The high-stepping dance team brings its traditional holiday show to public television. The extravaganza includes multiple Santas, childhood dreams and the Nutcracker, Santa’s workshop and the rag doll tap dance, all with precision dancing, special effects and

gorgeous costumes. Traditional fan favorites such as the “Living Nativity” scene and “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” have been in the show since its inception in 1933. It is the whee! factor, the sense of freedom, the three-dimensional travel, the changing scene and continual discoveries about the Idaho landscape — and the 100-year heritage. This is Flying Idaho. Seven years after the Wright Brothers’ first flight in 1903, Curtiss Pusher lifted off in front of the grandstand at the Lewiston-Clarkston Fair for Idaho’s first flight. Today a re-creation of that plane, built by Jim Otey and Dean Wilson from an old set of blue prints, flies over modern Lewiston.

“I have never flown anything like it,” says Otey, of the plane with three controls — throttle and foot-steering in the air, plus differential braking on the ground. “It was just simply a fun thing.” OUTDOOR IDAHO also visits a wilderness flying school, a man building his own plane, the Caldwell Airshow, a boutique Idaho aircraft shop that caters to owners of expensive planes, and other plane enthusiasts. There are also visits with veteran wilderness pilots, pilot lore, other vintage planes, and a dash of history about the nation’s first air mail delivery here in Idaho.


Ride river rapids through deep narrow canyons. Travel lonely plateaus on dirt roads. Gaze on endless stretches to the horizon. Visit ranchers, conservationists and recreationists who all crave and need wide open spaces. This is the Owyhee Initiative — a collaborative effort forged by the county, ranchers, the Shoshone-Paiute Tribe, ATV advocates, conservationists, wilderness seekers and many others. The plan, which became part of federal law in 2009, recognizes and includes multiple use with grazing areas, places for motorized

access, protection of Native American cultural heritage, and portions of formal Wilderness designation and Wild and Scenic rivers. “The Owyhee Canyon Lands is now able to be enjoyed and used by people from all different perspectives in the multiple use spectrum,” says Sen. Mike Crapo, who was involved throughout the eight years of crafting the initiative and sponsored it in Congress. The people who came together to collaborate, he says, “have literally created a model or a mold by which we can approach this kind of land- management decision making in the future.”

Entertainment Abounds

Join us Wednesday, December 1, and Saturday, December 4, for a host of entertainment specials that feature the top folk musicians from the 1950s and ’60s, two of the greatest blues guitarists together on one stage, and a musical show for the holidays. It begins on the evening of December 1 with JOHN SEBASTIAN PRESENTS: FOLK REWIND (7:00 p.m. MT/PT). Folk legend Sebastian, the former leader of The Lovin’ Spoonful, introduces a treasure trove of historical footage that has not been seen in more than four decades. Artists who are still appearing in concert today bring new performances to the stage. The show focuses on the greatest singers and songwriters of the classic 1950s and 1960s folk era. Highlights include a Pete Seeger and Judy Collins duet on Seeger’s iconic adaptation of “Turn, Turn, Turn”; Harry Belafonte’s hit “Jamaica Farewell”; Trini Lopez’s version of “If I Had a Hammer”; and Bobby Darin’s heartfelt “Simple Song of Freedom.” Among the folk groups represented in vintage footage are The Kingston Trio, The New Christy Minstrels, The Limeliters, The Serendipity Singers and The Brothers Four. In addition, The Highwaymen and The Rooftop Singers present their million-selling No. 1 hits “Michael” and “Walk Right In.” It is followed by CIRQUE DU SOLEIL —FLOWERS IN THE DESERT (9:00 p.m. MT/PT), an extraordinary entertainment experience, capturing the magic of Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas. For 25 years, Cirque du Soleil has captured the imaginations of 100 million spectators in more than 300 cities on five continents. Its original mixture of circus arts, theater, choreography, live music, imaginative costumes, technical innovations, and artistic vision continues to challenge and entertain. This special also provides behind the scenes

interviews and backstage footage that allow viewers to explore the creative process behind the performances. On December 4 ANDRE RIEU: IN WONDERLAND (7:00 p.m. MT/PT) presents the Dutch conductor performing in his homeland with his orchestra, choir and several world-famous soloists. Recorded at Holland’s Efteling, one of the world’s most beautiful fairy-tale theme parks, the show features performers such as Suzan Erens, Carmen Monarcha, Carla Maffioletti, Mirusia Louwerse and Brian Dickerson. The Platinum Tenors, soloists from the ballet of the Vienna State Opera, the International Dance Theatre, and the Berlin Folk Music Sparrows also perform. Next on the December 4 schedule is ALBERT KING WITH STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN IN SESSION (9:00 p.m. MT/PT), which features two of the greatest blues guitarists. In a 1983 performance legendary blues guitarist King, age 60 at the time, is joined by his disciple the late Vaughan, then age 29, on a Canadian soundstage for the live music TV series In Session. According to fans of both musicians, this special is not simply a television program; it’s a summit of two master musicians. It is also the only known recording of King and Vaughan performing together. It is followed by the holiday special CELTIC THUNDER CHRISTMAS (10:30 p.m. MT/PT), which features the Irish group singing holiday standards such as “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” “Let It Snow,” “Winter Wonderland” and “Silent Night” as well as a few specially written originals. Filmed in New York state in front of a live audience, the five singers bring together their affinity for a great popular song with outstanding showmanship and pay homage to cherished holiday favorites.

Owls are pretty amazing. They have special adaptations to help them survive. But there are also a lot of myths about these birds of prey. Can they really turn their heads all the way around? Do they only come out at night? Sharing their expertise with host Joan Cartan-Hansen are Barb Forderhase, education specialist from the Bureau of Land Management, and Vicki Runnoe, conservation education supervisor from the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.

From the Klezmatics, who share songs from their hit Hanukkah album, to gospel singer Joshua “The Prince” Nelson, who puts a new spin on “I Have a Little Dreidel,” the show offers a diverse and joyous look at the holiday. Singers Chloe, Lisa, Meav and Orla and violinist Mairead turn their high-energy talents to the holidays with CELTIC WOMAN: A CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION, 4:00/3:00 p.m. MT/PT at Dublin’s Helix Centre. They mix traditional Irish, contemporary and original songs to greet the season.

It takes a true calling to make faith a way of life. This four-hour documentary series follows the stories of seven young Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and Muslim Americans who are training for religious leadership. The film explores the forces that are drawing a new generation of young people to serve their communities and their faith and takes viewers into the unknown world of seminaries to reveal the real people “behind the robes.” Embarking on life paths that demand tremendous personal

sacrifice and commitment, these seminarians must uphold timeless truths in an era that values quick fixes and hot trends and face a public that challenges the very relevance of their mission. A new look at an old job, The Calling presents a fascinating look at how faith is lived today. The show’s producers follow their subjects from their first days of training, through years of study, and into their early practice as religious leaders.

Pico Iyer (December 9) is a former reporter for Time magazine and an author who recently completed a book on the Dalai Lama titled The Open Road. His writings have taken him to some of the most far-flung parts of the world, and he shares some of his travel tips. Strobe Talbott (December 16) is a former diplomat who discusses what he views as the most pressing international issue of today: global warming. He has written a book titled Fast Forward about the topic. He also talks with Franklin about his job as the director of the Brookings

Institution and his views on global governance. David Kennedy (December 23) is a Stanford professor emeritus who discusses his Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Great Depression, Freedom from Fear. He compares the financial crisis of that time to today and also discusses the role of the historian in commenting on current issues. Douglas Brinkley (December 30) is an award-winning historian who discusses his new book The Wilderness Warrior. Brinkley’s book examines the legacy of President Theodore Roosevelt, who set aside more than 230 million acres of federal land, including nearly 20 forests and two wildlife refuges in Idaho. Brinkley was in Boise in late October as a guest speaker for the Idaho Humanities Council. Antarctica, one of the coldest and most remote places on the planet, is a fascinating place that holds a global impact on our climate. Once thought to be locked in a solid deep freeze for the last 15 million years, it now appears Antarctica has melted and frozen again dozens of times during that period. Two specials on Idaho Public Television this month look at some of the scientific implications of this phenomenon and bring “The Seventh Continent” closer to home. Scientists say Antarctica is being heavily impacted by climate change. Temperatures have warmed along the Peninsula (the northernmost part of the continent’s mainland) faster than anywhere on Earth during the past 50 years. TERRA ANTARCTICA: REDISCOVERING THE SEVENTH CONTINENT (Tuesday, December 7, at 8:00/7:00 p.m. MT/PT) follows a six-week journey by sea kayak, sailboat, foot and small plane, to observe and record the changes that are occurring there as a result of this rapid warming trend. This National Geographic-sponsored exploration also examines Antarctica’s boom in tourism, even though it is covered in ice. It is, on average, the world least-populated, coldest, driest and windiest continent with the highest average elevation of all the continents. Then later this month NOVA presents Secrets Beneath the Ice (Tuesday, December 28, at 7:00/8:00 p.m. MT/PT; see it in HD at 6:00/5:00 p.m. MT/PT).

This film looks at how Antarctica’s climate past offers clues to what may happen to our warming planet. In 2002 a 200-meter-thick ice shelf the size of Manhattan collapsed into the ocean off the peninsula, shocking scientists and raising the alarming possibility that we may be heading toward an ice-free Antarctica — last seen a million years ago. That phenomenon would possibly raise world sea levels to dangerous heights. To gather crucial evidence to determine if this could really happen a drilling probe known as ANDRILL began. Drilling deep beneath the Antarctic ice, down through the sea and three-fourths of a mile into the seafloor, ANDRILL recovers rock cores that reveal intimate details of climate and fauna from a time in the distant past when the Earth was just a few degrees warmer than it is today. As researchers grapple with the harshest conditions on the planet, they discover astonishing new clues — not only about Antarctica’s past, but also the Earth’s future.

Several new prime-time shows feature the music of the season on Idaho Public Television this month. The new holiday specials begin with L.A. pianist exploded on the classical scene with a 1955 New York debut at age 22, heading from there to the Soviet Union and on to international stardom. In 1964, he devoted himself exclusively to recording, using complex technologies, including editing, manipulation and overdubbing to share his interior musical soundtrack. This documentary seeks to reconstruct his thoughts on music, art, society, love and life through his recordings, his writings, archival footage and photographs, and interviews with those who knew him best — his lover, his manager, his personal assistant and collaborators.


Classical music from the New York Philharmonic and classic rock ‘n’ roll from the Rolling Stones help ring in the new year on New Year’s Eve on Idaho Public Television. The evening of music begins with a LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER production, New York Philharmonic New Year’s Eve with Lang Lang (Friday, December 31, at 8:00 p.m. MT/PT; see it in HD at 6:30/5:30 p.m. MT/PT). Alan Gilbert, now in his second season as music director of the orchestra, conducts the all-Tchaikovsky program, which features pianist Lang Lang. The show includes Tchaikovsky’s magical second act of the Nutcracker, his “Polonaise” from Eugene Onegin, and “Piano Concerto No. 1.” Heralded as the “hottest artist on the classical music planet” by the New York Times, 28-year-old Lang Lang has played sold-out recitals and concerts in every major city in the world. He is the first Chinese pianist to be engaged by the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic and all the top American orchestras.

The New York Philharmonic concert is followed by ROLLING STONES: LIVE AT THE MAX (Friday, December 31, at 11 p.m. MT/PT). This 1991 concert film was shot in the IMAX format and was originally presented on IMAX screens. Filmed during a European leg of the band’s Steel Wheels tour, the Stones’ set emphasizes material from the late 1960s and early ’70s with such hits as “Tumbling Dice” and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” Other highlights include songs such as “Paint It Black,” “Rock and a Hard Place,” and a cheeky “It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Bassist Bill Wyman, still in the band at this phase, offers wit and an encyclopedic grasp of rhythm and blues history, while drummer Charlie Watts adds control and swing. (D)(HD) “Secrets Beneath the Ice” Scientists drill deep beneath the Antarctic ice, down through the sea and three-fourths of a mile into the seafloor, to recover rock cores that reveal intimate details of climate and fauna from a time in the distant past when the Earth was just a few degrees warmer than it is today. They are looking for clues in the past that might indicate what may happen to the warming planet.

9:00 Frontline(D)(HD) “Flying Cheap” This investigation looks at the safety of regional airlines, which now handle more than half of all scheduled domestic flights in the United States and are responsible for six recent fatal commercial airline accidents. Although a ticket may be through a major airline, the flight might be outsourced to a relatively obscure regional carrier, where pilot rules may be less rigid, pay is minimal and training lax.

10:00 Independent Lens(HD) “The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill” This surprise hit in movie theaters across the country now comes to public television with the story of Mark Bittner, a jobless but not irresponsible man who befriends a flock of feral and released parrots in San Francisco. The movie is respectful of both the birds and their caretaker in this portrait of a lesser-known side of urban life.

Shot on location in Turin (Italy), Berlin and Lon-don during the Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle Tour, their electrifying 15-song performance features such classics as “Satisfaction,” “Ruby Tuesday” and “Brown Sugar.” Among the more recent songs at the time of the tour are “Rock & a Hard Place” and “Start Me Up.”
