LITERACY AND NUMERACY WORKSHOP
NUMERACY – WHAT DO WE DO AT SCHOOL?
• Areas of maths – Number, Using and Applying, Space, Shape and Measures, Data Handling
• Progression from Reception, Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2
• Assessment across all areas
• Problem Solving – applying skills and developing thinking, logic, reasoning
• Mental maths skills each day
• Mathletics to support
NUMERACY - RESOURCESStarting very practical in Reception / Year 1• Numicon
• Counting objects
• Multilink / Unifix cubes
Moving towards more abstract ideas in Year 1 / 2• Recording using +, - and =
• Numberlines
• Hundred squares
• Blank numberlines
Still keep using physical resources throughout the school, for example fractions and division or time and shape
NUMICON
• Now used in Island pre-schools
• Number recognition, feely bags, baseboards
• Number lines in the classrooms
• Addition and subtraction
• Balance buckets
• Place value
MENTAL MATHS
• Not just about times tables - we don’t usually use the ‘x’ sign or multiplication grids until Year 2
• Counting in 2s, 10s and 5s
• Counting up and back in 1s
• Number bonds to 10 / 20 /100
• Finding 1 more / 1 less and 10 more / 10 less
• Mental addition and subtraction – counting on from a number
NUMERACY – HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT?
• Numeracy booklet
• Maths in every day tasks, counting out, sharing, counting in groups of 2 and 10, telling the time (analogue clocks)
• Check with the teacher how they explain a method
• Maths homework in Years 1 and 2 – will know the objective for the week
• Mathletics – used to support learning in the classroom
• Be a Maths Volunteer!
