Director’s Message by Malcolm McIntyre
If you didn't make it to the Going Retro show at Pomona this year, mark it now for your calendar next year. The weather was nice and there were even more cars and camp-ers than there were last year. We won't be having our regular business meetings for the next two months. I would like to do a quick run through of any topics of interest anyone has
since we won't have an October meeting due to the National Tour.
Ed Note: Info page below. September 9th is our annual club picnic starting at 11:00 at Mike and Patricia Kozubek’s house, 5815 NE Shaffer Road. Bring a side dish or dessert. Do NOT do what was published in the last Starterator and bring a desert. Sorry Rich. The club will provide meat
and drinks.
Speaking of tours, our next Drive & Eat is Sunday Sept 24th, hosted by Kevin Stilley and will be covering Riley County historical sites. We'll meet at the Union Station depot in Manhattan at
10:00.
Happy Motoring! – Malcolm

*Ford’s light-duty truck line had all-new styling on top of the new-for-1965 chassis with twin-I-Beam front suspension. Trucks with the longer 8’box, as shown above, had a two inch stretch to the frame for ‘67, giving a new and longer 131” wheelbase, which aided in Ford’s new smoother ride. It was the longest wheelbase of all it’s competitors except International Harvester which had it’s
equal in the 1100B series. Ford’s F-series line came with new interiors, and optional equipment that rivaled a ‘67 Ford passenger car. The base price for the F-100 shown above was $2,273. Another $225 bought the Ranger package with all the trim shown above, plus $36 for whitewall tires, and $23 for hubcaps. The 240 CID Six was standard, and the 300 Six was $97. A 352 CID V8 was $133.

Above is the 1967 Ford Bronco Wagon which was in its 2nd year on the market. It would
be sold with some changes through the
1977 season.
Below is the 1967 Ford Econoline pickup, its last year on the market.
Below is the 1967 Ford Ranchero in its first year based on the mid-sized Fairlane. The ‘Bed’ portion is the same as the 1966 Falcon Ranchero, but with Fairlane trim. The 1966 Falcon and 1967 to 1969 Fairlane Ranchero (and Station Wagons) used the same 113” wheelbase.
Back to School: Don’t Look out Just for Children, Look out for Everyone
Students represent the greatest risk on the road today. I do not know what is being taught in Driver’s Training in schools, but it is not enough. We have the advantage of Heartland Park and this could be utilized to teach driving skills under pressure and under bad weather to help stu-dents learn to handle the elements. Speed is the number one element of driving, either too fast or too slow, with special attention to off and on ramps. When someone crosses three lanes in front of you to enter or exit, they should be busted for reckless driving. The same goes for the
KTAG Lane.
Students should also be taught break down safety situations such as flat tires, running out of gas, running into a ditch, and how to help someone in those situations too. This includes what to carry in the car in case of emergency and how to use it. Complete Auto Maintenance should be included to help students develop an appreciation for the four thousand pounds of vehicle they are riding around in. Friends travelling with them sometimes encourage bad behavior while in a group in a car. Too many cooks can definitely spoil the broth, “You can make it through that inter-
section, just go for it!”
Motor Blow
It has been confirmed that synthetic oil provides 50% better protection than conventional oil. Wouldn’t it be fun to try two exact engines, one using synthetic oil and the other conventional, to see how they would test
out? Maybe next summer.
..........Car Buzz.......... by Bob Vukas
The Sunflower Region of the CHVA held their August meet-ing on Friday the 11th at Lynn and Sue Anderson’s in Olathe, KS.
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 by Malcolm McIntyre. There were 14 mem-bers present. Don Beck gave the treasures
report. The report was approved as read.
Malcolm discussed up and coming events: Going Retro Car Show pre registration, Cruisin' the Capital -Tom Plemons has 18 reserved spaces, and the 15th of this month is the deadline for 2017 National
Tour registration.
Sunflower Region Annual Picnic is Septem-ber 9th at Mike and Patricia Kozubek’s house, 5815 NE Shaffer Rd in Topeka. Please bring a side dish or dessert, meats and drinks provided by the club. Mike has
some events planned!
Sunday, September 24th, is the Riley County, KS Historical Sites Drive ‘n Eat
Tour. Meet at the Union Pacific Depot in Manhattan at 10am. A fun day of sites and
eats is planned.
There will be no October meeting due to
the National CHVA Tour.
September Newsletter deadline with be September 3rd. October newsletter dead-line will be a little early due to the National Tour also so plan your article deliveries
accordingly.
Malcom and Sherry McIntyre shared the Liberty Memorial Car Show report. It was a great show with over 400 cars and around 3500 attendees. Something to think about for next year as it is going to be an annual
event.
The Hostetler Auto Museum, Shipshewana, Indiana, with it’s large Hudson collection might not succeed financially. If you want
to see it you might want to go soon.
Rich Gibbs shared plans for caravanning to CHVA National in Las Vegas. Will probably leave on Saturday 9/30 and spend 3 nights
on the road. Rich is working on the route. Malcolm will work with Rich on ho-
tels.
Rich also brought the CHVA membership application he designed to fit into the new CHVA brochure. Looked great and VERY professional, except for the line that we needed a magnifying glass to read. That discussion brought on lots of laughter and discussion. Rich is going to enlarge that type and simplify the terminology. Thanks Rich, it does look professional and easy to
carry around.
Meeting was adjourned and we enjoyed the Anderson’s 50th Wedding Anniversary cel-ebration with cupcakes and ice cream with praline sauce and their slideshow of 50 years of life and cars followed by lots of fun
conversations.

1959 Chevrolet Impalas were the favorites at the Going Retro Show. Rangers' Choice was the Impala owned by long-time Sunflower Region CHVA mem-ber Dale Schneider. FORD TRUCKS Meet the new
FORD TRUCKS!
Ford’s truck line for 1942 was very popular. With light-duty 1/2-ton,
3/4-ton and one-ton models availa-ble in a 40-horsepower 4-cylinder
line (Model 2N), this was the “Super economy 4”. A Model 2NC (1/2-ton) Chassis only was $568, a
Pickup was $692, a Stake Truck $760, and a Panel sold for $791.
For $5 more, the 90-horsepower 6-cylinder engine was available as
the Model 2G in most of the same twenty variations of Chassis mod-els, Chassis & Cab, Pickup, Plat-form, Stake, Panel, or Sedan De-
livery in 1/2-, 3/4 or 1-ton capacity.
Twenty dollars over the 4-cylinder models, purchased the famous 90-
horsepower Ford V8 engine. These were Model 21 and availa-ble in most of the same variations as above. A 100-horsepower V8 was available for Chassis only up
to 1-1/2 tons. Some 1-1/2 ton models were also available with the 90-hp Six and V8 engines.
All 1/2-ton pickups were built on the new 114” Commercial car chassis mentioned to the right.

1942 LINCOLN
“In every respect, Lincoln for ’42 is a worthy product of the great Lincoln plant...home of
precision manufacture.”
With a new front-end design, and low-ered bodies, the 1942 Lincoln was a
unique combination of past and future. The Lincoln 306 CID V12 engine with 120-horsepower continued to be Lin-
coln’s sole engine at a time when other competitors had gone to using mostly
eight-cylinder engines. Packard dropped their V12 after 1939, and Ca-
dillac discontinued their V16 after 1940. A 3-speed transmission was standard, available with an automatic overdrive
for $50, or Liquamatic transmission for $60. The styling changes of the 1942 Lincoln was intentionally meant to be-
come closer to Mercury, as the two divisions were planned to merge later.
1942 Lincoln models remained the same as last year with the Zephyr of-
fered as a 3-passenger Coupe for $1,748, Club Coupe or 4-Door Sedan priced at $1,801, plus a convertible
priced at $2,274. Custom trim was $90 on the Coupe, and $100 extra except
on the Convertible.
The Continental continued to be availa-ble as a Coupe or Cabriolet, each
priced at $3,174. And in Lincoln tradi-tion a Custom 8-passenger Sedan for $3,117 or Custom 8-passenger Limou-
sine for $3,248 were offered.
6,563 1942 Lincoln’s were built.
