Music 395 Syllabus Music 395 - Form and Analysis (3 credits); MWF 11:00-11:50 a.m.; E-353 HFAC Dr. Neil Thornock, E-579A (go inside E-579 to get to it) Office hours: Tuesday 12-2, knock, or by appointment Contact: 422-1482; [email protected] Course Description and Objectives We will study some of the primary forms of Western art music, focusing on the Common Practice Period (Bach to Brahms). We will also touch on music from before and after this period. By the end of the course, you should be able to identify and discuss, through visual and aural analysis, the forms we will study. This understanding should inform your performance and interpretation, as well as increase your appreciation, of the great music of the past and present. Prerequisites You must have passed Music 293, 295, and 297 with a C- or higher to enroll for this course. Materials Paper/pencils/etc.. Grading Assignments 40% Project 1 (small forms) 15% Project 2 (large forms) 15% Small Projects 1-3 15% Final (cumulative) 15% Assignments You will be given 23 assignments throughout the semester. Assignments receive one of three possible grades: 2 (completed), 1 (more than 25% done), and 0 (less than 25% done). You will record your grade at the beginning of each class period. If you are not present to record your grade, you will not receive a grade for the assignment, unless you have made arrangements with me beforehand. Use the course schedule to keep track of assignments. Projects and Final Exam The projects will be described in greater detail at a later date. The final exam will be comprehensive. It will also be discussed at a later date. Attendance Recording of assignments will count for attendance on the days you record them. On the other days, you will record your attendance. Each absence results in 2 attendance points. Each tardiness results in 1 attendance point. The first 4 attendance points are free, after which any further attendance points will reduce your final percentage by that amount. For example, if you missed three days (6 points) and were late once (1 point), you would have 7 points, the last 3 of which count against your final grade.
