No More Fear (Jer. 1:6-8)

Perhaps you’ve encountered situations in

life that you didn’t feel prepared to tackle. Maybe

you’ve felt intimidated by expectations or

demands. You can probably empathize with

Jeremiah.

When God first explained to Jeremiah

that he was set apart before he was born “as a

prophet to the nations” (1:5), Jeremiah wasn’t

convinced. But, in Jeremiah’s own words, God

“reached out his hand, touched my mouth, and

said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth”

(v.9) As things were going from bad to worse in

Jerusalem, Jeremiah was to be yet another voice

for the Lord who continued to pursue and warn

his people.

Knowing God was with him, Jeremiah

proclaimed his unwelcome message about the

coming destruction of Jerusalem, about God’s

judgment for the people’s sins of idolatry and

pride. But Jeremiah also spoke another truth:

God’s mercy will never fail even toward the

nation that had forsaken him.

Speaking about our faith gets easier the

more often we do so.

Unity Is Tough!

Unity is a repetitive subject in the New Testament. Certainly, it is still a very

practical and applicable matter in the church today. In Ephesians chapter four, Paul,

being concerned with the “edifying of the body of Christ,” spoke of the “unity of the

faith” (4:11-13). He is describing a mutual maturing that is accomplished by a united

membership (4:13-15).

The goal being that we “all come” to this unified “knowledge” of “the faith” in

order to strive toward the “fullness of Christ” (4:13). This process requires mutual

effort, participation, and harmony. Paul explained this effort as being akin to a human

body that is “knit together,” and thus working in concert to accomplish the unifying goal

of edification (4:15). To state it simply; we are all in a family where the goal is to

lovingly help each other grow and mature.

We could also note that it requires qualified and competent leadership (4:11-

12), and a whole lot of “love” (4:15, 16). We could also observe that Paul never said it

would be easy. Earlier in the chapter he noted the need for “lowliness,”

“longsuffering,” “bearing with one another in love,” and “endeavoring to keep the

unity” (4:2-3). The idea behind “endeavoring” was to apply oneself with a certain zeal

or sense of urgency.

Unity is a monumental challenge. It’s incredibly hard not to get caught up in

differences of opinions or other various issues that divide us. I am convinced we are

more alike than different. I am convinced that we have more in common than we have

differences. However, the struggle for unity is real.

That struggle was part of first century church too. While they had so much in

common, they also had some differences (Rom. 14:1-23). It’s hard to set aside your

pride, ego, and judgmental nature, but it’s worth it! It’s a beautify thing (Ps. 133:1), and

it’s vital to our health and growth as a body of believers.
