  • Collectively led by drummer and vocalist Guillermo E Brown, bassist Keith Witty and saxophonist Christophe Panzani, THIEFS is a grammatically incoherent jazz bastardization. Fully acoustic to fully electronic, THIEFS weaves elements of modern composition and improvisation into a boundary-less foundation of beats. Between them, Brown, Witty and Panzani have supported artists as varied as Amel Larrieux, Anthony Braxton, Carla Bley, David S. Ware, EL-P, Hocus Pocus, Jamie Lidell, Saul Williams, Somi and VIjay Iyer. As THIEFS, their experiences and influences make a hot mess in the melting pan. THIEFS has recently been named an FAJE (French American Jazz Exchange) grantee for 2012-2013, a joint program of FACE (French American Cultural Exchange) and Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, with generous funding from The Cultural Services of the French Embassy, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Socit des Auteurs et Compositeurs de Musique (SACEM), Florence Gould Foundation, and InstitutFranais.

The Messenger is a project that reflects not only the guitarists virtuosity on his instrument, but also his impressive compositional skillswriting all but two tracks. Best described simply as a Kevin Eubanks recordingwithout specific categorizationas his intent with The Messenger is to communicate the breadth of his artistic influences. I wanted to branch out a little bit more on this recording, Eubanks states. I didnt want to be as concerned with the jazz sound as much; I wanted to let out a little bit more of what Ive been musically exposed to.

  • MARK ADAMSLOVE & DANCErrecommended listening

Love and Dance emerges from one of the most profound losses in Adams life, the death of his father in the spring of 2011. My dad was only 65 when I lost him to cancer, says Adams. I wasnt interested in recording again, or even playing piano again. I was in such a depression, because part of me died when he died. But I worked my way out of it by making this record. Music is good for the soul, and this project helped me come out of a dark place. Somehow, out of all that, I made an upbeat, positive record about love and dance and making people smile. That was what I wanted to do. But that required a leap of faith, which came in the form of guitarist and producer Gerrey Johnson, the first person to whom Adams ever handed over the job of producing a record. This was the first time I let someone else take the reins, he says. Gerrey actually changed my approach to writing, my approach to soloing, my approach to music in general. Letting go was an adjustment, but I had worked with Gerrey in the past and hes a good friend of mine, someone for whom I have a lot of respect. His presence on this project made it better than what it would have been otherwise.

The set opens with Silk Dress, a smoldering, sensual composition written by Johnson that derives its structure from a minimalist weave of melody and harmony. Johnsons programming establishes a shimmering background on which piano and guitar maintain a seductive conversation from start to finish. Adams shifts to fender Rhodes for a funky rendition of John Coltranes classic Giant Steps, with help from Johnson, along with bassist Lamar Jones and drummer Quin Anderson. If I had tried to record that song in a straightahead context, it would have been impossible to make it my own, says Adams. So the challenge was to try to make it new and fresh, and thats what Quin did with his backbeat the kind that younger listeners can identify with. Love Dance is an intriguing piece that features Marquel Jordan on tenor sax in an arrangement that positions the piano as a percussive instrument as much as a melodic and harmonic instrument. Goodbye is Adams tribute to his late father, with a unique vocal delivery by Casey Benjamin on vocorder. Despite the songs personal backstory, the song is more introspective than mournful. I was originally going to sing it myself, says Adams, but when I got to the studio and saw that Casey Benjamin had this vocorder hooked up, I showed him how I wanted it to be sung, and he did an amazing job. I said, I cant top that. Lets do it. Thats probably my favorite song on the entire record.

In addition to Benjamin, Adams brings in a couple other guest vocalists, including Jonathan Quash on Nicas Dream (a Horace Silver standard for which Adams wrote some lyrics about a love affair coming to a close) and Cassandra Thompson on the wounded but defiant Never a Fool. Jonathan sang on my previous record, Emebellishment: The Q&A Project, which turned out to be a great mixture of vocal jazz and instrumental jazz, says Adams. Cassandra is someone whom I used to take on the road to perform with my band. Ive been working with her for a long time, and shes a great vocalist. Through it all, accessibility was always a priority for Adams in the making of Love and Dance. Making a 20th century art form relevant to 21st century audience was imperative.

  • JAMES SANDERSrrecommended listeningJames Sanders Blue Violin A Jazz Legacy is not only the latest milestone on the jazz odyssey the Chicago-based violinist and bandleader embarked on after graduating with a performance degree from Yale in 1989, but also a tribute to the Windy Citys illustrious jazz violin tradition as personified by masters like Johnny Frigo, Eddie South, Stuff Smith and Darnell Howard.

Joined on the recording by the Kevin OConnell Trio (pianist OConnell was a member of Clifford Jordans quartet in the 1980s and has performed with Philly Joe Jones, Vernel Fournier, Al Grey, Billy Hart, Victor Gaskin, Joe Lee Wilson and Walter Booker among others), Sanders presents a straight-ahead jazz program ranging from modern classics by Wes Montgomery, Miles Davis, Kenny Barron, Steve Swallow and Bud Powell to gems from the Great American Songbook by Richard Rodgers and Jerome Kern. The fact that - with the exception of the CDs title track penned by Stuff Smith most of the compositions on the CD are usually not associated with the violin is a testimony to Sanders virtuosity and versatility on his instrument.

This music is, in a way, over two decades in the making. When violinist James Sanders returned home to Chicago in 1989 after earning a performance degree at Yale, he thought of himself as a classical musician. But a chance encounter with jazz violin legend Johnny Frigo changed all that. Frigo heard the young man busking on the street and invited him to his weekly club gig. He was soon sitting in between Frigos sets and discovering the pleasures of jazz improvisation. A seed was planted. Over the next 22 years Sanders honed his chops as both a leader and collaborator in various contexts: Latin jazz, free improvisation, Gypsy swing, third stream and more, all the while holding down a chair in an orchestra. He also learned that Chicago was home to a storied jazz violin tradition: Besides Frigo, Eddie South, Darnell Howard and Stuff Smith had all spent time here.

In 2012, Sanders decided the time was right to honor that tradition with a straight up jazz recording. No Latin, nothing outside, just pure jazz. They selected nine classics and set about writing fresh arrangements. Ranging from hard bop to post bop and back to the Great American Songbook, they all provide a great platform for Sanders incisive yet spirited playing. The rhythm section of OConnell, bassist Stewart Miller and drummer George Fludas swings hard when called for and provides elegantly restrained support on the ballads. There is almost none of the rep associated with violin. Instead, Sanders takes on the role of a horn player on tunes written with sax or trumpet in mind. The sole exception is Stuff Smiths Blue Violin. Without guys like Stuff, says Sanders, I never would have taken this journey.

  • We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. Thats why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! At a time when the economy is struggling, it is good to know that the determination to present jazz in a festival atmosphere is still alive and well.

  • Each February, the best college jazz bands in the country converge on the Elmhurst campus for three days of performances and education. The bands take turns performing for some of the greatest names in professional jazz today, who offer critiques and award a variety of honors. The professionals cap off each night of the Festival with a rousing performance of their own.

For the college bands, the Festival offers a great opportunity to learn from some of todays greatest jazz musicians. For the audience, its a chance to hear both college bands and jazz greats.

The current Elmhurst College Jazz Festival rose from the ashes of the American College Jazz Festival, which was established in 1968. The original festival took place at eight regional sites throughout the United States, one of which was Elmhurst College. Each regional festival produced a winning band, combo, and vocalist, who then performed at a national festival on Memorial Day weekend.

The national festival disbanded in 1973, but the Elmhurst Festival continuedand grew, both in size and in stature. By 1992, the Festival had hosted so many jazz greats that its Silver Anniversary reunion of guest artists and judges included Louie Bellson, Pete Christlieb, Conte Candoli, Terry Gibbs, Frank Mantooth, Bobby Shew, Clark Terry, Denis DiBlasio, Lee Konitz, and Jiggs Whigham. The celebration made such a splash that it was featured on CBS-TVs Sunday Morning News.

Since then, the Festivals reputation has continued to grow. Festival performers in recent years have included the Maria Schneider Orchestra, the Mingus Big Band, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, the Bob Mintzer Big Band, the Dave Holland Quintet, Joe Lovano, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Nicholas Payton, the Bill Holman Band, Diana Krall, Phil Woods, Maynard Ferguson, Dee Dee Bridgewater, John Fedchock, Byron Stripling, Mike Abene, Randy Brecker, Lanny Morgan, and the Count Basie Orchestra.

FitzGeralds has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950s and early 60s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

    Hw C M FFRANK DRONE

Frank DRone is one of the few finer singers and performers around and creates great vibes with his audiences. This quote, from Leonard Feather, one of the worlds foremost music critics, probably best describes Frank and his talents today. It takes a while to achieve words of this sort. Franks nique and rare gift has taken him before the spotlights of virtually every major nightclub in the United States. Frank was headlining the world famous Copacabana when Tony Bennett took over the microphone on opening night and told the audience, A few years back, Nat King Cole said that Frank DRone was the finest singer around. Tonight he has proved that Nat was right!

With a lot of tenacity and a little help from his older brother, Jim learned how to play the blues and to read music having no formal lessons until he was in college. Still, by the time he was studying music as an undergraduate, he was proficient enough to be selected to perform in a trio with guest-artist Wynton Marsalis. He went on to earn a Master of Music degree from DePaul University in Chicago.

    Hw C M FLINDY ENDRES

For Lindy Endres, music played a bit of a different role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the dancer, never the singer. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindys flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.
