“I bought this place a few months ago and I love living here. I sublet a room to Sarah, which helps with the morgage. Its compact but there’s plenty of storage for both of our things. In a year Sarah’s moving to the US for her PhD and my boyfriend might move in, which would mean we could open out the spare room and have a lovely big living space. She’d be welcome to stay at any time, we’d get a sofa bed and she can have her old room back for a holiday in London!” “The flat works for me, I have lots of gear to store and as a freelance journalist I often work from home. The living room is big enough to live and work without feeling cramped. My parents like to come to stay, they say its to see me, but I know its just it’s cheaper than a hotel! It’s not a problem though, I can pull across the folding wall and they get their own room and I can use the loo and kitchen in the night without disturbing them. I’m thinking of asking my girlfriend if she wants to move in, its big enough for us both to have space. Fingers crossed she says yes!” “Poppy loves her room, she has lots of space to play and I like it because there’s room to put all her toys away when she’s done. My room’s tucked round the corner from the kitchen and although I pull the room divide across whenever I have friends over (so I don’t have to worry about making the bed) and I leave it open when its just me, Poppy and Stan, then we have a lovely big space to hang out. Every space in the apartment has been well thought out, I got most of my furniture from IKEA and it all fitted perfectly. With Poppy growing up I like to know that I can change things around now and then.” “I’m due in a month, so we’ve recently turned our room into the Baby’s and we can have the room next to the lounge. That way we can relax on the sofa while she’s sleeping - although that might be a bit optimistic for the first few months! Who knew you needed so much stuff when you have a baby!? Thankfully there’s loads of places to hide it away until we need it. We never thought we would be able to afford a place where we would have room to start a family, so we were so excited when we found Pocket - we’re going to be very happy here.” Hannah (41) and Sarah (32) Henry (28) and Jess (7/9 Cat lives left) Amy (32), Poppy (6) and Stan (7 Dog Years) Oliver (30), Heather (29), Baby (due in a month!) and Colin (28 Dog Years) Hannah’s Room Sarah’s Room Kitchen, Living and Dining Henry’s Room WC / Shower Sofa Bed Poppy’s Room Amy’s Room Oliver & Heather’s Room Baby’s Room Inside No. 2: Henry’s large living space can be quickly subdivided with the folding acoustic wall into a living room and bedroom, which is great for when his parents come to stay Inside No. 3: Amy loves that she can put Poppy to bed and still have the living room and kitchen all to herself. Interrogating the Mayor’s Design Guide

Our Pocket Homes are all about adaptability, without any gimmicks. This includes having considered Lifetime Homes standards. The main bedroom, bathroom and doors meet or exceed the requirements, ensuring that these homes can be loved by everyone!

We imaging that moving into a Pocket Living flat should be like joining a new community. Entrances must feel welcoming but also secure, and contain post boxes and notice boards, and be a great place to bump into neighbours. Circulation must be generous and daylit, with no blind corners and corridors wide enough to wheel bikes and buggies. Amenity spaces could be either balconies or shared gardens.

The flats can be arranged in a number of ways to suit a variety of sites. We can’t wait to test our ideas on a real site!

There is lots of space for storage in our pocket home. Each room has been ergonomically designed to be a simple uncluttered space, with cupboards in alcoves. We’ve also saved space on internal wall areas and circulation without it feeling mean.
