I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support andattending the Annual Town Meeting, our Senior Luncheons and various ThorntonTownship events. We are happy to provide time when Senior Citizens and the residentsof Thornton Township can come out and have a good time with their neighbors. We arelooking forward to seeing you at our upcoming events, Day in the Park Picnics and TheTaste of Thornton on Aug 20th, 2016.

As a part of Supervisor Frank M. Zuccarelli’s and Thornton Township’s Faith, Dignity, and Respect Initiative, we are

hosting a Youth Conference at South Suburban College on Wed-nesday, August 31, 2016 from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM. The themeof the conference will revolve around the nationally-acclaimedand evidence-based Law and Your Community training facilitatedby NOBLE (National Organization of Black Law EnforcementExecutives).

We have partnered with School Districts 205 and 215. They will “self-select” 200juniors and seniors from each of their 5 respective schools (i.e., Thornwood, Thornton,Thornridge, TF North and TF South) for an anticipated total of 1000 students.

Facilitators from NOBLE will provide a 2-2 ½ hour training during the conference. This training will provide students with information on the law, their rights, and howbest to present and interact with law enforcement, amongst other relevant topics. This

training will, hopefully, serve as an “appetizer” for NOBLE’s standard 12 week school-based training program. We understand the value of this and NOBLE’s developingTrain-the-Trainer program for our students, parents, staff, and communitystakeholders.

We are hoping to solicit the support of popular local entertainers and/orprofessional sports figures to be on hand and participate in the training. We believethat their “buy-in” and presence will have an opportunity to have a profound andlasting impact on our students. Though conversations continue, as of today, we haveyet to secure those personalities. Once confirmed, our Media/PR department will besending out community alerts and press releases. Please stay tuned.

For more information, please contact Dr. J. Weems, Co-Chairman of ThorntonTownship’s Faith, Dignity, and Respect Initiative and Director of Youth and FamilyServices at 708/596-6040 ext. 2013 or [email protected].

Chicago Tribune Highlights Township Services*

Last June Chicago Tribune reporter/columnist Gregory Pratt, spent a day with Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli, traveling around the township to witness

firsthand and report on the various publicservices provided by township govern-ment in Thornton Township.

“Everywhere Frank Zuccarelli goes inThornton Township people approach himfor a handshake or a hug,” Pratt laterreported. “At the senior center in CalumetCity, where the township hosts lunchesand events…outside the township foodpantry in Harvey, which is the largest inIllinois…or in Dolton, while one of the

township’s youth work crews mow a resident’s lawn, Zuccarelli greets everyonewarmly.”

“We really have a great deal of need out here,” Supervisor Zuccarelli told the Tribunejournalist. “Some of our residents and neighbors have been forgotten and we do thingsthat state government no longer does and municipal and county governments can’tkeep up with,” Zuccarelli said.

Reported On Senior ProgramsPratt’s Tribune story reported about the Township’s senior transportation program

that provides curbside service for a $1 donation each way – providing transportationfor seniors to medical appointments andshopping. The story also highlighted theweekly hot, low-cost lunches for seniors andother social offerings provided.

“Zuccarelli is very popular with seniors,”Pratt went on to report and shared a storyrelated to him by a 63-year old Harvey residentliving in a facility for people with disabilities.“If it wasn’t for Supervisor Zuccarelli, a lotof people would be hurting.”

Others were even more assertive, the Tribune went on toreport. “Don’t ever bad-rap Frank Zuccarrelli,” 82 year oldArlene Gilbert said. “he listens to seniors, treats us withrespect and listens to our complaints and our concerns.Without the township, what would seniors do?” Gilbertconcluded.

Nearly 1,000 township seniors no longer physically ableto complete lawn maintenance work, can sign up to havethe township provide the weekly service for them.

“This is a crucial service we’re providing from a couple standpoints,” Zuccarelli toldthe Tribune. “Not only are we helping senior homeowners who can no longer do thework, but in the process are helping maintain neighborhood aesthetics, local propertyvalues and, providing summer jobs for nearly 100 township teenagers who mightotherwise be sitting idle and maybe getting into trouble.”

The Tribune interviewed a Dolton resident, Ramona Jackson who greeted workerswith a friendly smile. She said she tried to maintain her own lawn as long as she couldbut now found it too difficult. Shealso told the reporter that she reallyappreciates the service and likes thatyoung people get to see how seniorslive. “I think they get to learn aboutwork,” Jackson told the Trib.

“In many ways, township govern-ment – at least here in Thornton –provides critical, quality of lifeservices that local and county government cannot provide effectively or efficiently,”Zuccarelli said. “While the petty bickering and ‘politics as usual’ continues inSpringfield, we need to remember that real people have real needs that aren’t beingmet by state, county or municipal governments. That’s why township government ismore critical now than ever before. We have hundreds of people we serve every dayand we’re proud of the work we do,” Zuccarelli said.

* The Tribune story appeared in the Chicago Tribune on June 1, 2016
