THIS IS LEADERSHIPPhysician Relations introduced this new segment in the January Mercy Physician

Newsletter as a way to further recognize physician leaders in our community. Leadership starts with the physician, and our aim is to highlight those who exhibit leadership and work to lead Mercy’s positive growth…

Colleen Keating, MD, FAAFP, is a primary care provider at MercyCare Edgewood. She started her practice there in 1997. Since then, she has been very engaged and currently serves as a member of the MercyCare Quality and Patient Safety Committee and

MercyCare Quality Steering Committee. Most recently, Dr. Quinn announced and congratulated her on her new role as Medical Director, Physician Communications.

Dr. Keating has a great interest in adolescent medicine, dermatology, skin care, pediatrics, women’s health and weight management. She was instrumental in the start of the Ideal Protein weight-loss program throughout several of the MercyCare clinics and she continues to take an active leadership role in the oversight and new developments of the program.

Dr. Keating and her partners at MercyCare Edgewood are currently implementing 1st Five into their practice. 1st Five is a public-private partnership bridging primary care and public health services in Iowa. The 1st Five model supports health providers in the earlier detection of social-emotional and developmental delays and family risk-related factors in children, birth to 5, and coordinates referrals, interventions and follow-up. They feel it is important to ensure they are doing everything possible to catch any developmental or emotional concerns in their pediatric population.

Dr. Keating also supports her community by volunteering at the Health Free Clinic on a regular basis and teaching medical students. One of her colleagues stated she always stays very positive and goes above-and-beyond to teach her PA and medical school students.

Thank you, Dr. Keating, for your amazing leadership, your commitment to Mercy, your patients and the community.

Capital Planning for FY17Capital planning for fiscal year 2017 is complete. Capital submission requests were initially reviewed by the administrative team in February and were voted on by physician leaders at the March 3, 2016, FY17 Capital Prioritization meeting. Physician scoring is highly valued by the administrative team and we would like to thank those who attended the meeting and voted on the projects. Final decisions on the capital projects were made in June. If you have any questions about the funded projects, you may contact Physician Relations.

Foley Catheter (With Removal Protocol) UseA reason for ordering the “Insert Foley Catheter (Without Removal Protocol)” order went live as of July 11, 2016. Since indications for foley catheter placement are not being addressed when the Foley Catheter “Without” protocol is ordered, it was requested to require a reason if the order is selected. This was approved at the June 9 Medical Director Council Meeting and by Infection Prevention. Please contact Anna Helle at (319) 398-6260 or Stacy DeMoss at (319) 398-6696 with questions.

Changes in Organizational LeadershipMercy welcomes Tony DeLaney as Director of Facilities. Tony’s first day was Tuesday, July 26.

Tony comes to us with more than 30 years of career experience including both military service (U.S. Navy) and roles within private-sector healthcare. Most recently, he was

Mercy is very excited to have Tony on board. Please help us make him feel welcome!

Lisa Ridge, Critical Care Director, has left Mercy. Her service has been a tremendous asset and we will truly miss her.

In the interim period beginning August 1, Nurse Managers Heather Polhamus (Intensive Care Center) and Annie Shaffer (Cardiac Stroke Center) will report to Dawn Roberts, Interim Med Surg Director, while the Emergency Department’s Interim Nurse Manager will report to Mary Brobst, Chief Nursing Officer. Nurse Manager Brian Schultz will manage the Critical Care Float Pool in the interim and he will continue to report to Dawn Roberts.

Lisa’s committee work is being delegated as well. If you have any questions about this transitional period, please feel free to contact Mary Brobst.

Thankful Patient NotesDr. Gordon Baustian – Hi, doctor. I just wanted to thank you so much for the care that you gave me while in the hospital last week. I really felt you cared and were invested in my well-being. Thanks for being so supportive.

Dr. Imran Hassan - Dr. Hassan is THE BEST! He obviously looks out for his patients at all times. He explains things excellently including possible changes to treatment. I have full confidence and trust in him! I would recommend him to anyone. Dr. Hassan is very compassionate and I am so lucky he was my surgeon.
