Career-Tech – It’s not your parents’ “vo-ed” anymoreThe evolution from “vo-ed” to Career-Technical Education:

Thirty years ago, Career-Technical programs, typically referred to as “vocational education,” were primarily focused on teaching students a specifi c skill set to enter the job market in a pre-determined

vocation. To meet the demands of the global, 21st century workplace, this “vocational education” model has been replaced by a Career-Technical curriculum that combines hands-on, work-based

learning with college preparatory academics and technologically advanced training.

The West Shore Career-Technical District serves high school students in Bay Village, Lakewood, Rocky River and Westlake school districts. Located at Lakewood High School, West Shore Career-Technical District consistently receives high marks on the Ohio Department of Education Annual Report Card and is recognized as one of the fi nest in the state. Many of West Shore’s graduates successfully continue their education at two- or four-year colleges while others are employed upon graduation.

Students graduate with documented evidence of their academic

knowledge, technical skill and experience that will take them to the next step of their education as well as to entry level skilled employment. In addition, many of the West Shore programs offer the opportunity for students to obtain

industry credentials as a result of their mastery of the topics studied.

“The hands-on, career-oriented course was a learning process which was formative for me, and ultimately guided my choices, work ethic, and business direction.” – Mike Trebilcock, Class of 1978, Chairman & CEO, MCPc

Employers and college admission offi cers like career-technical graduates because they know they have had hands-on training and real-world experience in their chosen fi eld of interest.
