The First Sunday of Lent

Dear St. Clare Parishioners,

On the first Sunday of Lent, the Gospel reading in each Lectionary cycle is about Jesus' temptation in the

desert. This event in the life of Jesus is reported in each of the Synoptic Gospels - Matthew, Mark, and

Luke, but it is not found in John's Gospel.

This year we read Mark's account of this event. Compared to the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, the details

throughout Mark's narrative are sparse. This is evident in Mark's account of Jesus' temptation in the desert.

Mark tells us only that Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit and that for 40 days he was tempted by Satan.

The Gospels of Matthew and Luke explain that Jesus fasted while in the desert, that Satan presented him with

three temptations, and that Jesus refused each one, quoting Scripture. Only the Gospels of Matthew and Mark

report that angels ministered to Jesus at the end of his time in the desert.

As we pause for a moment...Jesus was tempted by Satan and definitely we are tempted by him all the time.

This is not a secret, the devil wants to destroy you, wants to divide you and so the will of God will be distorted

and not followed. Whenever you experience divisions, frustrations, misunderstanding, things are not making

sense or matching up, Stop and Look Up….it is the devil who is trampling God's will. You pray, fast and do

acts of mercy (charity work) and the devil will run away.

In each of the Synoptic Gospels, the temptation of Jesus follows his baptism by John the Baptist. In Mark's

Gospel, we are told that Jesus went into the desert immediately after his baptism, led by the Spirit. Jesus'

public ministry in Galilee begins after his temptation in the desert. Mark's Gospel makes a connection between

the arrest of John the Baptist and the beginning of Jesus' ministry. Jesus' preaching about the Kingdom of God

is in continuity with the preaching of John the Baptist, but it is also something new. As Jesus announces it, the

Kingdom of God is the beginning; the time of the fulfillment of God's promises is here.

The fact that Jesus spent 40 days in the desert is significant. This recalls the 40 years that the Israelites

wandered in the desert after being led from slavery in Egypt. The prophet Elijah also journeyed in the desert

for 40 days and nights, making his way to Horeb, the mountain of God, where he was also attended to by an

angel of the Lord. Remembering the significance of these events, we also set aside 40 days for the season of

Lent, for what; so we can be better prepared to receive and celebrate the Lord's Passion.

In Mark's Gospel, the desert marks beginning of Jesus' battle with Satan; the ultimate test will be in

Jesus’ final hours on the cross. You and I also must battle with the forces of evil and with the help of God

we will continue to stand firm. In a similar way, our Lenten observances are only a beginning, a preparation

for and a reinforcement of our ongoing struggle to resist the temptations we face in our lives. During Lent,

we are led by the Holy Spirit to remember the promises that we make at our Baptism in which we promised to

reject sin and to follow Jesus. Just as Jesus was ministered to by the angels, God also supports us in our

struggle against sin and temptation. We succeed and we are victorious because Jesus conquered sin once

and for all in his saving death on the Cross.

Have a Blessed Lent...Enjoy the Journey of Faith,

Fr René

Fast and Abstinence Fast and Abstinence are 2 common penances in the Church.

There are particular times when we practice a penance

together and we are obligated to fast and abstain. Other times,

we can practice fast and abstinence as a personal penance.

Abstinence means we do not eat meat. Ash Wednesday,

Good Friday and all the Fridays in Lent are days of

abstinence. This regulation begins at the age of 14.

Fasting means we eat only one full meal on the Fast day.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days when we fast. Two

other light meals are permitted, but eating between meals is not permitted. We are asked to fast from the age of 18 to 59.

By doing these and other penances we can realize interior

change of heart that is so necessary for all Christians.

Note: Pregnancy, ill health or heavy physical labor excuses

you from Fasting

EVANGELIZATION AND FAITH FORMATION - 9.4% “Paul, called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus … to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: Grace to you and peace from God our

Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 1

Lay leadership training, intercultural ministries, ministry with the deaf and persons with disabilities, marriage enrichment, adult faith formation, liturgical catechesis and other evangelization efforts, along with your gifts, kindle the fire of faith into a bright beacon for all to see.

You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men. So, brethren, in whatever state each was called, there let him remain with God.” 1 Corinthians 7:17-24

By your gift to the House of Charity, you can calm the fears of many and lift them up with kindness, compassion and life direction through programs like the Romero Center, Good Counsel Homes, Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center and other emergency relief services and programs as the needs arise.

Our goal here at St. Clare of Assisi Parish is $141,163.86.

We invite all parishioners to participate in this important effort. During Appeal
