The basis of VEM compact drive are two components, therobust VEM grey cast iron motor and a drive electronic that isoptimised for motor operation. When thinking about the engi-neering design, the most importance was attached to a highvibration strength of the inverter and a sound design of thewhole drive unit.

Whereas the inverters of the design series M21...T will becooled by the ventilator of the motor, the inverters of thedesign series M21... possess a separate ventilation system.

The compact drives are available in all standard types of con-struction, similar to the standard motors. The high type ofprotection IP 54 (for compact drives M21…T the type of protection is IP 55 or higher as an option) enables operationeven under unfavourable ambient conditions.

VEM compact drives can be used in applications where vari-able motor speeds are necessary for optimising technologicalprocesses. In particular the change over of installations andmachines that were operated so far with constant speed isremarkably easy. The existing motor can be exchanged with-out any difficulty with a compact drive. Additional designmeasures or new cables are not necessary. The motor speedcan now be adjusted optimal to the requirements. The valueof the installation or the machine will be increased due to theimprovement of the technological processes and the additio-nal optimisation of the energy consumption.

There are other, manifold advantages in using compact drives. Not alone the operation and the handling, but also the projectplanning, acquisition, installation and start of operation of com-pact drives shows significant cost advantages compared toseparately operated components.

General advantages • no floor or wall space for switch cabinet necessary• high vibration strength because of solid total design• high type of protection (at least IP54) even for inverter

as standard

Reduction of labour time due to reduction of project planning activities • no project planning of an electric service cabinet• no inverter project planning • no project planning of output chokes, du/dt – or sine filters• no project planning of cables between inverter and motor • no testing of peak voltages and rates of voltage rising at

the motor terminal • PTC thermistor analysis as standard • integrated PID-controller as standard • serial communication with RS485, Profibus DP, as option• radio interference filter class A as standard (class B as option)

Saving of materials• no electric service cabinet for the inverter necessary • no special insulation because no invalid peak voltages

develop• no output chokes, du/dt - or sine filters• no control cable for PTC thermistor analysis• no need for screened motor cables (only unscreened

cables for electric supply connection is necessary)

Reduction of labour time because of simple installationand connection• no installation of inverter • no wiring between motor and inverter• confusion about inverter input and output not possible • EMC-compatible installation at the output of the inverter is

not necessary

Reduction of labour time due to easy start of operation• immediately operable drive • parameters of motor already adjusted at production • no wrong connection of motor cables (wrong direction of

rotation)• easy adjusting of parameters with the control panel directly

on the machine and therefore precise and fast adjustmentof inverter parameters to the technological process

Compact drives of series M21 ... T 0.55 to 7.5 kW(vector controlled design)

For this design variation the cooling of the inverter is integra-ted in the cooling system of the motor, that means the coo-ling will be done by the ventilator of the motor or if necessa-ry by an axially mounted forced-ventilation unit of the motor.Due to favourable motor connection of the inverter and thesmall dimensions, the mounting space of the standard asyn-chronous motor will be exceeded only slightly.

The special product advantages of this design variationare:• type of protection IP 55, IP 66 as option• easy to maintain due to pluggable electric connection

between motor and inverter, after loosening of the three orfour screws for mechanically fixing of the inverter on themotor, a fast separation of both components is possibleand therefore it is not necessary to exchange the completecompact drive in case of damage.

• variable pulse frequency, that can be adjusted up to 6 orrespectively 14 kHz, whereas the pulse frequency can belowered automatically to 2 kHz as protection of the inverteragainst warming.

The operation of the drive can be done with the terminal blockX101. The program Motion Control MCT 10 is available forserial communication via interface RS 485. More detail canbe found in the project planning manual for compact drivesM21 … T. In addition the inverter design version with PROFIBUS DPV1can be supplied with a baud rate of 3 MB or 12 MB.

Included in the additional offer for local and remote controland for drive parameterisation (for more details see projectplanning manual) are:

Set value potentiometer for installationin a screwed cable gland of the inverter.

LCP2 (Local Control Panel) for use aslocal control unit and at the same timecomplete interface for parameterisation, operation and control with severalpossibilities for fixed and removableconnection (IP 65 – female connector)at the inverter.

LOP (Local Operation Panel) withapprox. 2 m cable connection for useas digital potentiometer and start andstop button.

The inverter is fitted with a ventilation system that is inde-pendent of the motor.

The speed of the drive can be adjusted without external control panel in the standard design version (M version).

Comfortable means of operation are: • external unit for operation and change of parameters • serial interface RS 485 • Bus connections• customer modified interface

Remarkable is the variety of serial interfaces:• 8 digital inputs with free choice of parameters and

potential separation• 2 analogue inputs with free choice of parameters and

potential separation• 2 digital and analogue outputs each with free choice of

parameters and potential separation• 2 relays outputs with free choice of parameters
