your last chancehellip If you have any concerns or important
information regarding your childrsquos grade placement for 2018

Studentsfamilies who are leaving It is very important for us to have the correct enrolment
numbers for children attending TWPS in 2018 so that the best
possible class structures and class sizes can be organised to
maximise student engagement wellbeing and learning
We understand that some families are moving houses and there
may be schools that are closer to your new address We will
support your child and their transition to a new school Please
contact us as soon as possible to let us know if your child
children will not be attending TWPS in 2018
Enrolments There are still a number of families who have not yet enrolled
their prep child for 2018 Please collect an enrolment form from
the office to complete and return it to school as soon as possible

During November we are running a Prep Orientation Transition Program to familiarise the new Preps with our wonderful school and its procedures Parents also stay during this time for the Information sessions present by the Prep teachers Mrs Wright and myself

Welcome back to our entire community and I hope
everyone enjoyed the break and the time you spent with
the children I thoroughly enjoyed my holidays in Sydney
with my family We had amazing weather and it was
wonderful to have our two puppies with us enjoying their
first experiences at the beach
What a pleasure it was to return to school on Monday and
be greeted by huge smiles from students who were
excited to learn and teachers who were eager to teach and

Wersquove had a great first week back at Breakfast Club The chil-dren have enjoyed a healthy breakfast and caught up with each other about their exciting school holidays
Breakfast club runs every day from 8am to 830am in the Multi-Purpose room We have lots of yummy and healthy food choices for everybody
Reminder Unless attending Breakfast Club children are not to be in the school yard before 830am when there is teacher supervision Additionally children are not to leave the school premises after attending breakfast club This is for the safety of all children Thank you for your cooperation

There is much talk in the media about the benefits of learning to fail One school gave their students juggling balls to encourage their students to learn the importance of having a go perseverance and that it was ok to struggle There are things that I find easy and many things that I donrsquot ndash just ask my family about my lack of eyehand
coordination HOWEVER THATrsquoS OK Educational psychologist Michael Grose has the following to say about this Why finishing 4th beats winning Itrsquos great to see the smiles of satisfaction on a childrsquos face after winning a game a race or finishing on top of the pile in any endeavour Winning is a good feeling Winning means theyrsquore doing well Itrsquos equated with success Itrsquos a good habit to develop helliphellip or so the theory goes I beg to differ Winning is just one story Not finishing first carries emotion too butrsquos itrsquos not necessarily positive Itrsquos good for kids to experience disappointment annoyance and frustration just as itrsquos good to experience positive emo-tions Itrsquos good to learn when you are young that bad feelings happen but they donrsquot last This is a huge life lesson Not winning also teaches kids to link success with effort It teaches them that perseverance pays off eventually Helping kids accept setbacks and unpleasant emotions rather than block them out is the key to building their resilience What about the child who never wins Some children seem to never win or hardly ever do One of my kids always seemed to have 4th place sewn up in any race ndash just missing a ribbon - except if he was trying to get into a four person relay team Hersquod usually finish 5th As a caring parent it was hard work keeping his chin up year after year But thatrsquos what you have to do He eventually stopped doing some of the activities where he struggled in replacing them with school subjects sports and activities that more suited his interests and abilities But not before he learned the value of struggle As an adult he can now articulate the disappointment he felt coming close but never quite hitting the winnerrsquos circle but he can see the value of hanging in there long after others have given up He knows persistence is one of his strongest assets So if you have a child who continually comes 4th (figuratively
as well as literally) here are some strategies you can focus on 1Encourage liberally Stanford University professor Carol Dweck (who has written a great deal about this very topic) encourages parents to use process praise ( ldquoyou used smart strategiesrdquo ldquoyou worked hard on that onerdquo ldquoyou thought long and hard to work that problem outrdquo) She says this helps kids value effort and work for longer-term results 2 Focus on struggles not just on victories Your focus as a parent reveals your values If you value effort and struggle then you need to be on the lookout for these so you can applaud them If winning is all you value then yoursquoll focus on that There is a choice 3 Share stories of struggle and overcoming adversity Whether itrsquos stories from your own life (kids to love to hear when their parents struggled) or stories from news public or sporting life inspire and encourage kids with the narratives of the struggles of others Itrsquos easy as a parent to get caught in the winning trap But maybe just maybe finishing 4th is better for kids in the long-term than always being a winner

as well as literally) here are some strategies you can focus on 1Encourage liberally Stanford University professor Carol Dweck (who has written a great deal about this very topic) encourages parents to use process praise ( ldquoyou used smart strategiesrdquo ldquoyou worked hard on that onerdquo ldquoyou thought long and hard to work that problem outrdquo) She says this helps kids value effort and work for longer-term results 2 Focus on struggles not just on victories Your focus as a parent reveals your values If you value effort and struggle then you need to be on the lookout for these so you can applaud them If winning is all you value then yoursquoll focus on that There is a choice 3 Share stories of struggle and overcoming adversity Whether itrsquos stories from your own life (kids to love to hear when their parents struggled) or stories from news public or sporting life inspire and encourage kids with the narratives of the struggles of others Itrsquos easy as a parent to get caught in the winning trap But maybe just maybe finishing 4th is better for kids in the long-term than always being a winner

Hi Everyone It was good to see the smiling faces of our students after their two-week break The staff were also looking re-freshed
There is much talk in the media about the benefits of learning to fail One school gave their students juggling balls to encourage their students to learn the importance of having a go perseverance and that it was ok to struggle There are things that I find easy and many things that I donrsquot ndash just ask my family about my lack of eyehand
