WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE MORE REVENUE OR MORE PROFIT?

It’s been our experience that many business owners come to the end of a month with nothing or less than nothing to show for all their efforts. That is because their profits are bleeding into expenses. They spend as much or more than they make. They may have hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue but once the employees and other expenses are paid, there is little or nothing left. Business Owners (especially those without real-time accounting) may think they had an outstanding year and are surprised when their Accountant shows that they made little or no money.

Here are some questions I’d like you to consider:

• Are you placing a high priority on putting profit first in your business.

• Have you set a profit goal with clear targets?

• Is your expense management working for you?

• What are you going to do with your profits?

• Do you think you are doing okay but could do so much better?

You would be surprised how many businesses we have worked with that have never considered these questions. They have no roadmap and figure profit will just take care of itself. Guess what? These same businesses generally have little or no profit and are struggling to get by.

“PROFIT is not something to add on at the end, it is SOMETHING TO PLAN FOR IN THE BEGINNING”

HAVE YOU JUST BOUGHT YOURSELF A JOB?

You may have a business that is bringing in enough revenue to support your staff, other expenses and pay yourself a good salary. Year by year you never have a net profit but are still living a good life. You have a home, several cars and all the things you need and want. Maybe you have more freedom owning your business than if you were employed. Maybe you are happy with things just the way they are and have no desire to grow the business. You probably haven’t considered that you likely won’t have an interested buyer of your business when you are ready to retire because buyers want to see companies that have consistent profits year after year.

It’s been our experience:

• That many people that have just bought themselves a job are not happy. While they are doing well, they feel that they could be doing so much better but they just don’t know how to.

• Sometimes they even consider leaving their business because it would be easier and less risky to work for someone else.

• Often their family is encouraging them to become an employee again because then they could enjoy the security (or what they think is security) of being employed.

DO YOU OWN A BUSINESS, OR DO YOU OWN A HOBBY?

Many business owners never make a profit, not even enough to pay themselves but they have a business that they are passionate about. They took their hobby and turned it into a business. That’s all well and good if these people are genuinely happy and they don’t need income. Perhaps they have a spouse that takes care of all their needs. Unfortunately, many of these people are not happy at all. They are stressed because they have all the responsibilities of owning a business. They have committed to long term contracts; jeopardized their families financial future; and are generally understaffed. They work long hours, have no work-life balance, their family life suffers and they feel hopeless. Often we’ve seen they no longer enjoy their hobby but feel they have no choice but to carry on. Not only are they not earning income, they are usually draining their savings and they will never see a return on their investment.

HAVE YOU JUST BOUGHT YOURSELF A JOB?

WHY IS PROFIT SO IMPORTANT?

A. Without profit, your business will struggle to pay your employees, pay your rent, pay your suppliers, pay other expenses, and pay yourself.

B. It’s important to reinvest profit in your business in order to sustain and grow your business.

C. You want to be in a position to pay yourself a healthy dividend at the end of the year.

D. If you ever want to sell your business, a potential investor will be looking at the profit capabilities of your business.

E. Lenders want to see healthy financial statements in order to lend you more or even keep the current accommodations you have with them.

The customary way business owners look at profit is:

Revenue - Expenses = Profit

This mindset is all WRONG!!! You may disagree with that statement, in fact, we expect you would. After all, that’s the way most businesses have been taught to think. What happens is that your excess profits will end up being eaten up by current and new expenses.

There is a better way!

We challenge you to change your mindset and keep your profits. After all, when you keep doing things the same way, you will continually produce the same results.

LET US SHOW YOU ANOTHER WAY TO LOOK AT PROFIT:

Revenue - Profit = Expenses

By using this formula, you will know what you are spending on your expenses. You then need to get tough on your expense management. The goal is to keep your profits. You will have a much better chance of success using this methodology. The first step is to create a profit plan.

The value of a profit plan. Would you just get in your car and start driving without knowing the destination? Of course not, a profit plan is a roadmap to get where you desire to go.

There are many reasons to implement a plan, here are just a few:

• To give managers explicit financial goals and objectives.

• To help define specific performance metrics for employees.

• To help motivate key employees.

• To educate employees on the direction of the company and gain their participation.

Steps to create an effective profit plan.

A. Key managers and employees must be involved in the planning and development of the plan.

B. The analysis needs to be thorough and address all the company’s short and long-term issues.

C. The plan should anticipate future trends and changes in the company’s market environment.

D. You need to make provisions for changes when key assumptions become invalid.

About The Authors

Let me introduce ourselves. Len and Louise Motuzas are a team of business consultants. We grew our tech company from our tiny basement to the boardroom - creating millions of dollars in annual revenue and building trusted long-term relationships with some of the world’s biggest companies including Intel, Microsoft, Lenovo, Xerox and Samsung. So I know firsthand the challenges and ambitions of small business owners, how to overcome them and THRIVE!

And that’s exactly why we called our consultancy Thrive - because surviving isn’t enough. You deserve your thousands of hours of effort and stress to be rewarded. You deserve a thriving business with strong cash flow and a pipeline full of high-quality clients - and we specialize in helping business owners achieve this.

Twenty-five years ago we were living in Ontario when our jobs fell through. But rather than work for someone else, we decided to take the leap and start our own tech company. Through a mixture of talent, hard work, and a focus on the product, sales and strong relationships, it grew far beyond what we ever envisaged and became a multi-million dollar business. But after 17 years we asked ourselves “what’s next?”

Having built one amazing business from the ground up we strongly believed that all business owners deserved to flourish professionally and personally like we had. And rather than retire, we felt it was our calling to share all of our knowledge and experience and Thrive was born.

Thrive re-energizes businesses that have good bones, and sets them on a new path of prosperity, helping owners achieve sustained growth or plan their exit strategy to whatever new challenge life brings. Len and I pride ourselves on being strategic thinkers, masterful salespeople, savvy negotiators, and highly-skilled at business development. Sharing our winning strategies is at the core of what we do and we love seeing it make such a positive difference in our clients’ lives.
