Today we take knowing the day the of the year for granted, but for our ancestors it was far more difficult. When did clocks start to have an affect on our lives? Does a pendulum clock actually work? How does toothed wheels help keep time? Who has the largest clock in the world today? NOTE: Take a photo of your unique clock and bring it along to show Rob! He will tell you if it is a true antique. 24 th October – DON BROCK Lieutenant William Dawes (1762–1846). Hear noted Historian tell us the story of Astronomer William Dawes who volunteered for service with the First Fleet. He was attached to the Marines on board the Sirius and supplied with astronomical books and instruments at the recommendation of Astronomer Royal, Reverend Dr Nevil Maskelyne. In Sydney Cove he was employed on shore from March 1788. He built an observatory at Dawes Point and also worked as engineer and surveyor. He was part of Philip Gidley King's party sent to welcome the French expedition of La Perouse after their arrival in Botany Bay. Dawes point was named after him. See the Jacaranda trees out in bloom and hear the Harbour commentary from the Professionals! Numbers must be finalised by 17 th October for catering. Cost $65.00 Includes delicious seafood buffet lunch & a full range of non - seafood, vegetarian dishes, dessert & cheeses, tea and coffee included! Bar open at your expense. Travel to Circular Quay by train or join us at Rydalmere to go by ferry. We can arrange transport from Carlingford Court Dep Rydalmere Wharf 9.55am Arr Circular Quay 11.10am Cruise departs Circular Quay – Wharf No 6, 12:30pm returns 2.15pm Ferry home Wharf 5 at 3.00pm Arr at Rydalmere 4.15pm

21st NOVEMBER – THE LETTERS OF RACHEL HENING PAUL STORM - President Willoughby Historical Society Rachel Hening, letter-writer, was born on 29 April 1826, Bristol, England, the eldest child of Rev. Charles Wansbrough Henning and his wife Rachel Lydia. Her mother's death in 1845 left Rachel responsible for her three sisters (Annie, Amy and Etta) and only brother, Biddulph. Rachel's letters are dated from1853 until 1882, were never intended for publication and were mostly addressed to her sisters Etta and Amy. This is her story and their lives from England to rural Australia.
