National Novena Sunday, Oct. 30 - Monday, Nov. 7

In prayerful preparation for the election Prayer to Mary, the Immaculate Conception,

Patroness of the United States

Most Holy Trinity: Our Father in Heaven, who chose

Mary as the fairest of your daughters; Holy Spirit, who

chose Mary as your Spouse; God the Son, who chose

Mary as your Mother, in union with Mary we adore your

majesty and acknowledge your supreme, eternal

dominion and authority.

Most Holy Trinity, we put the United States of America

into the hands of Mary Immaculate in order that she may

present the country to you. Through her we wish to

thank you for the great resources of this land and for the

freedom which has been its heritage.

Through the intercession of Mary, have mercy on the

Catholic Church in America. Grant us peace. Have

mercy on our president and on all the officers of our

government. Grant us a fruitful economy, born of justice

and charity. Have mercy on capital and industry and

labor. Protect the family life of the nation. Guard the

precious gift of many religious vocations. Through the

intercession of our Mother, have mercy on the sick, the tempted, sinners – on all

who are in need.

Mary, Immaculate Virgin, our Mother, Patroness of our land, we praise you and

honor you and give ourselves to you. Protect us from every harm. Pray for us,

that acting always according to your will and the will of your divine Son, we

may live and die pleasing to God. Amen.

MARY GARDEN GUILD

Thank you to the MARY GARDEN GUILD members for

their dedication to Our Lady and their work in Mary's

Garden & the Rosary Garden all summer! The season has

come to a close but there is still beauty in the gardens! The

Joseph's Coat (coleus) is vibrant and waiting for your visit!

As the real flowers fade, Our Lady will receive sculptural

"winter flowers" of ROSES and LILIES. Watch the bulletin

for details! The Rose symbolizes Mary herself (she is

known as "The Mystical Rose," see Litany of Loreto) and

is described in Dante's “Paradiso”, "Here are the lilies

whose perfume guides you in the right ways." Roses and

lilies were said to have filled Mary's empty tomb when it

was opened by the Apostles. Please consider joining us

next spring as we continue our ministry, "Look to the

Garden, think of Mary." Planting and cultivation of a

Mary's Garden fosters devotion to Mary that always leads

to Christ.

VOCATION AWARENESS WEEK Vocation Awareness Week begins today! During this

week, let us be aware of our need to answer God's call in

our lives. That call began at Baptism, and continues as we

live out the vocation to the married life, the single life, the

consecrated life, and the ordained life. In a special way, let

us pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life in

our families. Our children and our grandchildren need to

know that we will encourage and support them if God calls

them in this way. During this week, there will be a table in

the BWC entrance with information about vocations, along

with some prayers for vocations. Please stop and pick up

some materials. For more information, you can check

out www.gbvocations.org or www.usccb.org.

Vocation Prayer

Gracious God, you have blessed me with many gifts and

talents. Grant me the wisdom to know how best to use them

for the glory of your name. Jesus calls, "Come follow me." I

want to follow you and be faithful to my call. Help me to

see in myself what you see, and give me the courage to

follow wherever you may lead. Bless the Church with

generous hearts, eager to serve your people and to spread

your Word. Amen!

BISHOP RICKEN’S

MONTHLY PRAYER INTENTION

For all who minister to those experiencing grief and loss,

especially within families, that they may be strengthened

in sharing the hope of Risen Christ with others.

That all may work to spread peace and reconciliation,

especially in the wake of violence and hatred. POPE FRANCIS’

MONTHLY PRAYER INTENTIONS

Evangelization Intention: That within parishes, priests and

lay people may collaborate in service to the community

without giving in to the temptation of discouragement.

Universal Intention: That the countries which take in a

great number of displaced persons and refugees may find

support for their efforts which show solidarity.

PRAYER CORNER Saint Gertrude Prayer

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of

Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said

throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in

purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the

universal church, those in my own home, and within my

family. Amen.

November is the month the Church dedicates to the Holy

Souls in Purgatory. Saint Gertrude's prayer, dating back to

the 13th century, is a traditional prayer that should be in

every Catholic's arsenal of memorized prayers. According

to tradition, Our Lord promised Saint Gertrude that every

time this prayer is said devoutly 1,000 souls would be

released from purgatory. Challenge yourself this month to

recite Saint Gertrude's prayer frequently, committing it to

memory if it isn't one you already know!

“FULLY ALIVE”

ADULT FAITH FORMATION Fully Alive monthly Adult Faith Formation is scheduled for

November 17th from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm in the

Mazzuchelli Hall at St John the Evangelist. The monthly

presentation will continue the Symbolon series.

November 17th – Preparing for Advent

“Divine Revelation

God Seeking Us & the Compass for Our Lives”

*Why God’s revelation is essential not just for knowing

information about Him, but for our happiness and for our

relationship with Him

*How we can know with confidence today what God

revealed to us 2000 years. ago in Jesus Christ.

*Why the Bible alone isn’t sufficient to know God

*Why we need the Church

Each presentation includes prayer, two short videos a

presentation on the subject with discussion concluding with

a personal life application. Please join our parish

community on this night. Look forward to seeing you!

Barbara Conder, Adult Faith Formation Coordinator

What does Symbolon Mean? If we are going on a journey, we want to make sure we are

going in the right direction. In our walk with God, how do

we know that we are following what Jesus and his apostles

really taught? The way the early Christians did this was by

developing a short statement of faith called the Creed,

which summed up core Christian beliefs that had been

passed on to them. This creed served as a sign of unity

between believers, connecting them with the beliefs of the

early Church. The Greek word symbolon often referred to a

clay seal that was broken in half and shared between two

people. When the two pieces were drawn together and

matched up perfectly, it confirmed the unity of beliefs

between the two people.
