Parkhurst, contains much material on the contemporary history of Steuben and neighboring counties, and includes papers on the organization and finances of the Urbana ·wine Company (1867-1882), the develop­ment of the First National Bank of Bath, the New York Lackawanna and V,'estern Railroad, the Portage Creek and Rich Valley Railroad, and lumbering interests in the vicinity. These papers include additional legal files [see 1946-1948 Report] of Bath, New York, attorneys Guy Humphreys :McMaster (b. 1829-d. 1887), Steuben County Judge and surrogate, and his son-in-law, John Foster Parkhurst (b. 1843-d. 1906), Judge of the New York State Court of Claims ( 1887-1901 ) and Supreme Court ( 1901-1906), and contain briefs, summonses, court orders, correspondence, accounts, and other papers relating to the settle­ment of the Perine and other estates and numerous other cases ( 1855-1901 ) ; MSS. memoranda concerning a break on the Erie Canal at Bushnell's Basin ( n.d.) and the :financing of Genesee Valley Canal improvements ( 1849-1850) ; typescript court report of a case involving the receivership of the Kanona & Prattsburg Railroad ( 1897-1899); opinions and other items pertaining to Parkhurst's judgeships; and accounts and notebooks of both men.
