Dear Pharmacy Freshmen,
Let me take this opportunity to welcome you to the
Department of Pharmacy at the National University of
Singapore. As an introduction to life as a Pharmacy
undergraduate, your seniors have put together an exciting
and fun Freshmen Orientation Camp (FOC) to welcome you and help you settle
into the days ahead in the first semester of the coming new academic year. This
is one of the many traditions in the Department. Joining the FOC as a
participant is a chance for you to meet up with seniors and make new friends
from your class of Pharmacy students. FOC include many indoors and outdoors
activities; many of the games also have team building elements; this is to help
you foster good class spirits among your cohort. I hope in the next few days at
the camp, you will learn more about life in NUS, make lots of new friends and,
most importantly, have a terrific time. Enjoy!
Best wishes
Chui Wai Keung
Associate Professor and Head
Department of Pharmacy
Dear Pharmacy Freshmen,
First of all, let me congratulate you on your entry into the
Pharmacy course at NUS. Indeed, it is a course that brings
exciting challenges and unique experiences. New
friendships will be forged and I encourage you to broaden
your social circle. After all, these are your future
colleagues.
I want to challenge every Pharmacy freshman to make a positive difference for
someone every day. It is not an easy task, but it can be the smallest things in life
that make the biggest impact. Often, we are comfortable within our circles and
fail to expand our horizons. Getting to know your classmates, seniors as well as
faculty will be a good starting point. You can be assured that your seniors are
very willing to share their experiences about anything!
The coursework will be tough but I strongly believe that many of you will
overcome this with positivity in your hearts. Embrace the course with an attitude
of learning and inquiry. Set aside your reservations about how well you can do
and focus on how these skills will help to make you a better pharmacist,
researcher, or expert. You are privileged to be part of a Gradeless First-Year, so
seize this opportunity and enjoy learning for learning's sake!
Finally, I do encourage all of you to be active in Pharmacy student life. Everyone
is part of the NUS Pharmaceutical Society, which provides for the welfare and
activities to encourage the Pharmacy students to know more about the
Pharmacy profession and their peers. We are all very excited to welcome you to
our NUS 'Pharmily' so do look out for the host of activities lined up for you!
Best Regards,
Chia Ming Tjong (Mr.)
President
53rd NUS Pharmaceutical Society
Dear Class of 2018,
First, I would like you to stand up and wave and
cheer and be all excited about camp! I am sure you
will have a blast!
Now wait a second. I know, that is such a
cliché. You must be thinking every FOP director says
that before a camp. However in my case, the
foreword is far from asking you to do this and that. Instead, it reminds all of us
WHY we are here for FOC.
Perhaps it is timely to share a short, yet purposeful story:
A Father was reading a magazine and his little daughter every now and
then distracted him. To keep her busy, he tore one page on which was printed
the world map. He tore it into pieces and asked her to go to her room and put
them together to make the map again.
He was sure she would take the whole day to get it done. But the little one
came back within minutes with perfect map. When he asked how she could do
it so quickly, she said, “Oh…. Dad, there is a man’s face on the other side of the
paper... I made the face perfect to get the map right.”
This story struck me as an apt example because it highlights the
paramount of looking at things from different perspectives - the one and only
message I hope all freshmen will remember during FOC.
As you experience your five days of camp, see things from the
perspective of your seniors. Putting together Camp Threnodia is undoubtedly no
easy feat. I owe it to all your seniors in the FOP committee and their
commendable professionalism to assemble the events together. We have
challenged ourselves this year with a new direction and spearheaded
innumerable new initiatives; all in bid to bring you an unprecedented camp
experience that you can recollect together as a class even years down the
road. I urge all freshmen to show appreciation for the efforts that were invested
into Threnodia. The only way you can do so is to participate zealously in the
camp and by showing us that you truly enjoy your experience. Giving you a
memorable camp has always been at the core of our planning ever since FOP
committee started (that was nine months ago, even before you retrieved your
A-levels results or completed your national service). However, it is ultimately your
decision how much fun you want in these five days. There lies a limit as to how
much the seniors can provide you with through our deliberate planning. Instead,
your participation plays a pivotal role in crafting a memorable camp
experience and indubitably becomes our best reward.
Furthermore, look at things from different perspectives when it comes to
interacting with your fellow classmates. Inevitably, you will encounter people
from all walks of life. There will be some you find interesting and bond quickly
with; in contrary, there will also exist in your orientation groups those that you
perceive to be different from you. But be like the little daughter in the
aforementioned story. Look at people from a different perspective and search
for common grounds; you will perhaps be surprised that we are similar in one-
way or another after all. Heed this advice and I believe that your orientation
groups will strengthen during FOC and transforms into a group you depend on
heavily throughout your four years in the intensive Pharmacy curriculum.
I wish to emphasize once again that your FOC experience is dependent
on your participation. Exit your comfort zone and promise yourself the night
before you come for camp that you have will leave your reserved and bashful
self at home. Remind yourself also of why you joined FOC in the first place and
why we are here for camp. With the support of all seniors and freshmen, I
believe that Camp Threnodia will be one that others will strive to emulate years
down the road. We look forward to receiving you at the camp!
Be present in the moment, the only thing we have is now.

I remember clearly, the day that it started,
The ghastly return of our dearly departed.
A morbid reminder of something forgotten,
Dead and diminished, now living and rotten.
A once active volcano now becomes dormant,
Prepare yourselves for what is now fully foreign.
Learn fast to spend wisely,
Given in the bag are what you earned daringly.
The place is surrounded
So don't make a sound.
If you give the slightest whisper
Even more will come around
Yellow, white, and black pills are what you would chew,
When the dead bites and you fall terminally ill.
Watch your back, you'll lose vantage
The last thing you want is a supply shortage.
Do not think of finding somewhere to hide,
Lest the sooner you'll join their side.
Wherever you go, whatever you encounter,
I know you will conquer the nest, no matter their number.
You'll be fine I promise
As long as you follow the advice I'm giving.
Kill the dead, but fear the living.
-Dr. Landsteiner
