First Dayof Spring

is March 20th

Sunday, March 20th is the First Day of Spring, the Vernal Equinox!

An equinox occurs twice a year,

when Earth’s axis is not tilted away

from or towards the Sun, and the Sun

can be observed directly overhead

at the Equator. Equinox is derived

from Latin words aequus (equal)

and nox (night), because around the

equinox, night and day are of nearly

equal duration. At equinox, the Sun is

at 1 of 2 opposite points above the

Equator; either the autumnal point or

the vernal point. Autumnal equinox

occurs in September, and vernal

equinox occurs on March 20th this

year. Welcome this glorious season

in the Pocono Mountains!

Fiddle Contest & Bluegrass Shin-Dig on April 3rd

“It’s Scottish bagpipes and old time fi ddlin’. It’s Methodist, Holiness, and Baptist. It’s blues and jazz and it has a high lonesome sound. It’s plain music and it tells a good story. I want it to go from my heart to your heart and I want us both to hear it.” Bill Monroe on Bluegrass

Bluegrass music is an American art form with roots in Irish, Scottish, and English traditional music. Cherished

by immigrants in the hills and lowlands of Appalachia, the music survived in seclusion until the great migrations of

the early 20th century. Combined with jazz, blues, and popular infl uences, Bluegrass moved into its own form. Many

organizations, festivals, bands, and devotees worldwide now hold Bluegrass to be their primary source of musical

enjoyment.

On Sunday, April 3rd, Pocono Bluegrass & Folk Society, sponsored by Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts and the

Pocono Arts Council, presents a Bluegrass Shin-Dig featuring Stained Grass Window and Country Grass; a highlight

will be The 29th Annual Ron Nauman Fiddle Contest! Stage performances continue from 12:00pm to 5:00pm. Tote

along your own instrument to join one of the jams happening throughout the 1920’s-era BPO Elks Lodge at 260

Washington Street in East Stroudsburg. The kitchen serves food at modest prices, and there’s a full bar. Admission

is $7.00/pp. Call (570) 424-2937 or (570) 992-2259; reach the Elks Lodge at (570) 421-9140. Shin-Dig more at
