The Resurrection of Our Lord Divine Service I

April 16, 2017 6:00am & 8:00 a.m.

AS WE GATHER Jesus lives! Death and the grave could not hold Him! Easter changes

everything! Here we see the guarantee that our sins have been forgiven and Satan

eternally defeated. In faith, we believe Christ’s resurrection ensures our own, and we hold

to the blessed assurance that all who have died in the Lord will rise on the Last Day. By

faith, we are able to look beyond this broken world and even beyond death and the grave

because of Christ’s empty tomb discovered early that first Easter Day. Thanks be to God,

who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPENING HYMN: “Jesus Christ is Risen Today” LSB 457

INVOCATION, CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION

The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.

P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen. P: Before we approach the Table of our Lord to receive Him in His victory for us, let us

confess our sins to God our Father.

C: With humble and sincere hearts, we acknowledge before You, O Lord, that we

are not the people we ought to be. We have sinned against You and against one

another in words and deeds and inaction. We confess these sins to You and plead

for Your mercy through the merits of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Forgive us,

renew us, and lead us by Your Spirit to amend our sinful lives.

P: Easter changes everything. It is the world’s new reality. Still, there are times when we

live as if Easter were only a wish. We live too often as if brokenness were the only

reality. We live as if the stone had not been rolled away.

C: Lord God, the Easter reality is all around us. And yet, in spite of the truth of the

resurrection, we so often live trapped in brokenness. We are defeated by Satan’s

temptations, deceived by the world’s false hope and lies, and worn down by the

battle again our own sinful flesh. Forgive us and renew us, Lord.

P: Easter declares the great truth: the victory over Satan, the world, and our own flesh

has been won. Jesus Christ who died for you has risen. Because of Jesus’ death and

resurrection, our enemies of sin and death have been eternally conquered. You are

forgiven from every failure and every sin. Because brokenness and death could not

hold Jesus, you are made whole. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by

His authority, it is my joy and privilege to proclaim the Easter truth and daily joy that

you are forgiven in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT: Exodus 14:10-15:1

As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching

after them. They were terrified and cried out to the Lord. They said to Moses, "Was it

because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have

you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? Didn't we say to you in Egypt, 'Leave us alone;

let us serve the Egyptians'? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to

die in the desert!" Moses answered the people, "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will

see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will

Page 7: Those Serving Today719b9b6e6951f8719a6c-631724108d5e0fc8d9845c22c9729297.r71.cf2.rackcdn.…2017/04/16  · Diane Haffner, Marie Mendel, Amy Schaefer Ushers 6:00am Zone – 3 Wayne

never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still." Then the Lord said

to Moses, "Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on. Raise your staff

and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go

through the sea on dry ground. I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will

go in after them. And I will gain glory through Pharaoh and all his army, through his

chariots and his horsemen. The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I gain glory

through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen." Then the angel of God, who had been

traveling in front of Israel's army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also

moved from in front and stood behind them, coming between the armies of Egypt and

Israel. Throughout the night the cloud brought darkness to the one side and light to the

other side; so neither went near the other all night long. Then Moses stretched out his hand

over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and

turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, and the Israelites went through the sea on

dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left. The Egyptians pursued

them, and all Pharaoh's horses and chariots and horsemen followed them into the sea.

During the last watch of the night the Lord looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud

at the Egyptian army and threw it into confusion. He made the wheels of their chariots

come off so that they had difficulty driving. And the Egyptians said, "Let's get away from

the Israelites! The Lord is fighting for them against Egypt." Then the Lord said to Moses,

"Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians

and their chariots and horsemen." Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at

daybreak the sea went back to its place. The Egyptians were fleeing toward it, and the Lord

swept them into the sea. The water flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen-

the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed the Israelites into the sea. Not one of them

survived. But the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on

their right and on their left. That day the Lord saved Israel from the hands of the Egyptians,

and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore. And when the Israelites saw the great

power the Lord displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the Lord and put their

trust in him and in Moses his servant. Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the

Lord: "I will sing to the Lord , for he is highly exalted. The horse and its rider he has hurled

into the sea.

EPISTLE: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11

Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received

and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel, you are saved, if you hold firmly

to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I

passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the

Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the

Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared

to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living,

though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and

last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born. For I am the least of the

apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church

of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect.

No, I worked harder than all of them--yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.

Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed.

ALLELUIA AND VERSE

HOLY GOSPEL: John 20:1-18 L: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the twentieth chapter.

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to

the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came

running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They

have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!"

So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were

running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the

tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen

lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter, who was

Page 9: Those Serving Today719b9b6e6951f8719a6c-631724108d5e0fc8d9845c22c9729297.r71.cf2.rackcdn.…2017/04/16  · Diane Haffner, Marie Mendel, Amy Schaefer Ushers 6:00am Zone – 3 Wayne

behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as

well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by

itself, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb

first, also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from

Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) Then the disciples went back to their

homes, but Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look

into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus' body had been, one at

the head and the other at the foot. They asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?"

"They have taken my Lord away," she said, "and I don't know where they have put

him." At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize

that it was Jesus. "Woman," he said, "why are you crying? Who is it you are looking

for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she said, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell

me where you have put him, and I will get him." Jesus said to her, "Mary." She

turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, "Rabboni!" (which means Teacher).

Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead

to my brothers and tell them, 'I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my

God and your God.' " Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: "I have

seen the Lord!" And she told them that he had said these things to her.

L: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary . . . evermore praising You and saying:

SANCTUS

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

P: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom

You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our

Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-

availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross.

Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive,

renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His

body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together,

we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast

of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers;

deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship,

with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

LORD'S PRAYER

P: Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

ALL: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and

About Holy Communion—The Lord’s Supper is celebrated here in the belief and glad

confidence that our Lord gives us as He says, not only bread and wine, but His very body and

blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and

with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and

forgive and love as He forgives and loves us. If this is your belief, we welcome you to join us at

the Lord’s table.

Because we are called to examine ourselves before receiving the Lord’s Supper (I Corinthians

11:28-29), we encourage you to consider the questions on p. 329-330 in the front of the hymnal.

If you are communing with us for the first time, or if you would like a fuller understanding of

what we as Lutherans believe about the Lord’s Supper, please pick up a copy of “What is the

Lord’s Supper?” at the Information table in the entryway.

Please reserve the white grape juice cups in the center of the communion trays for those who

for health reasons are unable to drink wine. If your health requires gluten-free wafers, they are

available upon request. Speak to the pastor prior to the service. Our pastors are happy to speak to

you further if you have any questions.

C: let us rejoice and be glad in it.

P: Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good;

C: for His steadfast love endures forever!

P: Bless we the Lord!

C: Thanks be to God!

P: Gracious God, by this Holy Communion, You have given us a foretaste of Your

eternal kingdom, where death will have been defeated, where there will be no more

crying or pain or mourning, and where all the faithful will be resurrected in Christ.

For this glimpse of what You have in store for all creation, we give You thanks and

praise. We ask that by Your Holy Spirit, our lives would show forth glimpses of

Your glory, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C: Amen.

Sharing the Caring Christ with All People Matthew 28:1-10: When Mary Magdalene saw her risen Lord, she went with great excitement to tell the disciples that she had seen the Lord and shared

with them what Jesus had told her. We have seen our Risen Lord by faith and that sure faith inspires us to share with others the hope we have

because Jesus lives! Celebrate the victory over Satan, death and the grave by telling someone else that Easter matters: it matters to you and it matters to them. Without Easter, they have no answer to the problem of sin and death. But with Jesus, a Savior who lives, there is joy and victory in the face of sin and death. Because Jesus lives, those who believe in Him live now and for eternity. Easter makes all the difference in this world and the next; to keep this message to yourself would be a tragedy. We have seen the Lord. He lives. What joy! What triumph! And it’s all yours. Not to keep to yourself - but to share and share and share!

Pastoral Call Committee Update The Pastoral Call Committee held an organizational meeting on March 23, 2017. As you all know by now, Pastor Paul will be retiring at the end of September, which will create a Pastor vacancy at Trinity. An informational meeting was held on March 13th, with Pastor Fondow, President of the MN North District, to discuss the procedure and process that is involved in making a “Call.” Also assisting our Church will be Circuit Pastor, Pastor Brady Finnern from Messiah Lutheran Church in Sartell. Jeff Cziok and Jon Lenz will Co-Chair the Call Committee process at Trinity. The Call Committee includes the following members: John Copeland, Justin Hackett, Bob Terpstra, Thia Terpstra, Clinton Wenger, Judy Lazer, Karen Petron-Broda, Daniel Reineke, Lucie Schwartzkopf, Raquel Alstrup, Joanne Keck Craig Cooper, and John Sprengler. Please feel free to contact them if you have any questions or concerns. We will be asking the congregation for their assistance, namely to identify goals for Trinity, and also identify Pastoral expectations. The Call Committee will additionally be asking the congregation to “Nominate a Pastor for Consideration,” if they wish, and to assist with our “Self-Study.” This process began on April 2nd, and the congregation will have 3 weeks to complete these items. The “Self-Study” forms & the Pastoral Nomination forms can be found in the church office. All forms should be turned into the office, or placed in the offering plate by April 23rd. During this time, we ask you for your prayers, guidance, and assistance. We ask that you keep Pastor Paul and Nancy in your prayers as they transition into a new adventure. We ask that you call upon the Holy Spirit, to be with Trinity, and assist us with our mission and vision. Prayerfully, Jeff Cziok, Call Committee Co-Chair.

What is a “good death?” Have you ever heard someone suggest the notion of a “good death?” Have you ever heard yourself uttering the words “I would never want to die like that,” or “I hope I leave this world like he did.” Maybe you have been involved in difficult end-of-life decisions for a loved-one in a hospital setting wondering if you are doing the right thing. End of life decisions can be difficult, but they don’t need to be as difficult as they often are. There are things we can do to plan-ahead. There are conversations we can have to make our passing from this world to the next less traumatic for our loved-ones. We invite you to come to an event to begin that discussion. ‘The Convenings’ is based on a series of remarkable broadcast conversations Minnesota Public Radio’s Cathy Wurzer had with University of St. Thomas Dean Bruce Kramer and their book “We Know How This Ends: Living while Dying.” Kramer died in 2015 after living with ALS. Join Cathy and special guests for an evening of music, storytelling and meaningful conversation about living and dying well. St. John’s University, Stephen B. Humphrey Theater, Collegeville. April 18, 6:30-8:00 p.m. To register or for more information: www.honoringchoices.org/the-convenings or call 612-362-3724

WE WELCOME FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN

We are glad you are here! If there is a time during the Worship Service that you feel your child (or you) needs a “time out,” please feel free to leave the service. If you leave the service, you can go to the lobby or use the large conference room across from the church office. The conference room has speakers and one-way glass so you can still participate in Worship. During the Sunday school hour, (9:15am – 10:15am) and during the 10:30am worship service the nursery is staffed for children 0-3 years old. The nursery is in the preschool on the north end of the building. It is the first classroom on the left as you enter the preschool parent lounge area. There are also speakers in the nursery so you can listen to the service. Activity bags for young children to use are in the plastic tub outside the church office. FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE, WE OFFER THESE AND OTHER SERVICES: Large Print Editions of our bulletins are available from our ushers by request. If you need further information, ask any usher or church member. Also be sure to stop by the Information Desk in the lobby. Your needs are important to us! Bible Study for Adults on Sundays: we start at 9:15am in the fellowship hall. Coffee & Fellowship – after the 8:00am service, come by the kitchen, have a cookie, coffee and time for fellowship. Come and meet old friends and make new friends!
