys’ wrestling team traveled to Rose Hill to compete in a very competitive and tough Rose Hill Invitational Fri-day and Saturday, Feb. 7 and 8. The Wildcats came in 14th as a team with 61.5 points. Individually, the Wildcats had two top-four finishers in a field that featured mul-tiple state-ranked wrestlers in every weight class from all four wrestling classifica-tions, 6A, 5A, 4A and 3-2-1A. Cael Johnson went 3-1 and placed second at 160 pounds, while T.T. Totty went 4-2 and claimed fourth place at 132 pounds. Damon Hoback went 2-2 and finished in the top eight. Caedon Berken-meier, Collin Birk and Brock Zimmerman finished in the top 12 in their respective brackets. Berkenmeier went 2-2 at 138 pounds, Birk went 2-2 at 145 pounds and Brock Zimmerman went 1-2 at 170 pounds. Wrestling tough, Johnathon Williams went 1-2 at 126 pounds and Tucker Williams and Keegan Kuhl-mann went 0-2 at 106 and 285 pounds, respectively. The Wildcats will compete in the Pioneer League Tour-nament at Anderson Coun-ty High School in Garnett Thursday, Feb. 13. Matches will begin at 3:30 p.m.
