CEDDERS

As you may or not know, Cedric “Cedders” Jones has been battling illness recently but is very upbeat and positive. He has just finished his course of treatment and will be back in his white coat and umpiring this weekend! Cedric is booked in for surgery in June, which will be followed by a couple of months rest.

Cedric is one of life’s good guys and we wish him a very speedy recovery from his surgery!

THE JUNIOR SECTION

As you can see from the photograph at the beginning of the newsletter, the Green was, once again, “flooded” with youngsters on Sunday. Many age groups are completely sold out and Simon Rider and his team have their work cut out managing the hoards! We are trying to have a more complete round up of the Junior Section, including upcoming events, reports and pictures. These are starting to come in and there are a few reports below:

U15 Cup: The squad had another impressive victory in the first of the u15 matches for the season in the first

round of the WSYCL Cup versus Bagshot last night. Captain James Derham “conceded” the toss and allowed Bagshot to bat first given they were still awaiting the arrival of some of their players. Joe Jeans continued his good form from Sunday and had a double wicket maiden in the first over (total stats 4 overs 19/2), and continued great bowling from Josh Oram (3 overs 1/8) well supported by Charlie Wiltshire (2 overs 1/7) and Ollie Vargo meant wickets were taken regularly through the innings, including some excellent fielding by the team including a great catch by James Derham off his own bowling. Despite this, one of their batsmen dug in and played an excellent innings before falling to Oscar Spunner for 42 runs meaning they got to 103 all out in the 17th over and what looked like a very gettable total.

Peter Cole (30) and James Derham got the team off to an excellent start, followed up by a very solid knock by Finn Livingstone (30 not out) and James Hextall (25 not out) meant we got the total of 104/2 wickets in the 16th over and an excellent start to the Cup competition! The second round will be against Leatherhead on 23 May. Many thanks to Matt Wiltshire for scoring the game.

U14 league: The squad has got off to a good start against Chertsey today in the u14 league. Joe Jeans lost the

toss and Chertsey elected to bat. They were immediately under pressure from some fast and accurate bowling by Oscar Spunner (4 overs 1/7) and Joe Jeans (4 overs 1/17) and they were 12/1 after the first four overs and not allowed to get into a scoring rhythm. Our spin bowlers also had them tied in knots with Barney Gray (1/9 off three) and Josh Oram (2/6 off three), and Charlie Wiltshire also having a good spell (1/11 off three). Two great run outs by the fielders and tidy bowling throughout meant they only got to 85/8 and what looked like a gettable target.

Our batters got off to a reasonable start, however we lost two quick wickets in the sixth over and Weybridge were 34/4 after nine overs with the WASP very much in Chertsey’s favour. Jordan Mangold (coming in at 3) steadied the batting and ended 27 not out supported well by Oliver Cole on six not out, meant Weybridge won by six wickets with three overs to spare and a great start to the season. Many thanks to Mike Vallis for scoring and Steve Gray for umpiring.

U13s: Last Thursday, we came up against Epsom CC (at their ground) in the first round of the County Cup. Epsom

batted first and we took to the field with only 8 players for the first 5 overs, due to a number of us having difficulty with traffic in getting to the ground, but despite this I thought that we did very well to bowl Epsom out on the last ball of the 20th over for 116. Mackenzie bowled very well, and got rid of their very dangerous opener with an absolute beauty of a delivery, and he was well supported by Ollie Jansen’s leg spin and Toby Shattock’s medium pace. Our fielding was enthusiastic and we let very little through, with only one very difficult chance being put down. Will Hextall did very well behind the stumps, and both of his stumpings off Ollie were smartly taken (and thanks to Cole who took the wicket keeping gloves for the first 5 overs, despite having never kept before – as he enthusiastically told me as we took the field to bowl!). We started off cautiously in our pursuit of the win, with Will and Luca Richards playing sensibly, before Luca holed out to mid-on and Manny then had the misfortune to be on the receiving end of my first LBW decision in 2 years! When we lost Will, Mackenzie came in and batted very maturely, but unfortunately no one else could really get going in support and we ended up well short on 88 for 5 at the end of our 20 overs. Although we certainly had the worst of the conditions, with the last 10 overs of our innings being played in the increasing gloom, Epsom put in a very disciplined bowling performance and were worthy winners.

I felt that we could identify 2 areas for improvement, being (i) we need to bowl a more disciplined line and length and give away fewer extras (I don’t have the scorebook in front of me but recall that we gave away more than 40 runs in extras) and (ii) we need to learn to take those quick singles, especially where we are struggling to find the boundary and need to keep the score moving – I just felt that we didn’t really put their fielders under any pressure at critical stages. I said to the team afterwards that if we learn our lessons from the defeat, and make a marked improvement in these 2 areas, there is no reason that we can’t reverse the result when we come up against Epsom in the League at home on Thursday.

I was also particularly proud of the spirit that our players played the match in, and the way that they conducted themselves in the face of some pretty aggressive verbals from the other side on the field – in fact, Epsom’s coach congratulated me on it after the match! While we may not necessarily feel that way that the opposition fielders carried on is the way that the game should be played, the players will come up against this at times throughout their cricketing careers and need to learn how to cope – and let their cricket do the talking!

THE SENIOR SECTION

The Club’s “Little Men” came up with some pretty big scores over the weekend! Harry Cripps scored a magnificent, well constructed Century against Normandy in the League, on Saturday. Joel Pope followed it up with an amazing Century against Ashtead, in the Cup on Sunday, that had the crowd going wild! Different styles but the same result! TON UP!!

Page 6: Thursday 12th May 2016 - Weybridge Cricket Clubweybridgecc.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/NEW... · travelled to Ottershaw for their game against Purley with only 10 men. A good

A fantastic weekend for the 1st XI, with a League and Cup Double, was tempered by losses for the 2s, 3s and 4s.

Sheldon’s 4th XI suffered the usual early season problem of poor availability and they travelled to Ottershaw for their game against Purley with only 10 men. A good performance in the field restricted Purley to 167, with Paddy Kenney taking 3-23 off 9 overs! The major issue for the club this season is a lack of batting and so it proved with WCC scoring only 128 in reply but with some glimmers of light at the end of the tunnel. Gihan Mallawaarachchi (easy for you to say!) top scored with 30 and skipper Sheldon chipped in with 23. 2 points.

It was the same story for the 3s and 2s. Old Ruts scored 175 all out with Andy Pope taking 4-11 of 6.1 overs! Wothers got 20 and Andy Pope 24 in a reply that amassed only 108. 3 points.

Arnie’s dreams of another title got off to a rocky start, as well. All things were going to plan as Normandy were bowled out for 143, with Saeed Ahmed taking 3-22. Another WCC batting display was under par and the 2s were out for 72, with only Tim Cross managing anything of note, with 21 runs. 3 points.

The 1s, on the other hand, had a great weekend. Andy Bell’s men were buoyed by the arrival of Dolphins Superstar, Sarel “SJ” Erwee and confidence was high in the camp, not least because of the fantastic, newly painted changing rooms, featuring the “Success Wall”! Winning the toss and batting, WCC scored 336 in 50 overs with Crippsy getting his 115 in 158 patient balls. Ben Curran smashed 64 in a 121 opening stand and Sam Managei closed out the innings with a bludgeoned 54 in just 28 balls. In reply, Normandy were always up against it and they fell 84 runs short. Jack Winslade took 3 and HT and Brent Kay took 2 apiece. 20 points!

In the cup on Sunday, newly promoted Ashtead visited Weybridge, fresh from their narrow win over East Molesey in the League. Same toss, same outcome and WCC set about building another formidable total. A slowish start catapulted into life when Ollie Mills was joined by Joel Pope. Ollie scored a very cultured 85 but Popey’s 130 not out off 73 balls was a joy to behold. Reverse sweeps, Dilshans and some shots never before seen at WCC!

Ashtead faced the same task as Normandy and, although they did well, they were never going to chase 316 and Captain Mann and spin twin Franny Vainker sealed the deal with 7 wickets between them. Next up, Guildford at home on 29th May.

We have decided to try and play 72 holes of golf in 24 Hours. http://www.macmillan.org.uk/about-us/longest-day-golf.html

Tee'ing off on the 27th of July. For those that don't know 4 people playing a round of 18 holes would normally take 3 1/2 - 4 hours. We expect the 4 rounds to take around 16 Hours and about 20 miles (If we hit it straight).

We are still looking for a golf course to donate the round to us, so if anyone has a contact that may help us out please let us know. Please help us raise money and reach our £2000 target!!
