Dear Parents/Carers

Welcome to edition 3 of Brakenhale At Home and of course the start of the summer term. Although this is the strangest start to any term, in all of our school careers, it has not stopped it being a highly productive one. This edition of Brakenhale At Home is real evidence of that.

Monday saw the launch of our new online learning resources and although there have been a few teething problems, overall the feedback has been incredibly positive. My eldest son is working his way through the Year 7 daily schedule as what is being provided is such high quality. Please do continue to contact us if we can help in any way with home learning and we will do our absolute best to support you. In addition to our everyday lessons we will also continue to send you additional resources that we think your children might benefit from. Please dip in and out of these as you see fit.

Although this crisis does mean that there is additional day to day work to undertake, please be assured that we are very focused on planning strategically for the remainder of the term and into the next academic year.

With that in mind, we have been fortunate enough to be able to recruit two new excellent additional Science teachers joining us as Seconds in Science, Mr Falconi who is joining us from Feltonfleet School and Miss Anderson from Desborough School.

A huge thank you to all parents who are eligible for free school meal vouchers, we are very aware that this has been a difficult system to access, please be assured that this is a problem with the Government provider and not with the Trust, but please continue to email the link on the website if you are still struggling to access your vouchers.

We hope you enjoy all of the articles and examples of both student and staff work in this edition and please do continue to share with us things that we can include.

I do hope that you are all keeping safe and well and managing to stick to the Government guidelines of staying at home, save the NHS and protect us all.

Fun Friday Challenge 1 – Show Your Appreciation for the NHS8

The Friday Challenge over Easter could not have been more important; by showing our appreciation to the NHS!The first Fun Friday Challenge was a great success with many of you showing your appreciation to the NHS! Well done to all who took part with many wonderful designs from thank you cards, drawings, banners, posters, poems, songs and letters thanking the NHS for all the work they do on a daily basis!There were a huge number of entries; all of amazing quality! We can see how much the NHS mean to you all. As a school we have forwarded all the entries onto the Greenshaw Learning Trust and the NHS.We had the most entries among all the schools in the Greenshaw Learning Trust, go team Brakenhale!Many house points were issued for taking part in this challenge and you can see some of the entries in the next few slides…Mr Cooper, Mrs McCrorie and the team at Brakenhale

Thank you!

Over the Easter holidays, we set a challenge to see if we could reach Eugene, USA. It is the first location of the Diamond League Athletics Competition. It was a massive 4,993 miles away.

Unfortunately, we did not make it to Eugene. However we did make it to land! (there was a moment when I thought we could have a sea landing).

Over the two weeks we managed a massive

2833.64 miles!

So it means we made it Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada.

Well done to everyone who took part, the names of everyone who contributed are on the next slide.

What have we all been up to since last time?

Garage Gyms and Coffee!

✔Mr Maye has been working on his fitness in his ‘garage gym’ – very Rocky IV

✔He says he will now be more alert next week as his stash of posh coffee has arrived!!

✔Ms Lawes has been exercising with Joe Wicks and rewarding herself with delicious home-made cake!

✔Ms Bounds has now taken up doing exercise –here she is enjoying her iced caramel coffee after her workout

✔Her daughter has learnt how to make the 3 ingredient only iced coffee, she has added a couple of extra ingredients, crushed ice and caramel syrup....tastes amazing.

✔Ms Bound’s tiktok dances are sort of improving and she has also realised she can still skip!

Mrs Clark’s Animal Snacks

✔On the second week of lockdown my son challenged me to make "an animal snack". What started as harmless fun has now turned to obsession as I find myself secretly scouring Pinterest pages for animal inspiration! I have challenged my form to send their own creations and would love to see other people's ideas and efforts! Not only has it been really fun, it has also persuaded my son that he actually really likes carrots; result!

✔Over Easter Ms Raby helped with the school effort by making scrubs and bags.

✔She hadn't used her sewing machine in years and was super proud of her efforts!

Staying Active with Miss Toofany

✔How I’m staying active: instead of climbing up the walls during lockdown, I’m running around my local area instead. Thank goodness for great weather for my 1 hour of exercise! I have had lots of lovely encouragement from Mrs Keljarrett to keep me going :)

Learning a new skill – Miss Wilhelmy

✔ I have taught myself to crochet! I've been a 'knitter' for a long time but have never been able to master the art of crochet, until now! I've definitely made up for lost time and made a LOT of different things, so here are my photographs.... I would absolutely recommend learning something like this, as it keeps your hands busy (which means I am not eating!) and is a very good mindfulness activity.

Mr George – a day of remembrance

4 years ago, on April 21st, the greatest musician (according to Mr George) to ever live passed away. In remembrance, Mr. George spent the whole day dancing and listening to the back catalogue of PRINCE!

✔Miss Toofany told us that one of our Year 11 students has been singing in front of the neighbours every week after the NHS clap.

DIY NAIL ART by Miss Appleton

Step 1:Find a hairgrip – it needs to still have a rounded end and bend it slightly to make it easier to hold.

Creating your own nail art is easy, I use my own dotting tools but it is easy to create your own nail art using a simple hairgrip!

Step 2: Paint your nails with whatever colour you like.

Step 3: Choose your polka dot/flower colours. Make sure they will show up on your background colour.

Step 4:Place a blob of nail polish on top of another bottle of nail polish or on a piece of plastic out of your recycling bin.

Step 5: Dip the hairgrip into the nail polish and simply dot this onto your nails.

To create a simple flower I make 5 dots in a small circle.

It is tricky when you first start but with practice it gets easier and easier! Until you try to do it with your non-writing hand…

““Hi Everyone! My name is Ms Carr-Jones, and I was due to start my new job as Principal First Aider at Brakenhalethis week. I am so sad not to be able to meet you

all just yet, so I thought I would use this newsletter as a chance to introduce myself.

I live in Bracknell, and I have 3 daughters. As well as this job, I am also in the Army Reserves, where I

work as a Combat Medic with a Light Cavalry Regiment. Other than all the cool (& hard!) stuff I do with the Army, in my free time, I love to get out and about exploring with my French Bulldog who’s called Reggie. He’s an absolute dude and I’d love to bring him to school with me! I’m also partial to a game of MarioKart! My job at school is to take

care of you if you feel ill or get injured, and I’m also there for you should you feel you need

someone to talk to for any other reasons. When we all get to go back to Brakenhale, please do pop your head around the Medical Room door and

introduce yourselves. I’m sure I will know quite a few of you already.

Environmentally Friendly Habits we have learnt during lockdown and plan to continueOur school Eco Club have put together examples of what they have noticed…➢ Less travel - families have realised that local parks, in walking distance are actually quite accessible, and lots

of activities can be done at home.➢ Valuing food - as its been difficult to get certain products at times, going forward appreciate and waste less

Environmental Gains & Earth DayEvery year on April 22, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.2020 marked 50 years of Earth Day. You can find out more here: https://www.earthday.org/history/Remember to focus on the importance of what the world has gained environmentally whilst we are all on lockdown!With us all staying at home and only going out in our cars when it is essential there has been a considerable decrease in pollution.Our KEY WORKER refuse collectors are continuing to do an amazing job taking away our rubbish and items for recycling, so even if you are at home you can still do your bit and recycle where possible.Don’t forget you can to recycle any old Tools for Learning and other pens – save them up and bring them to the Head of Year's office when we get back to school.Also a reminder that Mrs McCrorie is also still collecting used stamps to support guide dogs.
