Senior English Choral Speaking Team - Sir’s Secret Agent
6D Chan Ho Tin, Benny
Hi everyone, I am Benny, a Senior English choral speaking team member. This year, we presented an
interesting poem: “Sir’s a Secret Agent” by Tony Langham. We spent three months practising the poem,
and it was really fun. Our teachers first thought of dividing the members into three groups. We formed the
shape of 0s and 7, symbolizing double oh seven, the code name of James Bond. I thought that this grouping
was really special and meaningful. Then the teachers thought of actions to enhance the meaning of the
poem. The part I find most interesting is when a student named Kenneth pretended to be the secret agent.
He even borrowed a tuxedo to wear and he looked really cool in it. Also, we had to hum the James Bond
theme song at the beginning of the poem while Kenneth moved suspiciously around with a finger gun as if
he was being tracked down. At first, we all laughed at Kenneth as his moves were a bit clumsy, but practice
makes perfect, he later moved as professional as James Bond and we all found him adorable. Despite all
this, the hardest part of the poem was to speak simultaneously. For that, we practised again and again.
However, we didn’t find it tedious as we learnt how to work as a team. Occasionally, the teachers would put
the three groups in a competition. The winners would be treated to delicious chocolate lollies. For the
treats, every student did their best and it was a close call every time. Even if we didn’t win, they would still
treat us to jellybeans to recognize our effort.
On the day of the competition, I was really nervous because I had never performed in front of that
many students. When we started humming the theme song and Kenneth started doing his actions, every
student downstage laughed. I felt a bit embarrassed but I kept on presenting the poem. I remember the
teacher told us that we had to be committed to our roles. I think we did a great job, though. The result
would only be announced in two hours’ time. Only Kenneth and another student remained to listen to the
result and the rest of us had to go back to school for our lessons. It was a shame that we were not able to
witness the momentous moment, the adjudicator announcing the result that we were the champion. Our
three months of hard work really paid off. We had achieved an incredibly high score - ninety marks! When
hearing the news, I was so delighted that I whooped in joy. I have another piece of good news to share with
you: we were recommended by the adjudicator to perform at the Prize-winners’ Recitals on 15 January
2012. It was such a great honour to perform in front of a wider crowd of audience and our performance will
later be shown on TV.
From the speech training, I have learnt to speak fluently and confidently onstage and I don’t have stage
fright anymore. I also think that it is an honour to be a member of the choral speaking team. It is really fun
and it is an excellent learning experience. Thanks to the effort of the teachers and all team members, we
all made the team wonderful.
