Joy of Learning
• In our lessons, we design learning
experiences to develop students’
appreciation for Mathematics.
• We make the learning of Mathematics fun
by engaging our students through a variety
of activities like activity-based learning,
ICT-infused lessons, group discussions
and games, etc.
• We also make the learning of Mathematics
meaningful and relevant to students by
making connections to real-world context.

Topical Coverage
Unit 6A Topics
1 Algebra
2Fractions
• Division
3
Ratio
• Changing ratios
• Word problems with more than 2 steps
4
Percentage
• Percentage increase/decrease
• Word problems with more than 2 steps

• A spiral approach is adopted in the building up of content across the levels.
• P6 concepts and skills are built upon the P1 to P5 content. (Importance of Revision)
Topical Coverage
• Students are introduced to progressively to a variety of heuristics.
• All heuristics will be revisited at P6.
Term P6 Heuristics
1 • Draw a diagram
• Work backwards
• Look for patterns
2 • Make a supposition
• Guess and Check
3 • Logical Reasoning

• The level focus is identified based on the 5 components of the
Mathematics Framework.
P6 Level Focuses
Concepts Develop
• a good understanding of ratio and percentage concepts and
their connections to fraction and decimal concepts
• the ability to see connections between different concepts
Skills Acquire
• procedural fluency for division of fractions
• proficiency in use of calculator for numerical calculation
P6 Level Focuses
Processes • Apply mathematical reasoning and communication
• Acquire the proficiency in using ratio method for
problem solving
• Develop a good understanding of using heuristics
for problem solving
Attitudes • Develop the perseverance in solving problems
• Prepare for and manage exam effectively
P6 Level Focuses
Metacognition Moving from ‘Strategic’ learners to ‘Reflective’ learners
• ‘Strategic’ learners organise their thinking by using
problem solving strategies such as grouping and
classifying, evidence seeking & decision making. They
can apply the strategies to help them in solving problems.
• ‘Reflective’ learners are not only strategic about their
thinking but they also reflect upon their learning whilst it is
happening. They will consider the success or otherwise
of any strategy applied and then revise them where
necessary.
P6 Level Focuses
Polya’s 4 Steps
Problem Solving
Choose a strategy
• Model drawing (Key approach)
• Other heuristics (Progressive
learning across the levels)
3 Do 4 Check
1 Understand 2 Plan
• Is my Solution Reasonable?
• Can I Solve it Another Way?
P6 Key Strategies
P6 Key Strategies
• Targeted supplementary lessons conducted to revisit P3 to P5 topics concurrently to help the students recall and strengthen the concepts and skills learned
• Align and connect P3 to P5 concepts to those learned in P6 to develop a deeper understanding of Math concepts so that students will be able to apply their skills and knowledge more effectively to solve a variety of problems
• Important to build their confidence and train their speed and accuracy in problem solving
Revisiting P3 to P5 Topics
P6 Key Strategies
• Use PSLE Booklet (2016 to 2018) to familiarise students with the exam format and ensure that they stay focus in exam settings
• Use of past years’ PSLE questions (2010 to 2015) in the topical worksheets to provide sufficient practices and maintain the rigour in problem solving
• Complete P6 teachings & conduct focus lessons designed to engage students to solve problems with similar constructs during June Master Classes
• Diagnose and identify students’ areas of weaknesses from formative & summative assessment for focused intervention
Maintaining Rigour & Focused Intervention
Assessment Format (Std Math)
The table below shows the Exam Format for P6. This is the
same as the PSLE Format so that students are familiar with
it.

Home Support
• Plan with your child to revise P3 to P5 topics from now. You
may wish to purchase PSLE Guide to have an overview of
Primary Mathematics content.
• Help your child to achieve mastery and fluency in
multiplication and division facts if he/she is still not fluent and
accurate
• Monitor your child on the use of calculator only when
necessary. It is still important for them to be skilful in using
the calculator effectively for Paper 2.
• Practise solving word problems using model drawing
