March 2018
Welcome
Welcome to the March edition of the Parklands newsletter.
This has been a busy month with our competition, workshop,
social event and field trip.
Lyn Haywood judged the LOW ANGLE competition, which
was held at the Temple Park Senior Citizens Centre. It was
good to see so many of our members there.
Lyn works as a photography teacher and was very thorough
with feedback. She later presented some of her work; a
collection of photographs predominantly created from images
projected on other sources such as trees and vegetation
around her garden.
The LOW ANGLE winning images are displayed later in this
newsletter.
Don’t miss this week’s workshop on Photographing
Animals - Thursday 22 March at 7.30pm
Additionally, we have a workshop Lightroom: From Raw to
Finished Image on Thursday 12 April.
Also you will find information about the Introduction to
Lightroom Series in May. Dates are in this newsletter and
further details to come soon.
Charlie gives us tips on improving your photography –
Tip 2 – Your Kit, and there are a few photos from recent
outings.
You will also find ideas of events around town and
surrounds.
Enjoy your month!

A Note from the President
Thanks to Gina for another outstanding newsletter. It’s a great road map for your photographic
life for the next few months.
It has been a strong start to the year, with excellent attendances (and terrific entries) at the
February and March Club nights. Well done for overcoming the geographical challenges of
finding Temple Park! The barefoot bowls was a lot of fun, with some surprising skills (in bowls
and/or competitive psychology) on display. The results will have to remain a mystery. The
photo walk on 18 March was a great success, as you will be able to see from the club
Facebook page.
As most of you know, the Club night on 8 March was preceded by a Special General Meeting
which voted unanimously to change the name of the Club to Moreland Camera
Club. Implementing the change involves a number of administrative steps, including notifying
Consumer Affairs Victoria, VAPS and our bank, among others, and then changing details on
the website, Facebook page, stationery etc. We will keep you posted as the process unfolds.
As part of the name change, we are hoping to get some publicity through the Moreland Leader
(now, of course, our local paper) centring on the name change and the Introduction to
Lightroom Course described in the newsletter. The Course will be free to members, and the
fee to non-members will include an annual membership. If you know anybody who is
interested, do encourage them to take advantage of this opportunity. Again, we will keep you
posted as planning develops.
Best wishes to all
Phil Crennan
VAPS Convention 2018
The Club has put in its full allocation of entries to the VAPS Statewide Interclub competition,
including 15 digital and 15 print images. Thanks to all those who contributed - it’s an
impressive collection.
The results will be announced, and all print entries exhibited, at the VAPS annual
convention. This will be held at the Deakin University Campus in Warrnambool over the
weekend of 25-27 May. As well as the exhibition, there will be some excellent speakers and
workshops at the Convention, including on photography in the Arctic, light painting, model
shooting and lighting and more. For further information, go to the VAPS website -
www.vaps.org.au. The opening page of the VAPS website has a link to the Convention details.

Some tips on how to improve your photography
Tip 2- Your kit
Be prepared - carry as much in your kit as you are willing and able
What to bring when out shooting is often determined by a number of factors. Obviously, the nature of your shoot is a major consideration. Are you driving or catching public transport? If you are driving and are able to park close by, you can afford to take everything including the kitchen sink. If there is walking or even cycling involved you will need to be more considerate about what you can carry.
I have 3 different sized backpacks and will often swap my gear between them depending on these factors. Often, when driving and will be away for an extended period, I will bring all 3 back packs in my car and just move stuff from one bag to another depending on the circumstance.
Considerations when packing your kit
- The type of photography – birding, landscape, architecture, street, long exposure
- Mode of transport
- How much walking, cycling is involved and what is the terrain
- Duration of your outing – a couple of hours, all day, overnight, or longer
Essentials for all occasions
- Most obviously, your camera / cameras
- Lenses - Whether you bring one lens or more, think about what you will need for your shoot
- Spare battery / batteries – Not just for your camera but also for your remote control or other equipment
- Cleaning cloth and some lens cleaning fluid
- Camera strap / sling
- Operating manual
Other equipment depending on the circumstances
- Lighting equipment – Speedlight, triggers, light stands, etc.
- Tripod / Monopod
- Torch
- Filters
- Wireless or cable remote
- Camera’s battery charger
- Cable to connect your camera to laptop or other device for downloading of images
- Portable HDD for storage of images
- Spare memory cards
IDEALLY, YOUR KIT BAG HAS ALL THE EQUIPMENT AND ACCESSORIES YOU WILL NEED FOR MOST OF YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES SO ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PICK IT UP KNOWING WITH CONFIDENCE THAT WHAT YOU NEED WILL BE IN IT. HAVE A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING AND EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE. THAT WAY, YOU ARE MORE LIKELY TO NOTICE IF SOMETHING IS MISSING.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST, MAKE SURE YOUR CAMERA AND OTHER EQUIPMENT BATTERIES ARE FULLY CHARGED AND READY TO GO.

Happenings this month….
Lawn Bowls Social event
Temple Park Senior Citizens Centre
Our first social event this year was at the Princes Park Lawn Bowls Club. Thanks to Steve for organising the booking for us. The competition was hotly contested with the girl’s team taking on the boys.
The girls took the early lead, winning the first section; however the boys dominated in the last few ends and won the competition overall.
Until next time!
Thank you to Peter Mollison for taking photos on the day
This month we held our first competition at the Temple Park Senior Citizens Centre. The venue is easy to find in Temple Park at 24 Gray Street Brunswick.
Meetings and competitions will also be held at the Coburg Library throughout this year; so make sure you check the Parklands website calendar and newsletter to keep up to date regarding which venue location the meetings are held.

Thank you to Charlie for organising and leading this City Walk which
covered locations such as along the south bank of the Yarra River,
Sandridge Bridge, Exhibition Building, Seafarers Bridge and Webb
Bridge; followed by a lovely dinner at the end of the day.
Thanks to Charlie and Nerissa for taking photos of our members out in the
