Howling winds and stormy skies form the backdrop for the Witches’ Ride from Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel; Dvor ˇák’s The Noonday Witch; Tchaikovsky’s The Storm; Salome’s Dance of the Seven Veils by Richard Strauss, and music from Wicked. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Donations at door: $10 / $5 Students 29 Spektral Quartet SUN 3:00 PM | Fulton Recital Hall Schoenberg the Romantic It is telling to note that in his own era Brahms was often considered too progressive for the traditionalists, and too traditional for the progressives. One of his most vocal champions was Arnold Schoenberg, and thus Spektral Quartet presents Brahms’s turbulent String Quartet in C minor, Op. 59 No. 1, as the portal into Schoenberg’s first mature string quartet. Piano students will learn how to immediately apply these concepts to Classical improvisation. Arie Antiche for Singers and Guitar, with Victoria Holland, soprano, and Brandon Acker, guitar Saturday, November 11 3:00 PM | Fulton Recital Hall Master Teacher Victoria Holland conducts a class featuring solo singers from the UChicago Vocal Studies program. Using standard art song literature of the 17 th and 18 th centuries as the featured repertoire, Dr. Holland will lead singers in explorations to their accompanying instrument. The guitar offers a very different experience from the modern piano — one that can enhance the singer’s ability to conceive and maintain ideal resonance and sonoral possibilities. PianoForte Workshop with Dr. Les Tung Saturday, November 18 1:30 PM | Logan Center Penthouse Dr. Tung, praised by the American Record Guide as “stylistically informed and technically brilliant”, coaches pianists on Classical Period performance practice on his beautiful fortepiano.
