Page 2: This Week in Canberra

As the only attraction to offer a true 360 degree view over the city and across to the Brindabella Ranges, Black Mountain Tower is the place to start your Canberra visit. The view from the tower gives visitors an understanding of Canberra’s complex layout and serves as a distinctive beacon on the Canberra skyline for those who go astray. And if you think the views are

impressive by day, the night view over Canberra from the sky is bedazzling. Contained within the tower’s open air and enclosed viewing galleries are a cafeteria and gift shop as well as Alto, Canberra’s only revolving restaurant.

Open 9:00am-9:00pm dailyBlack Mountain Drive, Acton ACT 2601Ph: 1800 806 718

Black Mountain Tower is the best place to begin your Canberra visit…

WELCOME to the autumn issue of THIS WEEK IN CANBERRA, with information on what’s happening in and around the city.

Two exciting exhibitions will be calling Canberra home over autumn. Traversing Antarctica: The Australian Experience, at the NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF AUSTRALIA, explores Australian expeditions to the region through images, documents and objects. And The Life of Patrick White at the NATIONAL LIBRARY OF AUSTRALIA tells the story of White – Australia’s only Nobel Laureate in Literature – in all his guises.

This is also the time of year to see the nation’s capital in a whole new light. During ENLIGHTEN, part of the Canberra Festival, some of the most popular attractions will keep their doors open after dark and host tours, live performances and dining experiences.

And for a moving tribute to our Australian service men and women, head to the ANZAC Day Dawn Service on 25 April at the AUSTRALIAN WAR MEMORIAL.

Australian nurses have been going to war for well over 100 years, but their important contribution to Australia’s overseas military operations often goes unreported.

The Nurses: from Zululand to Afghanistan exhibition at the Australian War Memorial explores the involvement of nurses from the first known Australian in the Zulu War of 1879 to the experiences of the male and female nurses in recent conflicts and peace-keeping operations.

Using the Memorial’s rich collection, the exhibition highlights the personal stories of Australia’s service nurses who have served overseas, their difficulties and challenges, along with their determination to care for the sick and wounded come what may.

Traversing Antarctica: The Australian Experience explores Australia’s role in Antarctica since Douglas Mawson’s 1911–14 Australasian Antarctic Expedition. Original documents and objects from early expeditions feature, with interactive displays and imagery. As part of Enlighten, acclaimed harpist Alice Giles shares her Antarctic journey through music, sound and images in two live performances on 9 and 10 March ($50, bookings essential). Courage to care 13 February-9 April

Courge to Care is an exhibition that focuses on ordinary people who have undertaken extraordinary acts in order to help someone else. This exhibition is geared towards educating visitors about prejudices, getting them to think about their own personal values and asking them how they can make a difference. As part of the exhibition, visitors are given the rare opportunity to meet WWII survivors and listen to first-hand accounts of how they risked their lives to save someone else’s.

Start the day with brunch at the award-winning SILO BAKERY in Kingston and move on to lunch at a café in one of the shopping precincts, such as the Old Bus Depot Markets, Canberra Centre or THE TERRACE MANUKA . Or head to the many cafés attached to museums, galleries and archives.

For a quick drop, the many wineries within an easy drive of the city make for a leisurely lunch and great dinner, and all offer their own produce to drink with your meal. Try LERIDA ESTATE WINERY or POACHERS PANTRY SMOKEHOUSE CAFÉ, Hall.

The arts precinct in the city is the perfect place to grab a pre- or post-theatre meal and The Grill at CASINO CANBERRA is an ideal option for this.

Sitting among the capital’s major sights in Parkes are the restaurants the politicians and public servants call their own, and THE LOBBY Restaurant and THE GINGER ROOM both pride themselves on top service.

You’ll find modern Australian cuisine prepared all across Canberra: Turkish fare in BARTON, Pekinese cooking in KINGSTON, outdoor dining in BRADDON, and a range of international dishes in the city.

Just keep in mind it’s wise to book ahead and to check hours of operation as Canberra’s restaurants have

a reputation for early nights — many winding up service by 9.30pm. However you can always join the late night spirit at KING O’MALLEY’S IRISH PUB.
