Femme Accroupie

signed and dated with edition ‹A.BABsOUs 72 8/8› (on the side)bronze sculpture (black and blue patina) This work is edition eight of eight45 x 24 x 28 cm.Executed in 1972.

«His work did not come as a result of an intense emotion, nor as dabbling with the unknown, to reach a larger unknown of abstract empty in content, protected by a decoration that fascinates, but does not produce.

He is the successor of an experience, and from this concept he dealt with the stone, the wood and the aluminum. And with a lot of nods, dreams and desires, he was able to access the architectural path thanks to a free technique that is not subject to calculations. And without the absolute, he was able to write a language that is not confined in one direction and maintain its balance, despite all the differences and tangible phenomenon. This is the language of modernity; modernity of form and content, and both of them complement each other to show the work in harmony and coordination, with a clear view to all. So each part will not be independent from another part; it will form one unit to make sense to its existence.

This work of art is translated with a lot of passion that gives the reader the sense to understand the shapes of the sculptures, and makes him feel that he can reach the heart of the objects.»

From cynically drawn figures to symbolic stiIll lifes many of Youssef Abdelke’s series contain commentary about the conflict in Syria. During the war, he explained,

«I think all the works in one way or another try to express the concerns and emotions of the ordinary Syrian citizen amid this huge river of blood.»Born in Qamishli, Youssef Abdelke (1951) graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Damascus University and received his PhD in Fine Arts from Paris XIII. Working in styles wither gestural or realistic, he uses different techniques such as printmaking – engraving on copper or zinc plates – or drawing with pastels or charcoal on paper to create works filled with symbolic elements that infer the violence of war.

Abdelke’s works can be found in numerous private collections and museums, amongst which are the British Museum, Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, the Amman Museum of Modern Art and the National Museum of Kuwait.

Born in yerevan, Armenia, Avetis Khachatrian graduated from the Faculty of Wood Carving at yerevan Art College and the Faculty of Visual Arts in Panos Terlemezian Arts College in 2006. A figurative artist, Khachatrian views the subjects in his work like members of his family, stopping to chat to them when walking past the canvas, seeing them in a dream and missing them when they are sold. simultaneously, he admits to seeing something of himself in his characters, while explaining that he is recreating the fairy tales of his childhood in his work. Brimming with vibrant colours, his caricature-like subjects are characteristically depicted in action, whether cycling, gardening or enveloped in a family hug, providing audiences with a hint of their intimate feelings, longings and dreams. A member of the Artists Union of Armenia, Khachatrian clinched first place at the Winterfest Armenia festival in 2009. he has exhibited extensively in recent years, in both group and solo shows, at galleries in Lebanon, Armenia, Russia, the Us, Malta, Italy, Kuwait and Austria.

This scene of Martyrs’ square before the extensive regeneration work that saw it transformed into today’s downtown Beirut is typical of the way in which Martin Giesen takes an iconic setting, detail or landmark and captures it on canvas at a moment in time, juxtaposing elements from the past and present. here, the audience is presented with a neglected space, littered by untended undergrowth, but brimming with potential, while a rusty pole unkindly cuts across the iconic Rivoli Cinema building, which was demolished in the 1990s. A billboard atop the building provides the only hint of colour, while the Martyrs’ Monument to the left of the painting, which was damaged in the civil war, and then dismantled and restored, tells its own story.

Jean BoGhossian (leBanese, B. 1949)

Untitled

signed; dated with dimensions (on the reverse) acrylic and pigment on canvas187 x 184 cm.Painted in 2016.

Us$ 18,000-25,000provenance:Private Collection, Beirut.

Born in Aleppo, Jean Boghossian is an abstract, multidisciplinary artist of Armenian descent, known for using fire and smoke on his works. Boghossian studied Economics and Sociology at Saint Joseph University (USJ) in Beirut, while working for the family jewellery business. In 1975, he moved to Belgium to escape the civil war in Lebanon. Settled in Brussels, Boghossian enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts, Boitsfort, while continuing to oversee the family business. Boghossian is one of only a small number of artists who uses the method of burn degradation on his canvas, choosing to withdraw the torch at whatever point he feels is right. He also applies fire to other media, such as paper, books and even furniture, producing fissures, cracks and perforations on the pieces.

Boghossian works across a range of media that spans watercolour, oil, charcoal and acrylics. Defying categorisation, he uses a variety of techniques and also sculpts in wood, clay, polystyrene and bronze. He set up the Boghossian Foundation with the support of his father and brother in 1992. Boghossian has exhibited extensively, with recent solo and group shows held at: Ayyam Gallery, Dubai (2018); Art Abu Dhabi (2017, 2013); 57th Venice Biennale (2017); Beirut Exhibition Center (2015, 2011); Fondazione Palazzo Albizzini Collection Burri, Città di Castello (2015); and Villa Empain - Boghossian Foundation, Brussels (2014).

rafiC Charaf (leBanese, 1932-2003)

Baalbeck

signed in Arabic (lower right)oil on canvas47 x 56 cm.Painted in 1953-1954.

Us$ 10,000-15,000provenance:Private Collection, Beirut.

This piece by the late Lebanese painter Rafic Charaf features a typically unfettered rural landscape scene in which the viewer, looking in, is invited to follow the path at the forefront of the work as it twines round, disappearing between two seemingly snow-covered hills. Trees and a fence edge the route, but the artist’s use of soft shades of brown and green ensure they add to the setting without dominating it, blending subtly with the pale blue and white hues of the sky and hilltops. Only the sky shows signs of activity, with a hint that winter weather is disrupting a scene otherwise marked by stillness and calm.

Born in Baalbeck in 1932, Charaf studied at the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts (ALBA), before obtaining a scholarship from the spanish government to attend the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de san Fernando in Madrid. Back in Lebanon, he carved a reputation as a leading member of the first generation of modernist painters, displaying versatility in his work, which is widely viewed as relaying many autobiographical aspects of his life over the years. he experimented with a range of media, including charcoal for his depictions of the Lebanese Civil War and wood, mixed-media and gold-leaf work, as evidenced in his Byzantine Icons. he later became synonymous with transforming traditional handicrafts into high art. Charaf’s work is widely exhibited. he also taught locally for many years, before passing away in 2003.

“Each color has its own climate, creates its own particular world; inviolate, each color speaks with quiet seduction.”- Helen Khal

Born in Egypt to a Greek father and French mother, Antoine Malliarakis Mayo is known for producing intriguing paintings with a dreamlike quality. Mayo moved to Paris in 1924 with the aim of studying architecture, but after becoming acquainted with several members of the surrealist movement, including its pioneer André Breton, alongside René Crevel, Robert desnos and Man Ray, he chose to focus instead on painting. Mayo began exhibiting his work, participating in a show in 1929 at the Galerie des Quatre Chemins with the Italian, Greek-born artist and writer Giorgio de Chirico, but left Paris for Egypt at the beginning of the economic crisis in 1934. he later returned to France and, as well as painting, carved out a successful career as a theatre and cinema costume and scenery designer. Landmark shows included a solo exhibition at the dina Viemy Gallery (1948), participation in a surrealist collective at the Charpentier Gallery (1964) and a major retrospective at the Annunziata Gallery, Milan (1972-73). An exhibition of his work at the Institut Français, Athens in 1983 marked the first time that his work was shown in Greece.
