JOHN’S JARGON

Hi again from the pen of your President. Well another quiz night has been and gone and although a struggle this year to get “bums on seats” the numbers were well down however it did make the night much easier to manage. Although designed as a wet season activity and not a fundraiser, we did net $583.00 from the night so thank you to those for their great support. We did put to Auction a genuine NASCO spare parts manual (1948-1968) along with a 20 litre drum of Caltex oil however they failed to get a satisfactory bid on the night but were sold a few days later for $150 – a bargain for the purchaser. Tonight your committee has met to consider the future of this great night and it was agreed that it will continue as a wet season activity for members because those that attend have an absolutely great fun night as evidenced by all the fantastic comments by everyone as they leave. We are still in negotiations for our container site at Hidden Valley. The visit to the Auto Evolution Centre has proven a big hit with over 40 people responding to the club email address and Facebook so I look forward to seeing you all on the 24th March.

The April event will be at Ultra Fast Karts at Hidden Valley on 28th April. This will be a great day for those “wannabe” petrol heads and spectators alike. See you at Auto Evolution Centre on the 24th. Happy Motoring

“All the Goss”

NAMSC track day was huge success with around 65 cars taking advantage in the break of the weather to enjoy hot laps of the Hidden Valley circuit. Alas there were only a couple of Classic cars represented. James Faraone’s GT looked awesome hurtling down the track at 200kph and Adam Gibson’s HQ Monaro clocked up 70mph down the main straight, not bad for a 173 and trimatic!!!!

This NASCO parts catalogue was donated to the club by

Peter Grice. The cover and the first couple of pages are a little ratty but the rest of the catalogue is in pristine

condition and has incredible detail on all the early models. It was put up for auction at the quiz night but passed in at

$90. Later Ian put in an offer of $150 and it was accepted with a 20 litre drum of Caltex oil thrown in.

Powercruise is just round the corner and tickets are on sale now!!!. As last year the club will be setting up the marquee for a bit of shade for members throughout the weekend. While it’s not a club sanctioned event for CRS it is something all petrol heads need to do. It’s a driving event although you can come as spectator, do an induction, get a wrist band and come for a cruise in your mates car…..

This photo came from facebook and I just had to share it with you all. That Guitar looks awesome and is a fantastic addition to the car….

CHCC News March 2013 4

Once again the Classic Holden Car Clubs annual Quiz Night

was a huge success with over 70 people sitting down for a night of fun and entertainment. Apart from the usual trivia

questions the night is broken up with the ever popular "Heads and Tails", lucky tickets, lucky chair number, What

am I's, and brain teaser competitions. It all meant prizes galore for everyone. There were even auctions on the night

and although the NASCO parts manual was passed in there

was certainly something for everyone.

On a personal note I had booked a table when the call fist went out and on the day four people from my table pulled

out. After a few last minute phone calls I got my "Ring In's"

to make up a table all worthy for 'who wants to be a millionaire'. Its thanks to Rodney, Tracy, Aaron, Dave and

Amber that we done so well on the night. Dubbed "Wilko's Warriors" we were in the lead at one stage and a few more

rounds saw us neck and neck with the "Dabblers" who finally

won the night by two points. If our table was anything to judge by everyone had a blast.

Winners; 1st Lucky ticket, Nicole Kennedy prize. 1st Heads

n Tails, Colin Johnson. Lucky Chair, Ian Bruckshaw. What

am I, Wilko Van Syl. Name the Flag, Team Coates. Brain Teaser, Nick Coe. 2nd Head & Tails, Teal Coe. 2nd Lucky

ticket, Mick Caldwell. 3rd Lucky ticket, Cynthia Brideson. Rare Spares Tail lights, Bardsleys Barbell's. 4th Lucky ticket

Rex Hales. NAQA John Hockings mob. Outright winners Dabblers.

Sponsors; Shannons, Supercheap, Rare Spares, Battery Specialists, T Bars Cars, Caltex, NT Fridge Seals, Jewel

Distributors, Tyre Power and Motorsports NT. Many thanks got to the Judges panel, Steve Moller and Ian

and Pam Campbell (who also spent months preparing the

questions), George Shepherd for keeping score and making up the competion sheets and John Palamountain for

magnificent job as MC.

CHCC News March 2013 5

It just goes to show that old Holdens go anywhere, they were built tough to handle the Aussie outback, lets face it you 4WD’s were a little thin on the ground back in the days of the HR. Denis Hannah isn’t afraid to get his HR in the rough stuff either, here’s his account of a recent trip to the Kimberley’s.. I was employed as a 'Ranger / Guide'[they called us 'Rangers cos we did a range of things]' at El Questro for the 2008 season, and I travelled the eastern end of the Gibb river road quite regularly, and did cross the Pentecost a few times, going as far as Home valley station. I regularly met with people who had come right through in a variety of different ways, and I badly wanted to see what was at the other end, and see the 'Staircase to the Moon' in Broome. I had a brief window of opportunity in October 2010.

It was a case of "Do it quickly, or not at all". I arrived in Kununurra Thursday evening with a foreign body in my eye. I went to the Hospital there, and 30 minutes later I was sorted, but in no state to drive on. So I spent the night at a backpackers hostel, and went on in the morning. I spent the Friday night at Windjana Gorge, having ruined 3 tyres, and having only 2 spares. The Rangers had a couple of spares for their trailer, so they loaned me one, the catch being that I had to take it from their wheel, and fit it to mine. Which I did. I could only buy a secondhand tyre in Derby, but that was better than none and gave me a spare. We arrived in Broome mid afternoon, and saw a sign "Cable Beach" That was the first stop, and the swim was awesome.. Next stop was Roebuck Bay Caravan Park, which is right beside the old jetty, from where you view the 'staircase'.. However, there was a cloud cover, and no staircase to be seen. Bummer. Not much happened Sunday, and Monday was the Queens Birthday public holiday. And I badly needed 2 new tyres.. So I was stuck in Broome. Believe me there are much worse places to be stuck. It was awesome... But I had to be back at work 1300 hrs Wednesday. And I was, leaving Broome at 1900 [7pm] Tuesday. And you lose 1 ½ hours at the border.

Moving forward to 2012, I wanted to stop at as many features as I could. We did a 3 hour cruise on Lake Argyle, looked around the sights of Kununurra, and then went on to Emma Gorge, which is part of El Questro. It was only open from 0700 to 1000, but that was OK. Zebedee Springs was next, the on to the Station. We had only been there 10 minutes when the manager found me, and I asked him how he knew I was there. He said that he had looked out the window, and saw my car.. I was greeted like a long lost brother, was given free Park permit, and free campsite. We were made most welcome. Next day we headed off, crossed the Pentecost River, and spent some time at Home Valley. There are some stunning views of the 'Fingers' of the North Cockburn Ranges to see. From there we headed west again, to the Kalumburu turnoff, and then north to Drysdale River Station. The road was quite good. Not a lot was happening, as they were in the process of closing for the 'Wet".. We camped at 'Miners Pool' which was most pleasant, and the only place we were allowed to have a campfire, as W.A. was with total fire ban. As much as I would have liked to go on toward Kalumburu, I had to watch the fuel supply. I had 4 Jerri cans, and there were other places I wanted to go. So we went back to the Gibb road, and headed West again. The road always deteriorates dramatically from the Kalumburu turnoff, as the traffic from there goes East. The road is like driving along a creek bed, and any maintenance would be seldom. This was for the next 40 miles or so, until we came to the Mt Elizabeth turnoff. From here the traffic mostly goes West. Although the general road structure improved markedly, like it was formed, and we saw some guideposts and pipes, it was still hard and stony, and hell on tyres. A big toyotary thing coming the other way hurled a big rock at me that totalled the wing mirror, and showered me with broken glass. Could easily have been the quarter glass. or windscreen.. We turned off and into "Silent Grove" and camped there. Was most pleasant.

Next morning we continued to "Bell Gorge", drove as far as we could to the car park, and walked on into the Gorge. Met up with a German couple who we had seen a few times before, and they were still squabbling. Had a swim there, it is quite spectacular.. Back to the Gibb road, continuing to Lennard Gorge, went for another swim, and had lunch. Continuing on, we came to the turnoff to Winjana so went down that road past Winjana to "Tunnel Creek". This creek goes right under the Napier Range, which seems to be mostly Limestone. We walked right through, torch very necessary. Was not good for my leather elastic sides, coming back didn't help either.. We then returned to Winjana, to camp there. Walked the Gorge, incredible numbers of freshwater crocs, and quite big.. Cane toads not there yet..

CHCC News March 2013 6

Next morning we had a visit from a lady at the campsite, and she said to me "Nothing pisses me off".. I said "Why would that be??" She said to me "You were at ElQuestro a few days ago?" Yes, I was, why would that be a problem?? She said "I saw you there, and was going to catch you, but I looked around, and you were gone.." " Well, that happens, but what is bothering you??" She replied "I have just spent 20 grand buying a secondhand Land cruiser, another 3,500 dollars having the suspension upgraded so I can drive it on this road, and you come along like you are on a Sunday drive.. Nothing pisses me off!!!"... There is a little more to this story, apparently she has a mint HR sedan at home [she is a Broome girl], and if there is a cloud in the sky, it doesn't go out of the shed.

We had another walk in Windjana in the morning, to see it in the different light. Got to Derby at lunchtime, and had a look around, and refuelled. Still had enough but not to get to Broome. First stop In Broome has to be Cable Beach, and a swim is mandatory. Magnificent flat beach, surf not brilliant, and often a long walk to it, as they have huge tides. Then to Roebuck Bay campground. We spent the next day poking around Broome and the following we had an early start to Cape Leverque. About half the distance is now sealed, leaving 57 miles of suspension destroying sand, corrugations and holes. Not much bulldust. At the start of the unsealed section, we came to a large purpose built tour bus, with passengers, about 30 seats, 4wd, stopped. I stopped also, and asked the driver if he was OK. He said "Yes thanks, I am just letting the tyres down". I replied "Why would you do that?". He said "Because, if you don't, you can't sit in it, your fillings will all fall out". I replied "Fair enough, but I won't be." We continued ahead, travelling somewhat faster, 40 to 45 mph seemed to be the ideal speed, stopping only to take some photos. Much of the road was below the surrounding landscape, not unlike driving along a creek bed. A large rainfall event would not be good... We did appreciate the sealed road when we got to it, and continued to "Black Point" which is actually a community. Had a look at a hatchery, which had at one time been well built, but now very run down. Duct tape and zip ties holding much of it together. There was a whitefella there doing work with Trochus shells, cutting and polishing, making earrings and other ornaments, and selling them. He used electric drills, saws and Dremels. Black Point is the end of the road.. You look out at the seawater rushing past into King Sound, at 14 knots. You would not want to be paddling a tinnie there..

They have 30 foot tides there, and all the water that rushes in has to rush back out, if you could harness that horsepower!!! It is truly an awesome sight, and the water is so clear..We then did a U turn going back to the Cape Leverque turnoff. The road detioriates markedly here, for about 5 miles to the cape. Windrows of sand, bulldust, and 'speed bumps'. On one occasion the sand and dust went over the top of the car, I was going a tad too fast Stopping would not have been a good idea. Was worse when someone was coming the other way, as you are climbing the windrow to avoid him, and you start to slide back to his side of the road. We got through ok, and stopped at the Kooliman resort. They had the hide to charge us $10 each for the right to walk around and explore. So we walked down to the beach, eastern side, and looked at the white sand and red cliffs, photo I have included.. Then we walked over the cape, past the lighthouse to the western side. I had to have a swim!! When we got back to the car, the bus was there, and they couldn't believe that we had come through that road..they had difficulty. But they had to, because there is no other way to get there. The coach left before we did. On the return journey, when we were on the 57 mile sandy unsealed Pindan country section, we actually overtook the same coach!!! That is what suspensions are all about..

Back to Broome that night, and Roebuck Bay. Next day looked about we were going to do a camel ride, but left it too late. went looking for the Dinosaur prints, from the ABC documentary I expected better. Was disappointing, the camel ride would have been better. Next morning my companion caught the Greyhound coach to Port Hedland, going to Coral bay. I went looking for a wrecked HR wagon, which I knew had chromed air intake vents. I offered him $10 each we settled on $20. I had a pair plated in Toowoomba recently, and it cost me $160. They did a really good job. I should have stayed longer, I regret not going to see the Flying boat wrecks, which are visible at a really low tide. Another day.. I arrived at Geike Gorge at dusk, and it was all closed. No way I was going back to Fitzroy Crossing. I found a track, which led to the bank of the mighty Fitzroy River.. Was an awesome free campsite. Next morning, after watching for awhile I went for a swim with a cake of soap. I then did the tour of the Geike Gorge, and it was well worth the effort. Quite different to Katherine Gorge. I then visited some friends who manage Christmas Creek Station, had lunch there, and chatted at length over old times. Kununurra again that night, staying at the Kimberley Crocs again, then home to Katherine.. Life now is a little mundane..
