This year, I was on the receiving end of said question by said people … “Would you consider going to Haiti with us?” Truth be told, this question hit me right in the gut because it put me right on the hook. “Yes” has always been my go-to response when someone has asked me to do something (as long as the thing being asked of me was not immoral or illegal or both). On the other hand, I worried about how I would handle being away from my husband and kids for 11 days with only limited E-mail communication. How would I survive a third-world country without having a meltdown – I realize this sounds a bit extreme, but folks, I don’t even like camping… like… AT ALL!!! How would my tender heart deal with being exposed to a level of poverty I had never before come close to experiencing? Obviously, one hand (the one that sided with me staying in my first-world comfort zone with my family and my stuff) was more heavily-weighted than the other. Convicting Questions “Would you consider going to Haiti with us?” This was the question asked of me by a couple of people who I would consider to be not only passionate about Haiti / Children Of The Promise, but also veteran annual missionaries to the third-world country. They can’t help but ask others to join them as they faithfully serve the Kingdom, and ultimately God, in this way. Staff’s Perspective

(continued) Finally, the week before Christmas, I asked God for a clear answer and a mere 2 ½ hours later, He was… crystal clear. I was going to Haiti! Nerves, panic and tears ensued. I had no idea what He had in mind, but I knew without a doubt that He wanted me to go, so I committed to going in a spirit of obedience (and only obedience). Also, I warned those going with me to pack their floaties in case I cried a flood (which if you know me on a remotely personal level, you know this to be a very real possibility). Fast forward to our second day in Haiti. There was a flip calendar by the sink in our bathroom – Billy Graham’s Hope For Each Day: An Inspi-rational DaySpring Daybrightener. I read it every day as I brushed my teeth. On this second day in Haiti, it said this:

We still wrestle with the same problems that preoccupied Plato and Aristotle centuries ago: Where did we come from? Why are we here? Where are we going? … But the Cross boldly stands against the confusion of our world, a beacon of hope in the midst of darkness and doubt. In the Cross, Christ not only bridged the gap between God and us, but there we find the an-swers to life’s deepest questions … Never underestimate what Christ did for us through the Cross. By it our salvation was won, and by it our lives – and our world – can be transformed. What difference does the Cross make in your life?

Time for full disclosure. Remember how I said that “yes” has always been my go-to response when someone has asked me to do something? Well that is only partially true. “Yes” HAS been my go-to response when some human has asked me to do something. But, to the God who loves me so much that He sent His one and only Son to earth in human form to die an unimaginable death to save me from myself, I am sorry to say that my re-sponse has all too often been “no”. As I read the inspirational daybrightener for February 9th, all of a sudden my “yes” to Haiti (and to God) made sense! I was compelled to say “yes” because of the power of the Cross! How could I say “no” if I really believe what Jesus accomplished for me at the Cross? How can I ever say “no” to Him … ever again? The first ques-tion: “Would you consider going to Haiti with us?” moved me to go to Haiti this time. But, I do believe that this second question spoke to me through the power of the Holy Spirit and will continue to move me to be a witness in the Jerusalem, and in the Judea and the Samaria, and to the ends of the earth that God has given me to im-pact (Acts 1:8). So, now it’s your turn to be on the receiving end of this question…

WHAT DIFFERENCE IS THE CROSS MAKING IN YOUR LIFE?

Consistory News & Notes / Spotlight On: Consistory

In an attempt to acquaint the congregation with our church leaders, we will give a brief profile of one elder and one deacon each month. This month we feature…. Elder Jim Bonnecroy—”My name is Jim Bonnecroy. I’m one of your second year elders. I have been ecstatically married to Leanne ( Mrs. B.) for 27 years. I have 2 children. Children’s Worship for March—Jesus Dies and Is Raised

Children’s Worship is offered 3 times/month and is designed for 3 year

olds – Kindergarten-aged children. The children gather with families in the Sanctuary for the first part of the

morning worship services. During the pre-sermon hymn the children move to the lower level for their story and

prayer time. Children may be picked up from the lower level at 10:30 AM.

In February, Children’s Worship will be offered on the following dates: March 6th, 13th and 20th

What is your passion? Whatever it is, we can probably

match it up with a need here at FRC. Just contact the

church office (737-4909) or a staff member and let us know

how your heart desires to impact the Kingdom.

All women are invited to the Women’s Lenten Brunch,

Saturday, March 19th, 9:30 AM, Fellowship Hall. Pastor Mark & Suzanne Haverdink will be speaking.

FRC News / Appreciation Thank you to the host of volunteers and musicians who made the night of music benefitting the Landegents a possibility. So many people using their gifts to praise the Lord—a taste of heaven! Miracles still happen—we have seen it in the past few weeks in our daughter Shellies' life. After being in the hospital for 20 days because of a brain bleed, Shellie is on the road to near complete recovery. A special thank you to the pastors and the whole congregation for prayers and concerns for her. We praise God for His miraculous healing power. To God be the glory!

Rog & Dianne De Haan We say thank you to Pastor Mark for his visit, and to Pas-tor Tim for his kind words of encouragement in the recent passing of Rog’s sister. Thank you, church family, for your cards, prayers, visits, food and other acts of kind-ness. It has been greatly appreciated!

Rog & Marilyn Jordan What a wonderful blessing it is to be part of a loving fami-ly! Not only a physical, blood-related family, but a loving church family. We have been so touched and encour-aged by all the cards, food and visits from so many of you. And what a blessing all of you drivers were to us, transporting Dan to Sioux City in the months of December and January, despite some inclement weather and “iffy” roads. Your love and care for us has changed us — has made us realize how we need to show our faith through simple acts of love and compassion. Thank you, FRC

family, for making us better people. God bless you!

Dan & Nancy Landegent Thank you for the many thoughts and prayers when Levi was born. We are very blessed to have such a loving and caring church family where we feel welcomed and loved. Thanks for the gifts given to us for the baby shower. We are very grateful to have a church that will help us bring Levi up knowing who Jesus is. We are ex-cited to have Levi be part of children’s programs as he grows. Thanks for everything!

Keith & Andrea Vanden Brink Once again, thank you for your cards and expressions of sympathy after the death of our brother-in-law, Mert Vander Broek. Thank you, too, to Tom and Pastor Mark & Suzanne for their visits. Knowing all the ways our church family and friends are with us makes the way a little easier.

talks about chasing after God rather than dwelling on chasing boys/girls to find a mate.

Family DVD Not Today—(Dove approved) - This film takes place in India, and shows the power of

getting involved on behalf of someone less fortunate. It’s impossible NOT to be moved by this film. The title comes from what a father has to say to his daughter some days when she wants to know if they get to eat.

Fiction Deadlock # 3—DiAnn Mills Detained—Don Brown The Trouble With Patience—Maggie Brendan Undaunted Hope #3—Jody Hedlund Thank you to those of you who sup-ported this year’s mission trip to Hai-ti / Children of the Promise through prayers, or physical or monetary donations.
