TeacherTeacher’’s Notess Notes

1. “Nine Men’s Morris” is an existing game that the students will claim as their own bycustomizing the board and playing pieces. They can also modify the rules if theywish (this is optional and perhaps better for older children).

2. You may want to cut out some regular game boards (TEMPLATE – PAGE 2) andhave the children play the game in pairs. You can print out rules for the gamefrom the Internet. Advanced students or older children can try to figure out thegame on their own by reading the rules. For younger students you can show themhow to play and then let them try it on their own.

3. The main task will be for the student to create a new theme for this classic ancientgame. Some examples could include, “Aliens”, “Flower Power”, “Soccer”,“Candy”, “Scary!”, “Monsters”, “Fashion”, “Dancing”, “Music”, “Pets”, etc.

4. Your students can make their own version of the game in pairs or small groups. This activity can be used for one lesson or as project work over several lessonplans. As a project, the students can be given “chunks of time” in each lessonover several weeks. You should give them a plan of what they have to do in each“chunk of time”. A calendar with a schedule of activities will help the studentsstay focused.

5. After completing the project, your students could present their games to otherclasses or to the whole school. The games could also be displayed in the schoollibrary. Other students can play the games and perhaps even vote on theirfavorite version.

6. This game activity requires careful planning and preparation. It can be used as aquick activity or a longer project-based activity.

7. Use your imagination and come up with your own lesson plan/plans. ENJOY!
