PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE Colo. -- What can an Air Force parent learn from a three and a half year old furry red monster with large white eyes and an orange nose? Well, you might just be surprised.

Elmo and his friends paid a special visit to Peterson AFB July 31, to talk about an issue affecting a large portion of military families, deployments and homecomings.

Discussing deployments can be difficult with a child of any age, especially a toddler. With a little help from Sesame Street and the USO, parents now have one more resource designed with them in mind when approach-ing the topic with their children.

The Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families is based on a workshop called, “Talk, Listen, Connect: Deployments, Homecomings, Changes.” It is an educa-tional outreach initiative that addresses the needs and concerns of today’s growing military families as they face higher deploy-ment rates.

Saturday’s show brought out Elmo, the Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch, Rosita and Zoe, all who appeared in two 25-minute performances at the base auditorium for free. The characters went into the audience several times to greet and meet children and par-ents as they helped their friend Elmo think of ways to overcome being sad because his father had to go away for work.

“We try to give (families) some concrete things - writing letters, telling stories, mak-ing music with their friends or talking on-

line,” said Lonnie Copper, tour manager for the show.

Along with the performance, families re-ceived free toys for children and information

packets for parents, which included a booklet and DVD set for parents and children to share together at home.

“We get to entertain and educate,” said

Mr. Cooper. “You get great smiles from the

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- To all of our fellow bikers: we lost a wingman last week. By all accounts, the motorcyclist was doing everything right and riding in a safe manner. Unfortunately, the rider lost control of the motorcycle and suffered a fatal in-jury when he hit a patch of loose gravel as he entered a downhill turn. The fact is, a mishap on a motorcycle is more severe than an auto mishap because the rider is much more exposed to the impact of the crash.

n According to Air Force Instruction 91-207, Traffic Safety Program, the Air Force has stringent rules regard-ing personal protection equipment to help our military and Air Force civilian personnel prevent and survive an accident.

n All military members must wear a helmet regardless of being on or off duty. The helmet must meet or exceed U.S. Department of Transportation standards and be properly fastened under the chin. All for good reason; ac-cording to the Colorado Department of Transportation, in 2009 over two thirds of the motorcyclists killed were not wearing or improperly wearing a helmet.

n Operators and passengers must wear eye protec-tion. Goggles, wrap-around glasses, or a full-face shield (properly attached to helmet) designed to meet or exceed American National Standards Institute Standard Z87.1

for impact and shatter resistance must be worn. A wind-shield does not constitute proper eye protection.

n Wearing a long sleeved shirt or jacket, long trousers, and full-fingered gloves are required. Gloves should be sturdy, non-slip type to permit a firm grip on the controls. Motorcycle jackets and pants constructed of abrasion resistant materials, to include impact absorbing padding, are strongly encouraged.

n Riders will wear sturdy, over the ankle, footwear that affords protection for the feet and ankles (durable athletic shoes that cover the ankles may be worn). Sandals, low quarter sneakers, and similar footwear will not be used.

n Motorcycle riders will wear a brightly colored outer upper garment during the day and a reflec-tive upper garment during the night. Outer upper garment shall be visible and not covered. Wearing a backpack is authorized if it has brightly colored/reflective properties.

n These rules apply to all military personnel riding a motorcycle on or off duty, and all civilians while riding on an Air Force installation.

What may sound like a laundry list is actually com-mon sense, because what can happen, given enough opportunities, will happen. Therefore, the more pro-tection we wear while riding a motorcycle, the greater chance we will survive a mishap.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE Colo. -- A few days ago, my4-year-old son, Phoenix, asked me what was going to happen to all of my money when I go to heaven. I think my wife had just told him that his dad would not buy him a candy factory, so money was obviously on this youngster’s mind.

I usually can’t answer most of Phoenix’s questions (e.g., What do clouds taste like? How much does a cloud cost?), but this one I knew I could nail -- because I am, in fact, a lawyer. So, I effortlessly responded, “Son, Dad’s will will take care of that.” In his 4-year-old dialect, Phoenix, just as ef-fortlessly, responded, “then, when will your ‘will’ buy me a candy factory?”

Just about then, my 7-month-old son be-gan to cry. Immediately, a pang of anxiety ripped through my legal skull -- I have a new baby, but I don’t have a new will. Foolishly, in the commotion, stress, and excitement of our pending permanent change of station, I had completely forgotten to amend my will to account for my new son. Now, I realize this is not the crime of the century. But here’s the thing: I’ve been briefing Airmen for 14 years on the importance of estate planning, on the importance of updating your will, on the importance of having all your legal affairs in order before you move, or before you deploy; and yet I had failed to heed my own words.

Now, clearly I have the inside track on

getting a will. I could just walk down the hall and one of my seven judge advocate generals would love to draft the document that determines where the boss’s money goes in the event of his untimely demise. But, in-stead of going directly to my JAGs, I decided to join the crowd and try out the new legal assistance website that was advertised in the paper a few weeks back. The new website is https://aflegalassistance.law.af.mil.

To be honest, I was a little skeptical the website might be just another “save-time-initiative” that did save time for the unit, but not for the frustrated customer that took on the work.

This is absolutely not the case with the legal assistance website. It saves you time.

By visiting the website at home, I had all the information I needed to completely fill out my will worksheet (e.g., relatives’ names, addresses, inventory of valuables). Most importantly, I was able to discuss

critical decisions about our assets and our children with my wife in the privacy of our home. After I completed the will worksheet, the website produced a ticket number that allowed an attorney in my office to pull up my confidential information and then draft and discuss my will with me.

If you are still not convinced that you need to visit this legal assistance website, here are five reasons to check it out:

1. You can print your own general or spe-cial power of attorney, and bring it in to get notarized during the duty day (not just legal assistance hours).

2. You can research legal topics like taxes, identity theft and deployment readiness.

3. You can prepare for your legal visit while you’re on temporary duty or out of the office.

4. You can take an online survey to rate how my attorneys are doing, so we can pro-vide you even better service.

5. You can get your son’s candy factory inheritance in writing.

To ensure that you are legally ready for your PCS, deployment, or for whatever comes your way; check out https://aflegalas-sistance.law.af.mil before visiting the legal office.

Legal assistance hours are: 8 to 9 a.m. Monday and Wednesday ; and,

1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday in Building 350, 2nd floor

Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs

WASHINGTON (AFNS) -- Seeking an endur-ing and distinctive way to reflect the Air Force’s cultural identity and adapt to changing missions, senior leaders have solicited feedback from Airmen to help develop potential mottos, officials said Aug. 2.

“The intent is to create a phrase that captures the spirit of the Air Force, is inspirational, and serves as an enduring rallying cry for Airmen, from Airmen,” said Air Force Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Carrol H. “Howie” Chandler.

General Chandler approached the Air Force Ad Council in February, said Lt. Col. Clark Groves, the Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs chief of opinion research and media assessment. The general directed the council to explore ways to gather Air Force-wide inputs to create a motto that distinctively captures what it means to be an Airman and to communicate what the Air Force represents.

“We’re an all-volunteer, expeditionary Air Force at war,” Colonel Groves said. “Even while we maintain a wartime tempo, we must continue to attract, recruit, retain, educate, develop and unify our force.”

Air Force officials expressed confidence that the nearly year-long process to gather input from Airmen will yield worthy candidate mottos reflect-ing a research-supported sense of their unique military service identity.

The input and research process will soon yield a list of 10 candidate mottos that will go to a “rack-and-stack” preference test in a survey sent to thou-sands of Airmen throughout the Air Force, Colonel Groves said. The commander of Air Education and Training Command will then present the final three selections at the upcoming CORONA host-ed by the Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., at the end of September.

“To be enduring, the motto must represent the essence of the Air Force culture,” Colonel Groves

said. “It must capture the Airman’s sense of what it means to be part of that culture, a sense of their Air Force identity. Mottos remind of us what we stand for and value as individuals, as a service, as families and as a nation.”

Colonel Groves made the distinction between temporary recruiting slogans and an official motto, which will be the service’s first.

“People may recall slogans such as ‘Aim High,’ ‘No One Comes Close,’ and ‘Cross Into the Blue’ seen in ad campaigns supporting recruiting ef-forts,” Colonel Groves said. “The Air Force motto, in contrast, is focused on building esprit-de-corps, and is meant to endure to future generations of Airmen.”

During a series of face-to-face focus groups held with hundreds of Airmen worldwide, many participants cited the Marine Corps’ mainstay “Semper Fi” as an example of a strong and endur-

ing expression of military identity. Air Force officials said their intent is not to

emulate another service, but to use the effective-ness and endurance of that motto’s perception as a baseline for this project’s goals.

Extensive feedback from Airmen collected via Web-based and face-to-face surveys have provided a path for developing an enduring motto, Colonel Groves said.

“Our main objective at the start of the process was to capture the pure, unfiltered perspective of our active-duty, Reserve and Guard forces on what it meant to them to be an Airman,” Colonel Groves said. “We’ve now collected vital inputs from thousands of Airmen as a baseline, and as we proceed, the Air Force is committed to an open process driven by that input.”

The final motto will be published following CORONA.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- On the rooftop of the 21st Space Wing Mission Support building, a team of environmental engineers poked around, took notes, snapped photos, opened control panels, and looked inside the giant air handlers.

The team conducted energy audits on several Peterson Air Force Base buildings in July, which included looking at all energy sources and recording notes. The team will write up their recommendations on how the base facilities can become more energy efficient.

“We will measure temperature, to try to get an idea of the con-ditions of the building -- checking for cold spots, hot spots, and seeing if there is an opportunity to rebalance,” said Wayne Roder, a member of the audit team from Geo-Marine, a Knoxville, Tenn. firm which offers resource management services. The firm was contracted by Air Force Space Command to audit energy use on its installations.

Half of Peterson’s buildings will be audited this year and half will be audited in 2012. Auditors are looking for ways energy is seeping out, being wasted and costing the Air Force money.

The goal of the audits is to identify areas that can be improved, come up with a list of priorities and submit proposed projects to the Air Force for funding, said Randy Pieper, 21st Civil Engineer Squadron resource efficiency manager.

“Energy is going to continue to get more expensive,” Mr. Pieper said. “Doing energy conservation projects today will save a lot of money in the long run.”

Auditors looked at outlets, lights, central control systems and boiler rooms. The audits are expected to include significant recommenda-tions: replace furnaces, install new windows; and upgrade the base heating and air conditioning systems. Some recommendations likely will include installing solar shades on the windows in the Mission Support building atrium, to reduce the heat in the room, which in turn would reduce the amount of energy needed to cool the area. Another expected recommendation will be to paint the rooftop of the Mission Support building white, to ref lect the heat. And yet another could include replacing the boilers in that building with high-efficiency condensing boilers, which use less fuel and can be as much as 10 to 12 percent more efficient.

Energy audits identify areas for savings

The audit team looked at the energy efficiency of several buildings on Peterson Air Force Base and will make recommendations on how the base can improve its energy efficiency as part of an Air Force-wide energy savings plan. The Air Force has set aside $250 million each year for the next four years for energy efficiency projects. (U.S. Air Force photo/Monica Mendoza) See Energy audits page 11

380th Air Expeditionary Wing Public Affairs

SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNS) -- Young girls often dream about what their perfect wedding will be like. They dream of the perfect dress, cake, ring and who their dashing groom will be.

Senior Airman Sheri Nolen spent her childhood in Denver more interested in playing in the dirt and run-ning around.

“I never really thought about a wedding when I was a kid.” she said. “I was too busy blowing things up and playing with Barbie dolls.”

As she got older, she thought a wedding on a cruise would be ideal. But, Airman Nolen was skeptical that she would ever find the right person with whom to spend her life.

Then she met Senior Airman Donald Nolen.Airman Donald Nolen is a communications navigation

maintainer in the KC-10 Extender and Airman Sheri Nolen is a crew chief on the same airframe.

Although both were assigned to the 380th Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Squadron here at the time of their marriage, the path to their meeting and marriage was an interesting one.

The two met at McGuire Air Force Base, N.J., in April 2008, and became fast friends. In October of that year, they started to see each other romantically.

Airman Nolen said she knew early on she had met the person she could spend her life with.

“His smile and his eyes are amazing,” she said. “He is always willing to help anybody in need. He will literally give you the shirt right off his back.”

Airmen Nolen was equally smitten with his future bride.

“She is the kindest and most amazing person I have ever met,” he said. “She has the most amazing energy, and I look forward to spending the rest of my life with her.”

In 2010, he started to plan out his proposal to his future bride. He thought of doing it adventurously while the two were skydiving.

Then, the needs of the Air Force changed their plans. In April, Airmen Nolen was given five days of notice that

she would be deploying to Southwest Asia. Fortunately for the couple, her future groom had a planned deployment to the same location in June.

The two Airmen quickly went to plan B and discussed options of how to get married.

After some research, the couple found out that they could do a double proxy marriage through the state of Montana. A double proxy marriage is one where two proxies stand in for the absent parties. Neither the bride nor the groom needs to be present for the ceremony. Montana is the only state in the U.S. that allows this

type of marriage. The marriage became official July 12.Airman Nolen said it was a unique experience for her.“We pretty much just emailed a couple of certificates,”

she said. “It really felt more like we were applying for credit cards than getting married.”

So the new couple would have some type of ceremony, their coworkers planned a wedding ceremony here Aug. 4.

The ceremony had a few touches that reminded the attendees of the fact that it was in a deployed location.

The bride had a train made out of Airman battle uniform material and the groom had a boutonniere made of pink tissue paper pinned to his uniform.

The couple was not going to get a honeymoon though, as the bride returned to McGuire AFB due to the end of her deployment here.

Airmen Nolen said that even though it has been a strange and twisting road to marriage, she wouldn’t change a thing.

“If I had the chance to do this differently, I would choose to do it the same way all over again,” she said.

Senior Airman Donald Nolen and Senior Airman Sheri Nolen walk down the aisle as husband and wife after their wedding ceremony Aug 4, 2010, at an air base in Southwest Asia. The Nolens are members of the 380th Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. They were married by proxy on July 12, 2010, through the state of Montana. (U.S. Air Force photo/Tech. 21st Aerospace Medicine Squadron

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Summer weather is here and many of us will participate in outdoor activities. What you might not realize is that body heat and the carbon dioxide, which we exhale, attracts insects such as mosquitoes.

Mosquito surveillance - the capture and testing of mosquitoes for disease -- is conducted between the months of May and August. Mosquitoes favorite time to breed is dusk and dawn. Mosquitoes can smell the CO2 we exhale from a distance of 100 feet away. Male mosquitoes only feed off of flower nectars and juices; but female mosquitoes feed on blood. Blood gives female mosquitoes nutrients to develop eggs.

Adult female mosquitoes lay their eggs in water, lakes, puddles, or an artificial water container such as a plastic bucket. Ways to minimize mosquitoes around your household are to simply drain out all buckets, plant holders or even un-used toys that can cause water to store and make ideal breeding sites.

One method that some folks use during BBQ’s to try to wipe out mosquitoes is a bug zapper. The ultraviolet light from zap-pers attracts all night-flying insects. Zappers can kill nearly 10,000 insects in a single evening. However, mosquitoes are not that attracted to ultraviolet light and only about 10 percent are actually eliminated by this machine.

Another method people try is insect repellent. Products wear off in approximately two to four hours and need to be reapplied. Repellents are effective only at short distances from the treated surface, so you may still see mosquitoes flying nearby.

According to the Center for Disease Control it is important always follow the recommendations appearing on the product label to include:

Use enough repellent to cover exposed skin or clothing. Don’t apply repellent to skin that is under clothing. Heavy application is not necessary to achieve protection.

Do not apply repellent to cuts, wounds, or irritated skin. After returning indoors, wash treated skin with soap and

water. (This may vary depending on the product. Check the label.)

Do not spray aerosol or pump products in enclosed areas.Do not spray aerosol or pump products directly to your A trap filled with mosquitoes caught in the base housing area at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, Aug. 14, 2008. Strategically placed mosquito mag-

nets around base capture, identify, count and send off mosquitoes to be tested for diseases. (U.S. Air Force photo by Airman 1st Class Jonathan Snyder)

“There have been a lot of advances in technology,” Mr. Pieper said. “It makes sense to put condensing boilers in there.” The audits are part of the 2009 Air Force-wide en-ergy savings plan, “Energy Solutions, Fueling the Mission,” released in December. The plan calls for the Air Force to reduce its energy costs, increase its use of renewable energy sources -- including using wind turbines and solar panels -- and change its culture or attitude about energy conservation.

Starting this year, the Air Force set aside $250 million in operations and maintenance dollars for each of the next four years to help installations meet the federal energy mandates - that is energy conservation, water conservation and renewable energy programs. The recommendations that come out of the Peterson AFB energy audits will help

the 21st CES prioritize its funding requests, Mr. Pieper said.

“If projects have a good return on their in-vestment they have a good chance of getting funded,” Mr. Pieper said.

Key energy goals include reducing facility energy by 30 percent; reducing potable water by 16 percent; increasing on-base renewable energy to three percent of all electricity; and increasing renewable energy to 10.5 percent of all electricity by 2015.

As the audit team walked through the build-ings, Mr. Pieper took his own notes.

“The 21st Space Wing utility budget was reduced significantly for fiscal year 2011,” Mr. Pieper said. “So, I’m looking for energy saving ideas that can be implemented quickly.”

kids, but also from the parents.”As one parent entered the auditorium she

exclaimed, “I love Elmo, I mean I’m here for the kids.”

Master Sgt. Don Russo, Air Force Space Command logistics, brought his wife and three children, who embraced the spirit of Sesame Street by wearing matching Elmo shirts, for the show. His son, six-year-old Nicholas, enjoyed every part of the perfor-mance and said he would do many of the things Elmo did with his dad to stay in-touch during his father’s next deployment.

“It’s a fantastic family event, and the price is right,” said Sergeant Russo. “We really en-joyed it.”

DVDs available at the performance includ-ed full-length shows for children to watch about Elmo and his family as he deals with his dad going away for work. It also shows other military families and their stories of

deployments and what they do to stay close together during periods of separation.

The “Talk, Listen, Connect” workshop also encourages parents to talk with their children and help them express their feelings when a parent deploys. What changes they can expect and what will stay the same. The program also addresses the sensitive issue of an injured parent.

As the ways in which the military ap-proaches war changes, so do the ways in which warriors stay in-touch. Now more than ever, servicemembers have far greater resources to stay close to loved ones while deployed.

Families play a vital role in the well-being of servicemembers and by facilitating healthy communication they build strong relation-ships they can take with them wherever their career may go.

Synthetic repellents tend to be more ef-fective and/or longer lasting than natural repellents. The CDC recommends using products that have been shown to work in scientific trials and that contain active ingredients which have been registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for use as insect repellents on skin or clothing. Products containing these ac-tive ingredients typically provide longer-lasting protection than others:

DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide)Picaridin (KBR 3023)Oil of lemon eucalyptus, a plant- based

repellent, is also registered with EPA.Public Health conducts annual mosquito

surveillance around the base. Peterson Air Force Base works closely with the El

Paso County and Colorado State Health Department. One method of surveillance Public Health uses to help minimize these nuisances is to place “mosquito magnets” around Peterson AFB. This surveillance is by far the most effective way to capture mosquitoes and test for diseases that can possibly harm you and your family. One disease found in El Paso County is West Nile Virus, which left untreated, can be fatal. Recent studies show there were no known cases of West Nile in 2009 for El Paso County.

Next time you are out and about having family fun outdoors, be aware of your sur-roundings. Ensure your family is prepared for the weather and use proper protective equipment to help reduce mosquito attrac-tion. If you have any further questions or health concerns, contact your local Public Health Office at 719-556-1225.

See clearly with proper monitor carefrom 21st Communications Squadron

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- The 21st Communications Squadron would like to help users with the following computer tip. We encourage users to follow weekly tips to further their computer knowledge. This week’s tip is on how to clean a monitor.

CRT monitors are the large, bulky

monitors with the hard glass screen and are very easy to clean. Apply water or a cleaning solution to the paper towel or cloth and wipe the screen. You can also use that same towel or cloth to clean the entire monitor case.

Liquid crystal display monitors are thin flat electronic visual displays that are more sensitive. If not cleaned properly, the risk of scratching or damaging the screen increases.

The same applies to LCD televisions. Try to avoid cleaning with paper towels, toilet paper or tissue paper, which could easily scratch the screen.

First turn the monitor off before cleaning. Next, apply LCD cleaning solution to a soft cloth. If you do not have a cleaning solution you can make your own using de-ionized or distilled water and vinegar or isopropyl alcohol. Tap water or mineral water may

leave white streaks on your screen, because of the dissolved salts.

Mix the vinegar or isopropyl alcohol in distilled water in a 1:1 ratio (½ distilled water and ½ vinegar or isopropyl alcohol). Then apply the solution to your cloth and gently wipe your screen in one direction from top to bottom. Avoid spraying the solution directly onto the screen. Lastly, wait for your screen to dry before turning it on.
