Big Bear-Oak Glen Tour
San Gabriel Valley Region Conducted its Big Bear-Oak Glen Tour on Saturday, 10 September 2016. We
had spectacularly clear skies for our trip into the mountains. The tour drew 29 people and 15 Porsches
including two white 1968 912s (one coupé and one Targa). Starting at the Coffee Klatch by the 57

Freeway in San Dimas we headed East on the freeways then climbed Route 18 (Rim of the World
Highway) overlooking the Los Angeles Basin.
1968 912 at "Red Rock Wall" Vista on Rt. 18
After a “photo opportunity” along Rt. 18
we continued to lunch at The Pines
Lakefront in Big Bear Lake.
It was the first day of Oktoberfest in Big
Bear so the menu included wild game
dishes and we had some German Music.
The owner spoke with us—it turned out
he’d owned two classic Porsches (before
they were classics) including a 1968 912
Targa like one of the cars on our tour.

After lunch we continued on our way to
Oak Glen along one of Southern
California’s best—and least known—scenic drives: Rt 38 through woods and mountains down to
Yucaipa. After crossing Onyx Summit, the highest highway pass in Southern California our Porsches
coasted down the mountain at (roughly) the speed limit.

The tour concluded at Parrish Pioneer Ranch where they were very helpful with our choosing apples.
Two of our members sampled their “Apple Crisp à la Mode” which looked like a meal in itself.

US firm Liberty Media buying Formula One
Formula One is being bought by Liberty Media, a U.S. company that invests in entertainment and sports,
for $4.4 billion.
There will be continuity, with Bernie Ecclestone remaining the chief executive officer of F1. Ecclestone
said he is optimistic Liberty has the resources, expertise and outlook to drive the growth of F1 —
particularly in the United States.
Liberty said it has initially purchased a minority stake of 18.7% for $746 million. A buyout is expected to
be completed by March 2017. The company says the deal values Formula One at $8 billion, including
debt.
Asked about challenging NASCAR’s supremacy in the U.S., Ecclestone said: “They are the people that
should be concerned, of course.”

New Record Porsche 550 Spyder Sale: $ 6,104,365!
From Hannah Elliott at Bloomberg:
At Bonhams Goodwood Revival auction Saturday afternoon, an original 1956 Porsche 550 Spyder set a
world record by selling for £4,593,500 (US$6,104,365). Said Bonhams Director James Knight: “The top
lot of the auction is an icon of 1950s sports car design. … [It] is so original that you could travel back in
time 60 years and find it in much the same condition. It’s exactly how a 550 would have looked, smelt,
and felt like when James Dean famously purchased his example back in 1955.”

Oktoberfeste
Oktoberfest began as the celebration of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s (later King Ludwig I5) marriage
to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on October 17, 1810.6 The Bavarians enjoyed the party, but
decided that October was too cold, so they moved it to September. Oktoberfest seems to combine well
with German cars (wenn Sie nicht zu viel trinken Bier).
There are lots of Oktoberfeste to choose from:
182nd Oktoberfest in München, 17 September through 3 October 2016

5 Ludwig I was not “Mad King Ludwig”—that was his grandson, Ludwig II. Ludwig I was essentially overthrown in 1848 shortly after he attempted to tax beer. 6 From wikipedia.org 7 The first athlete disqualified from the Olympics for doping was a Swedish modern pentathlete who had “two beers” to “calm his nerves” before the pistol shooting portion at the 1968 Olympics. 8 Not to be confused with the Original Dirndljäger.
