MUSQUEAM NAME FOR PRESIDENT TROTTERIn 2014, Langara installed its third President
and CEO, Dr. Lane Trotter. As part of the
installation ceremony, Musqueam gave him a
name in their language – Takaya, which means
wolf. In 2015 the President’s regalia was altered
to incorporate traditional Musqueam blanket
patterns and wolves, as designed by Musqueam
artist Debra Sparrow.

Langara and MusqueamWORKING TOGETHER
Langara acknowledges its location on the unceded traditional territory of the Musqueam First Nation, and is working
to develop strong connections between the Musqueam people and the College.
Langara was honoured to receive a name from Musqueam in their language, which means house of teachings. The word
is used to reference the advice given to a child to build their character and to guide them into adulthood.
HOUSE OF TEACHINGS
COAT OF ARMSIn 2015, His Excellency David Johnston,
Governor General of Canada bestowed on
Langara its first Coat of Arms. Among the
symbols incorporated in the arms is a bed of
river grass to acknowledge Langara’s location
on Musqueam territory, Musqueam meaning
people of the river grass. Musqueam Chief
Wayne Sparrow and Elder Shane Point were
on hand to welcome His Excellency to their
traditional territory.
MUSQUEAM NAMING CEREMONYAs part of the naming ceremony in 2016,
Musqueam gifted Langara with a rock from
one of their original village sites. The College
has placed a plaque on this rock at the centre
of campus to acknowledge our location on
Musqueam traditional territory and the
name they have given us.

of charities. He quickly emerged as a leader of the College’s Aboriginal student community – Randy is
Algonquin from Timiskaming First Nation – taking on the position of Aboriginal Liaison for Langara’s

will serve my community in the future.”

season. Since taking the helm of the program in 2012, the Falcons have been perennial
national contenders, making the CCAA National tournament three of the past five
seasons and winning a National Championship in 2013-2014. Coach Eberhardt will look
to a talented group of young players, bolstered by a number of experienced transfer
players, to return the Falcons to the National stage once again.
This will be the second season for Coach Winston Brown as the head of the
women’s basketball program at the College. The Falcons returned to the Provincial
Championships for the second year in a row and Coach Brown is looking to improve on
the teams’ post-season showing in 2017-18. The Falcons will be led by their returning
PACWEST All-Rookie team stand outs Trisha Francia and Nicola Erricson.
In the golf team’s second season back in the athletic program after a 40-year hiatus
they showed steady improvement finishing in 4th place in the conference. Coach Tom
Flockhart is excited for the continued improvement of the group and to see if stand
out Jacob Vanderpas can duplicate his outstanding season in which he was named the
PACWEST player of the year and a CCAA All-Canadian.

The 51st season in 2016 came to a spectacular close with
two Studio 58 productions, 42nd Street (that broke
box office records) and The Refugee Hotel written and
directed by award-winning author and playwright (and
Studio 58 graduate!) Carmen Aguirre. Studio 58’s 52nd
season once again offers great learning experiences
for our students and great plays for our audiences. The
classic Shakespeare comedy As You Like It which deals
with the trials and tribulations of young love will open
our season. A 100% contemporary take on the trials and
tribulations of today’s youth, Wilderness, follows. In
the New Year, the trials and tribulations of humanity
are explored in the American classic comedy The Skin
of Our Teeth. Who knows what trials and tribulations
our student writers will explore in FourPlay. With the
addition of two Risky Nights productions, we invite you
to join us for another outstanding season of theatre.
