Welcome to Holy Family

Welcome Ministers will be available at the Welcome Desk to walk you through the short registration process. If Sunday is not convenient for you, contact Susan Cabay at 847-274-4423. About Us
www.holyfamilyparish.org 3
Fr. Terry KeehanThis weekend we read the Parable of the Tal-ents from the Gospel of Matthew in which Jesus calls us to refl ect on the gifts we have been given and what we are doing to develop those gifts. This pas-sage comes at the end of the Gospel as Jesus
is giving the disciples and others fi nal warn-ings, prophesies and encouragement prior to his departure. He is underscoring the importance of their responsibility with what he will entrust to them, and the consequences if they neglect that important endeavor.
The Roman “talent” was any commercial good equal to 32.3 kilograms of precious metal. It was a measurement of weight that could potentially make all goods equal according to their weight – literally – in gold. Even one talent was a sizable amount of money. Notice that the servants are given amounts of talents according to their abil-ity. They had already demonstrated some ability in their work. The one who was given 5 talents doubled his gift to make 10. The one who was given 2 doubled it to make 4.The one who was given 1 was afraid and buried his money. The fi nal score is servant one -11 talents, servant 2 - 4 talents, servant 3 - 0 talents.
This weekend, our controller Matt Hower and I will be speaking at all Masses about our fi nancial position and asking you to prayerfully consider your fi nancial support of our mission here at Holy Family which is bold, ambitious and far-reaching. Every one of us benefi ts from this dynamic com-munity of ours. I am asking every one of us to support the mission fi nancially. Infl ation is a fact in all of our lives, so please consider increasing your fi nancial support because the cost of pro-viding the type of quality programs that we do here at Holy Family continues to increase. We have been given a lot here, and we have worked hard to develop what we have. Let our talents increase even more as we all work together to make our church and our world even better.
Your increased generosity will enable us to:• Continue to engage teens in their faith de-
velopment in a way that is unmatched in the
Archdiocese and beyond• Continue to provide the highest quality adult
spirituality, scripture and ongoing education programming featuring nationally recognized speakers addressing the most relevant topics
• Continue to care for and beautify our aging 155,000 square foot campus that supports every aspect of our mission
• Continue to provide a vast amount of Pasto-ral Care to the sick, dying, their families (par-ticularly funeral liturgies), the grieving, ad-dicted, alienated and so many others seeking counseling and emotional/spiritual support
• Continue to reach out to those with the most basic life needs through our PADS site for the homeless, our food pantry serving the north-west suburbs, the longest running job support program in the northwest suburbs, and our collaboration with many social service agen-cies in our community
• Continue to act in dedicated and warm com-passion, according to Catholic Social Justice Teachings
• Continue to provide a vibrant, engaging and relevant worship experience
• Continue to engage families in their faith development, creatively and passionately teaching our younger parishioners Gospel values and spiritual life lessons
• Continue to fund our day to day operational needs such as electricity, heat, cleaning ser-vices, landscape, and snow removal
Please prayerfully consider increasing your weekly giving and particularly to give electroni-cally, which helps us in its regularity and will as-sist you in managing your giving.
Please join me in welcoming Gene Garcia as our newest member of the Holy Family Staff as Director of Music. Many of you have had a chance to meet Gene as he has been one of the conductors/pianists with our music ministry in the past few months. Gene brings to us many years of experience as a professional pianist, vocalist and worship leader. His diverse experience as a leader and musician spans across the military, secular and religious communities. Gene has played in and led music programs in both Catho-lic and non-Catholic churches. He shares the mission and vision off Holy Family and I believe he will be a terrifi c addition to our community. Please welcome him warmly as he offi cially joins us this Monday, November 17.

We will gather on the evening before Thanksgiv-ing (Wednesday, November 26 at 7pm) to spend some quiet time in prayer and thanksgiving. We are extending a special invitation to the youth of our com-munity and those returning from college. This service would be a great time for families to be together before the big day of preparation and feasting. Also, this would be a great time to invite your friends and family of other religions denomina-tions to join you here at Holy Family for a Christian ecumenical prayer experience. We hope you’ll join us in the special prayerful experience.

Few people can deny the breathtaking beauty of Holy Family’s Cross of New Life.
Like all pieces of fine art, the Cross of New Life elicits powerful emotions. The cross captures the --
hope of a couple beginning their life together, joy of baptizing a new member of our community,
sacredness of our sacraments, and the solemn passage into eternal life.
Perhaps the Cross has moved you or someone you love. Only three, 33-inch, numbered, artist proofs of this magnificent piece of religious art remain. Each has been inspected by the artist and is
wrapped in its original packaging.
A 33-inch version of the Cross is available for viewing in the bookstore.
Please contact Rosemary Geisler for more information on the artist proofs.(847-907-3424) or [email protected]

Sports Fans! Spirituality Lovers (and isn’t that all of us?)! Please join our speaker, Jeanne Hess, who has combined her love of both sports and spirituality by publishing a book entitled Sportuality: Finding Joy in the Games. The 2013 season marked her 30th volleyball campaign as head coach at Kalamazoo College. Ms. Hess earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan where she played varsity volleyball for four years and a Master’s degree in Exercise Science from Western Michigan University. She ranks in the top 30 all-time winning coaches among NCAA III coaches. This evening will help participants - athletes, coaches, parents and others, think critically about competition, community, spirit, humor, religion, holiness, sanctuary, sacrifice and victory. Come for a thought-provoking and fun experience!

Annual Finance Report
Dear Friends in Christ,
The following information summarizes the financial results of our Parish for our fiscal year whichended June 30, 2014: • The results of parish operations were down from last year. Average Sunday collection was the lowest in more than 10 years and Sunday attendance continues to decrease. • Higher monetary outreach collections reflect our generosity with the sharing parish in McKee, KY and our support for those in areas affected by natural disasters totalling $55,000. Amounts were collected and paid-out in the same year. Thus, outreach expenses were higher, as well. • Memorial Donations were down from their very generous 2013 levels. • Utility expenses were higher due to the harsh winter. • At fiscal year end, $2.8 million, or 70%, of the $4 million goal for Our Families Our Faith Our Future Capital Campaign has been collected. Expenditures were made for shades and signage in FY2014. • As our Academy grows, it's finances continue to improve. Enrollment grew slightly and the Academy operating results improved as well. • The Gala continues to be an especially important event for us. We continue to rely on it to to ensure that the Academy and all other campus ministries have the wherewithal to advance our goal of lifelong learning for all. Proceeds from this year's Gala were split $35,000 to Teen and Adult learning and balance to the Academy.

The Outreach & Justice Community...off ers assistance programs, as well as ministries promoting peace and justice, respect for life and welcoming new parishioners
Catholic Social Teaching – United States Catholic Conference of Bishops
Over the next 12 months, all seven themes will be highlighted. Today, the sixth theme is presented.
The Church’s social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about build-ing a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society. Modern Catholic social teaching has been articulated through a tradition of papal, conciliar and episcopal documents. The depth and richness of this tradition can be understood best through a direct reading of these documents. In these brief refl ections, we highlight several of the key themes that are at the heart of our Catholic social tradition.
Call to Family, Community, and Participation The person is not only sacred but also social. How we organize our society-- in eco-nomics and politics, in law and policy -- directly affects human dignity and the capacity of individuals to grow in community. Marriage and the family are the central social institutions that must be supported and strengthened, not undermined. We believe people have a right and a duty to participate in society seeking together the common good and well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable. But God did not create man as a solitary, for from the beginning “male and female he created them” (Gen. 1:27). Their companionship produces the primary form of interperson-al communion. For by his innermost nature man is a social being, and unless he relates himself to others he can neither live nor develop his potential. The Church in the Modern World (Gaudium et Spes. . . ), #12 The nation’s founders took daring steps to create structures of participation, mutual ac-countability, and widely distributed power to ensure the political rights and freedoms of all. We believe that similar steps are needed today to expand economic participation, broaden the sharing of economic power, and make economic decisions more accountable to the common good. Economic Justice for All, #297

HOLY FAMILY PADS SITE Holy Family’s PADS site needs volunteers to set up, provide and serve meals, work shifts, clean up as well as offer an atmosphere of comfort and safety. There are several ways YOU can serve the homeless in our community.
1) Volunteers will be in the narthex next weekend, November 22 and 23, after masses to as-sist you with sign ups. New volunteers are required to go through a brief orientation before work-ing at a PADS site. (See number 2 below.)
2) If you have not completed orientation, go to www.journeystheroadhome.org and click on Volunteer Opportunities to fi nd the 2014-15 orientation schedule. Online sign-ups are available to all volunteers who have completed orientation.
3) Provide food for dinner, lunch or breakfast. Visit www.carecalendar.org using our own calendar ID and password listed below and feel free to sign up for food donations through the end of the season. Food can be dropped off hours, even days earlier, and prepared just prior to our guests arriving. Please feel free to pass this information along to anyone else you know that might want to donate items for our weekly PADS site. The calendar ID is 134413 and the security code is 9236.
If you have completed orientation and haven’t received an invitation to sign up for a shift online, please contact Sue Geegan at [email protected]. We always need more shift volun-teers, so please consider volunteering even if it’s just once per month.

Prayer List Requests Remembering our sick in prayer is important to the Holy Family parish community. With the person’s or relative’s per-mission, his or her name will be read aloud during the inter-cessory prayers that weekend. We will then place the name of a sick person who has recently become ill on the screens at the weekend Masses for the following two weeks. Should the person become more seriously ill at a future time, let us know and we will then follow the same procedure. ALL the sick of our parish community and our relatives and friends who are ill can we added to our Book of Prayer in the narthex and then prayed for each and every day at Masses and by the prayer groups in our parish.

The HOME MINISTRY team would like to keep people in our commu-nity aware of the services we offer. Funeral Planning Ministry
With the increasing number of funerals celebrated at Holy Family, we have been piloting a new ministry to walk with families through the days and events of a loved one’s passing. The funeral planning min-istry meets with families to plan the wake, liturgy, and cemetery services. They coor-dinate with the Mass ministers, resurrec-tion choir, and luncheon volunteers. They journey with the family in grief, so that the prayer experiences refl ect the love of the family and the faith we share in the promise of the Lord.
“I am the Resurrection and the Life. Who-ever believes in me, even if they die, will live.” Jn 11: 25
We are seeking to create four funeral plan-ning teams who will commit to serve one week a month.

“Counselor’s Comments” (A regular article from our Alexian Partnership)
“Looking for a Counselor? A Healing Ministry”It’s no secret that today’s world can be pretty overwhelming at times. There are few among us who can claim that life is always easy. For most of us, there are obstacles to overcome and challenges to face on a daily basis. And most of the time, we fi nd solutions. However, there are times when our best efforts are simply not enough. It’s part of the hu-man condition. In those situations, where do we turn? How do we resolve the confl ict or problem? Where do we start? Many people turn to the Church for guidance and support. We have begun a partnership with Alexian Brother Parish Services’ Interfaith Counseling Services. Parishioners of Holy Family Catholic Parish are especially fortunate to have professional counseling staff come right here to our church. Our Parish is one of nine satellite locations where counseling services are offered.
The services offered by this group bring an added dimension to the therapeutic process. They offer a holistic approach to counseling involving the interrelationship between mind, body and spirit. It differs from a secular approach in that therapy may be combined with spirituality and prayer. They partner with Holy Family Parish in supporting the mission of healing. They offer individual counseling, marital and family counseling.
The Interfaith Counseling Services offers a valuable service to our parish community. To learn more about their services or to schedule an appointment, call (847) 981-3514 or e-mail [email protected].

Holy Family Catholic Academy....offers an innovativecurriculum that focuses on cultivatingcritical thinking, problem solvingand teamwork.
“Hands-on/minds-on” learning begins with our youngest learners!
Life-long learning begins when curiosity is cultivated, and there is no better place to start than in early childhood education.
Preschoolers are naturally curious, and learn about their world through observation, investigation and testing--clear attributes of budding scientists.
HFCA’s teachers expand our early childhood science curriculum with engaging“in-house” field trips for our 3- and 4-year-old students.
Whether using our outdoor classroom, or welcoming guest scientists, our
“hands-on/minds-on” learning engages and challenges our
preschool students and makes learning fun!

Dr. Terry Nelson-Johnson and Fr. Terry Keehan
January 23-25, 2015 Cost: $225
www.holyfamilyparish.org
Life is a marathon. Find your “pace” through the many life, death and resurrection moments that you have experienced. We will learn from the ultimate teacher - Jesus - who ran the “marathon” that is the Paschal Mystery - from Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday. This retreat is led by two dynamic presenters - Fr. Terry Keehan and Dr. Terry Nelson-Johnson who incorporate humor, music, and engaging personal testimonies along with time for quiet reflection. Fill yourself with joy and come away strengthened for the journey of life. Terry Nelson-Johnson, D.Min. is Resident Theologian and Animator of Faith at Old St. Patrick’s Church in Chicago. In this role he has led numerous successful Beloved retreats, as well as Confirmation retreats for teens, parish missions and days of reflection. Dr. Nelson-Johnson is married and the father of two children. Fr. Terry Keehan, M.Div., M.A., Pastor of Holy Family Catholic Community, has directed parish missions, retreats, days of reflection and workshops across the nation. He has a special interest in “real world” spirituality - connecting our lives’ experiences with our faith.
