THIS WEEK March 21, 2014 THANK YOU UMCOR. Every year between the months of January and April a cholera outbreak claims many lives along the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and this year is no exception. For example, in Nyembo Mpungu, 28 had died and 67 were being treated when medicine provided by UMCOR arrived. We are very grateful to UMCOR again for making the difference among so many lives that could have perished for the lack of medicines in so many villages that have been in isolation. The 12 tons of life-saving medicine worth $40,000.00 was given this year by UMCOR after a report by our new health coordinator Dr. Alexis to Rev. Betty Musau of United Methodist Church communications, who also contacted Shannon Trilli director of health for UMCOR in New york and a prompt response saved many lives. The 12 tons of liquid medicine are being distributed to the following sites: Nyembo, Bukama, Luena, Malemba, Kalemi, Mulongo, Kimba, Kyabu, Kabondo, Kizanga, and Butumba. All these areas are very hard to reach by road, part of the reason Wings of the Morning was contacted to facilitate the transportation. On March 15, 2014, Pilot Gaston landed in Nyembo Mpungu with 900 kg of medicines (60 boxes). The medicines arrived just in time and was distributed to serve the villages of Nyembo, Kimba, Kyalu, Tuala, etc. Almost all of the villagers in Nyembo came to help when the medicine arrived. They carried the medicines on their heads from the airfield all the way to the United Methodist Church clinic, and it was a beautiful, heart-warming sight.
